The mince pie is like a cousin of the "tourtière" here in Canada. It's a pie filled with ground meats and seasonings. Corned beef and mash is popular in Newfoundland, adopted from the Irish I believe.

That's a very upmarket pie & mash shop in Carnaby Street. Not at all typical of a proper pie & mash shop where you get either liquor or gravy with your pie and mash. Mash is just your standard mash potato smeared on the outside of the plate with the pies in the middle and liquor around the outside. The kicker is the chilli vinegar on the table that you liberally sprinkle on the liquor to take it to a new level of tastiness. If you're in SW London I'd recommend Golden Pie at Clapham Junction for some great traditional pie & mash.

Pie&mash with liquor and only liquor is the only British traditional pie&mash and it needs lots of vinegar and pepper. Traditionally the pies were eel pies (before my day) this is the reason liquor is parsley sauce and not gravy! Pie&mash shops still sell eels stewed or jellied and all original pie&mash shops were tiled with saw dust on the floor like a wet fish shop. :)

London is probably the best example we have on the planet, of what a multi-cultural society could be and should be. Don’t get me wrong it’s not perfect but it’s a good experience non the less. Also cheesy mustard mash for the win baby. Best mash ever.

Sir Squegg It’s weird, you put that comment on here a year ago, and you haven’t had the whole “Londinistan!! Muliticultural failure!! Death zone!! Third world!! There’s not even any English there anymore!! Come up north because there’s not a single friendly person in London!!” brigade descend on you yet. And yet some videos on London that’s like 75% of the comments. I agree with you, London is incredible. I wonder why some videos attract the BNP gang and some don’t. Interesting.

@@Robhalifax No it was a question tacitly about algorithms I suppose - some videos about London attract the frothing at the mouth gang who’ve never been there, but are furious about it because it is, and always has been a melting pot. And some videos don’t. Why do you ask?

lol poor Michael, just watching you both tucking into his dish made me laugh - I know you guys do the meal thing to enlighten us all and that its part of your theme for the vlogs, but the look on his face!! Kyde where have you been? Lamb dishes without Mint Sauce (even as a side dish) is absolute sacrilege here in the UK - I once worked in a Hospital were staff neglected to put out the Mint Sauce to accompany the Lamb Roast and when a patient complained the staff got reprimanded! (true story). p.s. its all about the gravy, or as the French say 'the rouge'

JustBanter Tradition has it that the serving of mint with lamb was brought back from the Crusades by Knight Templars who had experienced it when eating amongst Arabs.
@justbanter8727
@justbanter8727 6 жыл бұрын
One theory of the development of the lamb/mint association suggests that it is a legacy of the roast lamb and bitter herbs eaten by the Israelites on the eve of their Exodus from Egypt. "Sweet and sour" sauces such as mint sauce were common throughout Medieval Europe but dried and fresh mint are also part of several dishes of Tunisian Cuisine; It has an interesting history for sure.

FYI, pie and mash shops across London are about traditional pie mash and liquor, I feel you missed out because you didn't have a traditional pie and plain mash to which you then add pepper and vinegar, it's what Londoners have grown up on. I like the idea of that pie shop though with its varying styles of sausages pies and mash.

pie and mash is what Londoners have. in the north of England it's pie, chips and gravy. when I went to London, being from the North west of England I asked for pie chips and gravy and the guy gave me a look of "are you mad?". if a Londoner went to Manchester I think they would get the same look if they asked for pie and mash.

@Kepsux Smithfield sausages have a lot of rosemary, nutmeg and sage in them which would explain the alchoholicy taste. It's sometimes added as extracts with an alchohol tincture of whiskey or rum, so as not to add vegetation in there yet have the herbs and spices in the product. I think. This is my deduction.

Sorry, that’s not real pie n’ mash. Pie & mash comes from shoos like Goddards, Manzies & Cookes. They just do normal mash and pie shop pies, which are basic minced beef with a very individual pastry, short crust bottom and flaky top. The other things they sell are jellied eels and a sauce you have over your pie called “Liquor” which is made from Eel stock and Parsley and is BRIGHT GREEN!
