Following on from removing the gearbox it’s now time to de what is wrong with it. It may be of interest to get a better understanding of how it works so I will also give a brief introduction to the operation of the FIAT system.

Fascinating watching the gearbox coming back together. I remember having a Moto Morini 500 sport in bits to renew a big end bearing. After the gearbox and engine went back together I was left with a washer in the otherwise empty box of parts. I had to strip it all down again to find out where it was meant to go. Eventually it all went back together and ran on the third kick. Patience is a virtue.

Thank you. I have found that an IPhone is a very useful tool for any workshop and many other environments for recording and documenting your work. Then using it for reference when reassembly. I have also seen some people using special racks for laying out parts during assembly. The good news about your story is that you worked out where the problem was and addressed it ! As you said Patience is a virtue. You can always find more time to get something right but if you don’t it might just end up broken forever !

Generally, automotive folks specialise in one, maybe two, things. Mark, you are doing incredible, hand-made, body work one week, then the next you have a gearbox in peices. My goodness mate... All the Very Best to you, and all, in 2024! Cheers!!!

I trained as a mechanic then taught myself to weld and repair bodywork. I then worked with a friend to learn coach building. Self taught with lathe and the mill , lots more to learn there ! But it gives me a better understanding of the whole vehicle. Things do take a long time as I work on my own but I’m happy in my work so that’s a good thing. Happy New Year !

Mark, thank you for taking the time to document this with your video. I, too, am in the midst of a Fiat Dino 2000 gearbox rebuild on my bench. I took many still photos but your video is so much better. If I may offer some advice before you seal everything up: I'd encourage you to pop out the layshaft, and and re-set the shift forks. Tightening of the shift forks onto the selector rods should only be done once the detents are in place to hold the shift rods in true neutral. Then the shift forks can be set, ensuring that the correspondent synchro sleeves are centered and will not interfere with the nearby synchro rings. This also ensures that the shifter travel is equal in both directions over the hub in each shift gate. I've corrected several previously rebuilt gearboxes from Alfa Romeo cars (many similarities to this Fiat unit in fact) that had extreme local wear due to the synchro slider dragging against the synchro ring due to mis-set shift forks. It does not take long to wear through that moly coating. Though the detents were not yet placed, if you stop at 35:02, you can see visible bias of the shift fork toward the 2nd gear, and to a lesser extent 4th gear, synchro ring. The width between synchro rings once assembled on the shaft in this Fiat 'box are greater and therefore more forgiving than the Alfa 'boxes so you might be very close already, but I suggest taking a quick look to make sure things are centered. Thank you. I wouldn’t worry too much about the position of the shift forks in the video as the main shaft was not tight in the video so not actually sitting in its running position for want of a better description. But I take on board your opinion and agree that it should be rechecked so will definitely have a look. Thank you for your input and please do comment on anything as it is useful for all . A big part of this channel is to share information and encourage interest in the skills required to maintain these lovely old cars .
