Just a caution if you want your engine to live..... abrasives do very bad things to bearings. As you rebuild this engine using a dingleberry hone and scotchbrite pads, keep in mind that if any of the abrasives from these products is not removed from the block you run the risk of them becoming lodged in the bearings then literally machining the journals on the crank. I used to work as a quality engineer analyzing failed motors at Mercury Marine. The plant that made our longblocks had a habit of trying to rework nicks on cranks by polishing them with scotchbrite. Occasionally they didn't get all of the dust/debris from those rework operations cleaned off. The results were catastrophic. My suggestion - make sure you completely disassemble the block and wash everything. Flood the oil passages with solvent to rinse it all out. Don't just blow it out with air. Just because you don't see the abrasive debris doesn't mean it's not there.

You are so right Brian Keenan. Along with that thought using DW 40 as a lubricant can cause some of the abrasives to stick even deeper into the bores. This can cause an early break down of the rings. Especially when driven hard. P.S. To everyone out there please read the label on the can. WD stands for water dispersant "NOT LUBRICATING OR PENETRATING OIL". Love the show

If you have gone as far as tearing down and honing your own engine, please take the time to get the proper tools/lubricants. It's going to pay off in the long run.

@@matthewsmith646 Ah every beverage and food can has lacquer in it to stop what's inside eating the aluminum from the inside out. Even cans holding water. Also stops the oils and.residual chemicals in the metal from leeching into your drink making you sick. But if it was not there the can would not make it to a consumer as it would be filled stacked in a pallet then start leaking. Which would then flow into the tops and bottoms of other cans which then in turn eat their way in from the outside. Before you know it a stack of 40000 cans is fucked. And it does not take long so these things don't make it to market :)

May I suggest getting some plexiglass to put over the wire mesh on the shelves. You can set a lot more stuff on them that way, it also helps prevent the metal from scratching aluminum parts that are set on it. You can still see through it to see into the shelf below to find stuff. Just drill a couple holes on the ends and a couple of zip ties will secure it just fine.

Way back and far away I worked for a few years in an engine rebuild shop. Every engine that came in was completely disassembled and run through a hot caustic soda cleaner. This included everything which were later rinsed down. Aluminum parts, of course, got a different cleaning solution. If any abrasives were used the part or parts were bathed again, paying particular attention to oil ports.

You guys brought up a point that I wanted to mention a while ago. I know the smooth shiny floor is great to look at and clean but damn boys, it's slippery. I had the exact same floor in my wood shop and when I was pushing a 4 x 8 sheet of plywood through the table saw, I actually slipped backwards and the sheet stayed in place. What I did was sand the floor with 120 sandpaper to scuff it up and take the sheen off. Since you guys have so much floor, you could rent a floor polisher and get some 120 pads. Believe me, you'll love it after you're done.

I like to have my shop door open in the summer to get some fresh air and cool down but some people take it as an invitation to invite themselves over and chat--it's annoying enough when it's a couple of neighbors or a friend driving by but having random people you've never met stalking you just gets creepy. I hope they don't end up having to move shops and take a more secretive approach to their video production because of weirdos.

Cletus, you joked about setting the block out in the rain to rust a little. The father of one of the best mechanics I ever met sometimes didn’t hone at all. If the piston to cylinder wall clearance was close to the limit, he would wash the bores with hot soapy water, rinse with clean water, and let the block sit in South Florida humidity until a light coat of rust formed on the walls. He would then use some wet or dry sandpaper to remove the surface rust. I’m told he never had rings fail to seat. That said, I think I might have invested in a set of forged and properly fitted pistons for the build...

You really should have a flammables cabinet and waste bin. Steel so they give you plenty of time to use the fire extinguisher. And never mount the fire extinguisher next to them. Put them 20' away so you can actually use them. Nothing worse than realizing your extinguisher is too hot to grab as your skin melts.

Hey guys, love your channel, honestly i wish I could be engine tearing sunnovagun like yall. anyway I just wanted to say, wear some heavy nitrile gloves when you use acetone man! My hands are messed up from that stuff, working with it as a kid repairing surfboards with polyurethane resins and thinning solvents. I get rashes if a drop of that stuff gets on me, and now i cant even use dawn dish soap because of it. my hands feel like needles sticking in them after working on my starter for three hours trying to get my car to start, washing the engine greese off with dawn detergent now my hands been red for two days.. acetone is some nasty nasty stuff man, ive seen people hospitalized for lung scarring caused by working with acetone too long. No joke man. ANyway, I wouldnt spend the time writing this if I didn;t care bout yall, so keep poppin bottles and stompin throttles! hell yeah

I drink a third of an extra-strength 5-hour every (work day) morning at 7:00, a third at 9:30, and the last third at noon. Keeps me alert, not jittery, all day til around 5:00. They work FAR better for me than does any other energy drink, including plain ol' coffee/tea. Everyone's different, though.

It's a work shop thing. The outsiders are, like viewers on race day...... Too poor, to buy a race team, but wants in on the action.... Being on the "inside", of them yellow plastic chains, strung between the roller door pillars, is like being in the Champaign VIP room. The purple Circle????. The special Guest, the invited. Everyone wants in. Feel privileged that you're in the room. Not in the sun. Customers are the worst. When they look over your shoulder. As you work on their car, that they broke, mistreated, or want stuff done. Feels' awkward as they ask 'What are you doing now?" followed by 'What you doing that for?' and "Is that, gonna be right? like that..." And they walk to places, they should not go. Pick up things that they should not be touching. And talk shit about what, they know nothing about.

Wd40 is not a great lubricant, its just usefull for displacing moisture. Use ATF as a lubricant for honing the cylinder then coat in wd40 to prevent surface rust

MSengineering David you misunderstood my comment. I know that the honing was done incorrectly and with improper lubricant, however that is the spirit of this build. They literally found the crappiest engine that they could that will still run. The point is not to make this a good clean build

Guys --- Really don't know the fire codes where you're at.. .. .. But here, if the Fire Dept. came by and did an inspection and found all those flammables in a plastic cabinet, it could get expensive.... Look around for paint/flammables locker to stick that stuff in just to be safe-r....

Totally get what your saying about shop visits, I was crew chief for a popular short track driver. Some how fans found the shop, not always bad but could slow you down for sure. Also good job on organization of the shop. If you don't have a spot already you might want to add a charging station for your tool batteries. Have a good one I enjoy you guys much.
