"Picture it, 1964, Brooklyn." Ex-fishmonger here! 👋 Randy, we are simpatico because I was just going to watch a Fanny Craddock Christmas vid, but I said to myself, "I need a DPT fix." Wishing you the happiest of birthdays! xoxo 😘😘🎊🎉✴️ I spy two new pups. 🐕 🐕 They are two of the luckiest pups in the world to have Randy. 🤗

LOL My younger sister LOVED Brandy Alexanders in about 1982. We shared a room when I was home from college, and I spent many a night listening to her puking in a bucket all night long! Ha, Ha.... can't believe you brought up that memory.

I was also born in 1963!. I don't like chocolate but do love cherry. I used to ask for the Betty Crocker cherry chip cake with cherry frosting for my birthday. My mom thought it was horrendous and when I turned 13 she finally refused to make it again, LOL. For the last 46 years my birthday cake of choice is a special order Carvel ice cream cake that has no chocolate ice cream or chocolate crunchies. The Passing Squall could be a take on a Dark N Stormy swapping the rum for a smooth bourbon!

I remember for my 8th grade graduation, my Dad & Stepmom took me to the Mark Twain Diner in Jackson Heights (Queens) and ordered me a Brandy Alexander. It did taste like a dessert but I felt so grown up...LOL

Maybe Fanny meant grape tomatoes, a cream cheesy (mascarpone?) pesto, dipped in crushed pine nuts! I could see that being tasty! Surely they just left off some words! Happy Birthday!!

I'm a native Rhode Islander, live in Newport - and it is beautiful here. I don't agree that we are an extension of Massachusetts, because we are quite different culturally actually, however as we are such a small state, the northern communities do blend in with Mass and the southern (such as Newport) with Connecticut. We had clams casino frequently, and it was so good to see it again as I haven't made it in years - ours was just like yours, only my mom added crisp bacon - thanks for doing this - I was born in 64 and share memories.

A "Passing Squall" should be on of those cocktails that "performs" when served and drunk ( like a Slippery Nipple or Lights in the Harbor). I suggest either a layering of Creme de Menthe, Blue Cacao, and gin or vodka and maybe a chocolate liqeur (for the dark sky); or a drink that precipates (dances as it settles in an up martini glass) after being shaken with finely crushed ice using coconut liquer (snow) -- line rim with really fine ground fresh cocount , vodka and maybe a drop of blue cacao added at end to create a sky-blue swirling in the glass. Garnish with a sprig of champagne white grapes or lime.

What an epic episode! When that Chicken á la King was done, all I could think of was making individual servings with a puff pastry topping! The Passing Squall : a good bourbon and a drizzle of that syrup from the jar of Amarena Cherries.

Happy Birthday, Randy! I am also a 1963 baby -- but we didn't have any of that. It was hash mash and government rations, Elios pizza and my mom's lazy meatballs in greasy pan gravy. Dad made a pot roast once a month if we were lucky. Cherries also my favorite.

I love wild rice. My mom introduced me to it in the mid-60s and she explained to me that wild rice was in fact, not a rice, but actually a grass that’s harvested in Minnesota. In any case, my developing palate thought that the taste of this nutty and toasty rice was absolutely wonderful probably because my mother added a generous tablespoon of pure butter when the rice was done, but I prefer it without adding white rice, which I always thought was added, because it was cheaper than cooking, wild rice by itself. I absolutely love your videos and i share them with friends! Thank you so much for your channel.

Thank you for your great shows. I'm addicted! When I cook wild rice I start by soaking it in very hot water, changing the water about three times, and then cooking it as white rice using long-grain white rice. I finish the dish with a knob of butter. The flavour of the wild rice infuses into the white rice.

Happy BELATED birthday randy !! Love your channel and all you do for us home cook foodies. Re. The Passing Squall: after reading up on the painting of the same name, I’d suggest some rendition of a dark and stormy (dark and stormy seas such as the passing squall in the painting), and/or maybe spin it with a grapefruit citrus garnish vs lime..but that’s more bc GF is salty like the sea. I might be too literal here but 🤷🏻‍♀️

Passing Squall: should be a drink containing Violet liqueur. Just a touch... to give it the right color. There is a drink I ordered from a downtown Baton Rouge bar years ago which I loved called "Kite in a Hurricane". It did have the Violet liqueur as an ingredient. Might want to check out Pat O'Brien's (NOLA) famous "Hurricane".

I love old fashioned cake recipes. I actually adapted a chocolate cake recipe, like the recipe you're using here, by substituting carob powder for the cocoa and a cup of hot espresso for the water. My husband is allergic to chocolate, but he's always loved the look and scent of German chocolate cake. So, I make a German Carob cake for him. The cake comes out very moist and tender and looking a bit like devil's food cake. I must confess, while it certainly doesn't taste exactly like chocolate, the caramel notes and slight bitterness of the coffee do come very close. Add the traditional coconut pecan frosting, and you have a happy, satisfied boy. As you said in a previous episode, feeding and nourishing a loved one is a beautiful thing.
