Reviewing a VERY EXPENSIVE ITALIAN RESTAURANT!

I am of Italian descent, and I nearly wept as you dined. My Grandmother was a gifted cook, indeed a chef for wealthy Parisian family before WWII when she had to leave. Every dish was simply presented of the very best ingredients, exquisitely done with a deft hand. She did everything but desserts. We had fruit in season, ice cream in winter. Oh, but you brought back a flood of memories. Mille Grazia.

Great ingredients don’t need a place to hide. From the little touches of oil, basil and quality bread, to the pork belly and then the past every element of that meal stood out as first class. Thanks Gary, your descriptive review made my mouth water 👏

For me, Gary missed a big detail, I have never seen such a poor plating as a plate of sliced, fatty pork, nothing else whatsoever on the plate and especially at those prices. With gourmet cooking the way a dish is served is a huge part of the affair and it seems that in this case the chef must have taken twenty seconds to slice up some meat and throw it on a plate, just my opinion. A lot of class, all third.

My wife of 49yrs is Italian and she is the best thing that as happened to me, Italian cooking is the best in my opinion, in the early 80s my wife took to me italy to visit her auntie's and uncles about an hour away from Naples in Campania,there had been an earthquake about 6 months previous and her auntie's house although just about safe to live in was in a right state with no running water gas or electricity and all cooking was done on a wood fired stove so we ate by candle light, that meal of ragout with rigatoni pasta was the tastiest meal ive ever had in my life they were such nice people and never moaned about the situation they were just happy to be alive, thats why i not only love my wife but also the Italian people, they keep food simple, even in this day and age i can give my missus a fiver and she would make a meal for the four of us, it would be simple but delicious and tasty, great video as normal Gary, its a 10 from me. Cheers mate..( by the way after a while they were rehoused in a modern flat)

Lovely story Harold. True love and homemade gourmet cooking. Can’t beat that. I moved to France in 2008. Met a lovely French girl. But she loves British culture. So I explained the concept of a proper steak and ale pie. Or a proper roast. She LOVES all that. I love French cheese, bread and red wine. Sometimes called the Holy Trinity 😊. But her mum does a lovely roast chicken with roast chestnuts and a sauce (not really a gravy) made with échalotes. The spuds are local but she boils them. I suggested roasting the spuds in the sauce! Ooh! You don’t tell the matriarch how to knock up a roast chicken! That was me out on my place 😊

I've seen couples on their wedding day with less enthusiasm and satisfaction than you're showing in this video. It's so good to see someone happy. Next time have the pasta first then the meat course and salad or vegetable second and see how that goes for you.

Considering the location and the quality of the food, I wouldn't consider this meal to be expensive for a treat. Not one for everyday lunch, but for a celebration or to impress someone important, probably well worth it.

Another great review. I'm lucky enough to have Italian friends who live just outside Rome. The whole family lives in a 4 storey house with an apartment for each family on each floor. In the basement is the huge kitchen where Nona Alvira (sadly no longer with us) used to rule the roost. This restaurant reminded me of her cooking. One or two simple ingredients, but the best and well done. My husband and I drove to Rome via a lot of the Spanish regions. We were thinking of a gift to buy for the family. What's the best gift for Italians? Food, of course! So we bought regional foods and wines from every region we drove through, and made a hamper. Alvera's eyes were so wide when we gave the hamper to her. And do you know, something of everything we had bought was incorporated into every meal we had with them for our stay. It's the Italian way 😁❤

I have to say, it confuses me how people romanticise about the simplicity of Italian ingredients but criticise classic English dishes for being too simple or not having a good enough variety of seasonings. It reminded me of eating Italian home cooked food when I was in my teens, My best friend from school was Italian and his Granny used to do all the cooking. I was lucky enough to be invited round for lunch or dinner a few times and the food was to die for. I have eaten in quite a few Italian restaurants over the years but none ever matched her freshly sourced and made Italian food.

Ooooh some Italiano. Beautiful and authentic. Oh wow I just love this. I love your sense of humour ,too funny 🤣 I love Italian cuisine. It doesn't love me but oh well . The pork looked juicy before you even started. Italians love to fatten you not just feed you . That pasta wow. I can taste it . Rigatoni as you know has grooves/lines on the pasta so that the sauce etc clings to it making it even more delicious. This is a top notch review. Very classy indeed . Thank you for sharing sweet. One of the (many) strengths of Gary's channel is that he reviews every type of restaurant, cafe, fast food outlet, etc, on their own merit. He was as fair to Gregg's as he was to Osteria Romana. You can only reasonably compare high-end with high-end, mid-range with mid-range and budget with budget.

well Gary i don't want to make you jaleous but i was a trucker who rode every week to Italy. There we unloaded en reloaded and did some deliveries befrore we drove back home. We always went to a little restaurant near parma where 'la mama' cooked and her husband served . Everything was fresh and the bread she baked herself. They even made their own Limoncello. The man himself had a very strange hobby, he went from farm to farm around Parma in search of the best ham he could buy and when he found a ham to his satisfaction he was so proud that he walked in his restaurant carrying the ham like a baby. After everybody praised him enouch he took his knife a made slices that were so thin you could see throu them. but omg what a taste! So now for the part to make you jaleous lol. we had all the Lambrusco or prosecco we wanted,as much bread as we wanted, frsh grated parmacheese,3 dishes and after the souper all the limoncello we could drink for 10 pound hahahahahahaha well that was an eleven out of ten ;)

@@GaryEats well when you drive around with a 24 meter long truck loaded with cars in the innercity of london,paris milan or brussels you can hardly speak in terms of travelling hahahahaha i had once the privelege to deliver cars on a british mail site in the inner city of london where i only could get on the terrain driving in a certain way and i can asure you when they are talking about 'cold sweat' i fully understand the meaning of those words :) best regards and i wish you a very big and healthy appetite

My grandfather is Italian but my grandmother is English. I was born in England, Kent in 1985 and have always been brought up on Italian food. I've been to Italy many many times and love it there. Some Italian restaurants in England are good but to get the best experience you need to visit Italy. I love my British food though but I recommend everyone try Italian food. It's beautiful, delicious and up there with the best cuisines in the world.

Gary, another great review, it looked amazing. It seemed to have nailed the whole ethos of Italian food, simple, high quality ingredients cooked with love and passion. When it is done as well as that Italian food is in my view the best in the world. I agree it wasn’t cheap but it looked good value to me considering the quality, many places charge more for much less.

Ox tail is one of my most favourite meats. It’s unique flavour is just devine. Mum used to make a delicious 😋 stew and I miss it very much. The portion sizes are super indulgent too x

That would have been a meal I would have chosen. Belly pork is my favourite meat, it’s sweet, tender and flavoursome. Oxtail in red wine is stunning and being Italian I’m sure there’d be wine in. Tiramisu is one of my favourite desserts. My mouth was watering. It’s expensive yes, but a once in a while treat for special occasions, it’s a definite xx
