I know what you mean when you say “what the house is asking for”. I lived in my home for several years before I knew what it was telling me. Now it’s a cozy cottage, so is my garden. 😊

hundred percent! Once my girls and boys (Monty and Jeffery) are a bit older and can eat without making a complete mess I will definitely be getting a rug. It just makes the space look so much better!

The room looks so much better without that HOME sign. As to the pictures, you say that you prefer the mix of white frames and wood frames, but I think all wood frames would be more compatible. Also, I would replace the metal drapery rod with a white one. And as to the yucky ceiling light in your kitchen: there is no natural light in the kitchen, but installing a skylight would solve the problem. Small downlights in the ceiling on either side of the skylight would provide evening illumination.

This looks so amazing!🌿 so glad you chose to lose the giant letters as they were too big. Maybe consider a linen or hemp colored table cloth for on the white table...would soften and warm up the room...you did a great job!🌿

I love it!! Your friends pottery is beautiful! My grandpa was a ceramics professor and he taught me how to throw pots. I would not consider myself talented with pottery but I can recognize talent when I see it! She should make some flowerpots and I bet they would sell very easily!

I’ve lived in my home for 25 years. Our four boys are grown and my baby is in his first year of college. I feel like I can finally do a complete makeover indoors (within reason). Now I can decorate with what makes me happy in this new stage of our lives. My hubby says he likes what I like so he’s basically the muscle and handy man. 👍🏼 reinventing our space to suite us is a breath of fresh air. Empty nesting sounds pretty good to me thus far.

for the picture hook holes in your wall try using white toothpaste. Small amount on your finger will fill the hole and excess can be sponged away. Good luck

Love the table you brought in. It's a small detail but you might consider replacing the dark shelf supports with clear ones, less distracting..

I know! It's so much bigger than I thought. I've researched the fishtail palm and you can size control it pretty easily so that is what I'll be doing!

Love the changes. In the meantime-- while you wait for a kitchen remodel, think about carefully taking down that cabinet over the peninsula. I think removing the cabinet will make the area seem larger and allow for less confined feeling. Who can really reach those anyway. Maybe you can re.use the storage elseware? Just a thought. Rethinking the dining area was , as was allowing the house to "speak" to you.... Love that little bowl...

Suggest you move world market table more to the right, closer to the book cabinets so it is more centered on the wall.

I totally understand what you’re saying about understanding what your house needs. I’ve always liked decorating and styling, and have had friends and family suggest I take it up as a career. However my styling comes from living in the home and seeing where the light falls and the mood of the room, the way the garden is reflected in the house, how the flow of traffic affects furniture placement and inspiration I get from maybe a rug I’ve seen that suddenly creates a whole vista in my mind. I prefer to know the space intimately before spending money, then I slowly put it all together as budget permits.

Nice progress Janey! I would suggest that you think about fabric or wallpaper backing (grasscloth??) For the shelves in the dining room. I think that will give you a pop of color or pattern. I agree with the person who suggested wrapping the light fixture in jute. Maybe parts if it if not the entire fixture

LOVE! I just learned how to hang a picture 😂. Love how the grow light is attractive and adds to ambient light in the dining room. A cute squat little table lamp with a shade and warm bulb on a timer on the opposite side of the console would be lovely!

For your kitchen you can have the cabinets that are hanging above your sink taken down to open up the room. We did this, and it made all the difference in the world. Then you can replace them with some pendant lights over your sink maybe. You can make up for the storage in other places. We repurposed those cabinets in our laundry room. Also maybe replace your fluorescent light with canned lights. And cut down the cabinet where the breakfast bar is so that it's not multi-level. You'll have so much more surface area to work with. I love the built in bookshelf!

I get it about listening to the house....nice changes, warmer, more natural. You could also try to take out a shelf in the bookcase to make it airier, maybe place a large ceramic plate in your new colors upright in the back of one of the shelves or paint the back of your bookcase. I hope one day when you are up to 500 subscribers you could perhaps take up the ceiling to the rafters , painted white...😉..give upward space for your new plant to grow. Anyway , your makeover of the dining room is a success . That wood table is perfect with your chairs and dining table ...a real California casual style !👏👏👏

I love your choices! I think you have a blank slate. The outside is very organic, rustic. I wouldn’t do anything “farmhouse” bc that’s been so overdone. Lots of green and neutrals with a pop of color here or there would be perfect! Can’t wait to watch you transform!! 🥰🥰 Ann Marie in Alabama 😊😊

Good morning. The change you did has brighten up and everything seems to fit. All I have to say is that palm is huge. Our last three homes are ranch style, living in the Southwest. I incorporate a lot of terracotta planters. I don’t follow trends but the houses’ architecture and our own style guide our decorating choices.
