And then she had enough of the German Schlager totalitarianism and did what she could do best. Jazz, Swing, Samba. I remember a TV show way, way back in the mid or late 1970's where she appeared after a longer absence from Germany. She performed with a very well-reputated swing orchestra (unfortunately I forgot the name) - and her art made my parents an me speechless. Never ever had anyone in this then so narrow-minded country expected anything like that from her who once had been everybody's darling (in the 1950's/60's). She even had her own show on German TV in the early 1960's, called "Bonjour Catrin".

Her amazing positive impact reminded us that we should let go of our prejudices against the German people and realize that there is no future based on hatred! Nowadays the Dutch and German people are closer than they have ever been!! I see with big worry that in the English speaking world is infected by the woke ideas of white racism and that the message of Martin Luther King to judge each other based on character rather than group identity is being destroyed and replaced by a new racist hatred. I am so glad that we were not hit by the same virus!

That's the power of Dean's insistance on not rehearsing too much. Rehearsing kills spontenaity, and Dean recognized that spontenaity, including mistakes, gave life to an act.

Simply wonderful! That was the beauty of Dean Martin's show (maybe even the beauty of Dean Martin): his show was pure entertainment. The finest comedians, singers, actors and dancers joined him every week, and they put on a show that was as good as anything you'd pay money for. And everyone in the family could watch...
