Something to note is that they didn't call it "carcharodontasaurus" they called them "carcharodontasaurs" as in just the specific family of dinosaur. While still inaccurate, its a little better. I loved this documentary, and this video is really good!

Some people have said they were based off of the now identified Megaraptoran Aerosteon but I have my doubts about this. Unless there is evidence for it, that isn't just Aerosteon lived at the same time as Saltasaurus, I don't believe that.

A few things of note: -The presence of Prenocephale in _White-Tip's Journey_ is anachronistic; while everything else in the episode is based on the Djadochta Formation, Prenocephale is known from the younger (and wetter) Nemegt. -I'm surprised you only mentioned the anachronism of the show's depiction of Quetzalcoatlus and not how it's portrayed as pretty much a swan-necked Pteranodon. -While not the most aesthetically pleasing and far from perfect, the saltasaur is more accurate/better researched than most depictions. While the show's model probably went _a little_ far, Saltasaurus actually did have a pretty broad ribcage. Meanwhile the scutes *do* appear to be present, they're just not oversized or emphasized as in many depictions. (the largest scutes known from Saltasaurus were about 12cm/5in) -Much like the saltasaur, the rhabdodont model is also more accurate than you'd think. The model appears to have been based off the skeleton of *Zalmoxes ,* a dinosaur that was considered a species of Rhabdodon when _Dinosaur Planet_ was in production and almost certainly the identity of the "dwarf iguanodon". (Zalmoxes actually got named earlier the same year the program aired; I'm guessing they already finished recording Christian Slater's narration at that point) For Zalmoxes, the shape and proportions look correct if a bit shrink-wrapped; the main inaccuracy is that they're portrayed as mainly quadrupeds when they appear to have been purely bipedal.

Yeah! Quetzalcoatlus was a gigantic Marabou stork(of course, millions of years before the real Marabou stork) and Velociraptor should be coexisting with Goyocephale.

Great review, I loved this documentary growing up and im glad its still great documentary. Although, I did notice few problems with your review 4:41 - we actually do have fossils of Daspletosaurus that show some form some kind of pack behavior. It was also showed in Planet Dinosaur about discovery, plus paleonologists like Dr Holtz heavily believe that tyrannosaurs behaved in some form of legitmate pack hunting. So, tyrannosaurs hunting in packs is practically widely accepted in scientific community at this point. 5:45 - I believe the "Carcharodontosaurus" was suppose to be Giganotosaurus originally. 10:10 - I think you got yourself confused on "mainland iguanodon" being Rhabdon. That creature was totally separate iguanodontian. Although, im not sure what genus it is referring too. 6:33 - I honestly dont consider that a flaw or objective problem with the series. Honestly, Dinosaur Planet gets B+ or A- imo. Probably the best dinosaur documentary made by Discovery channel.

@Karthik Devamanohar As Of right now, evidences on larger tyrannosaurs hunting in packs depends on species. There’s some evidences suggesting Tyrannosaurus Hunted in packs or pair, it’s still speculative for now. Zhuchengtyrannus is based on one specimen so far, so we don’t know a lot it regardless.

Not really a correction, however one thing I want to point out, is that Dinosaur Planet likes to refer to the family or order, rather than the Genus or Species with the exceptions of named Dinos, or prominent rivals. So "Carcharodontosaurus" is actually a generic "Carcharodontosaur"

This doc is my childhood. In germany it aired every other month or so for a few years and I always begged my mom that i could stay up late and watch it. Weirdly they didnt really cut in the parts where the paleontologist explains everything but cut it up to maybe 30sec. snippets.

That was the thing with “Walking”, though: they specifically filmed in locations that had little or no grassy areas, like, at all, while “Planet”, it seemed, didn’t really care? Same thing with the 2013 movie: David Krentz designed all the animals in it, and yet multiple grassy fields throughout.

This was iconic for me as a kid I even had a dream I was just like alpha as a baby running through the forest hiding from the predators for survival pretty much just like the show. I rewatched this recently and I wanted more parts with Scott Sampson every time he was on I felt engaged didn't want to look away he was great. Good review! From what I know, the carcharodontosaurus in the show is actually a Giganotosaurus classified as a G. saharicus, why? The paleontologist that was hired was Greg Paul, he is very infamous for lumping genus dinosaurs, example: Velociraptor antirrophus, Tyrannosaurus torosus or more criminal: Monolophosaurus wucaii (no kidding, look princeton field guide 2010), so Im not suprised he lumped, infact the Carcharo head here looks more like a 90s-early 2000s giga skull.

As a Brazilian I grew up learning that there probavaly were Carcharadontosaurus here, because we found some teeth. Its not conclusive. But since South América and África were close, thats what most Brazilian paleontologists belive.

Well, for one thing, we know now that 1.) Quetzalcoatlus likely was more like a modern-day marabou stork than like a pelican (which was in “Little Das’s Hunt”), that it was a scavenger and sometimes predator that could walk comfortably on all fours than a sea-going creature that nested together in rookeries, and 2.) Saltasaurus being among the “last of the sauropods”, even though sauropods like Alamosaurus thrived right up to the K-T extinction event, but, yeah, considering the time it came out, it was pretty on point.

Troodontid teeth being undiagnostic is not the same thing as saying Troodon isn't a valid genus. This issue is still heavily debated, and has not been resolved. Even if the type specimen of Troodon should be assumed to have come from Stenonychosaurus and the two genera synonymized, then Troodon would take priority and Stenonychosaurus would be invalid. Beyond that, Troodon could still be given priority by the same function that allows us to still call it Tyrannosaurus.

One thing that makes the origin of T. rex more complicated is the discovery of Lythronax, Teratophoneus and Bistahieversor in the southwestern USA, all closer to T. rex than Daspletosaurus. Combine this with the oldest T. rex specimens (69 Ma) coming from Utah and Texas and there’s a good case for a North American origin.

To be fair, the narration only ever refers to them as "carcharodontosaurs" rather than to the _Carcharodontosaurus_ genus specifically. Like wise for the saltosaurs, which are probably meant to be _Neuquensaurus australis,_ which lived closer in time to the episode's setting and has occasionally been considered part of the same genus as _Saltasaurus._

This was actually the first time I ever saw anything dinosaurs related. I got the DVD when I was five and since that day I've been obsessed with prehistory. This was my first and favourite documentary as a child so the nostalgia is hitting hard right now. Even as a child tho when I saw Charcarodontosaurus in South America I was like "tf, am I missing something here?". I never got Pod's travel inconsistencies so thanks for the info. The velociraptor ep is soo good to this day considering when it came out. When I saw velociraptors with feathers and being smaller than in jp I was so happy guys. Does it hold up to today? Not really, but for the time this was a great step in the right direction. Did they take the direction we were hoping later tho?🤔

There's a noteworthy inaccuracy in the episode with Saltasaurs in it. They said that by the time of the episode, it had been millions of years since the last sauropod lived in North America which is false as Alamosaurus lived in North America in the Late Cretaceous right up until the KT meteor struck the Earth and caused the extinction of the Dinosaurs. Alamosaurus has been known to have existed since at least the 1980's when I was a kid and has been featured in a number of different dinosaur books and has been known by a lot of scientists so there's no excuse for the writers to make such a glaring error. It may be a minor detail for the script but it shows that the researchers were lazy in their research involving dinosaurs.

They were never referred to as "Carcharodontosaurus" in the episode, that was a name given to them on the webpage that was released along with it and who knows if the writer of that page had anything to do with making the show. Also Aerosteon was thought to be a Carcharodontosaur before Megaraptors became their own group. I think you're being a bit too harsh on the Hateg Island setting, seeing as how in 2003 we had hardly any of the material we have today from there. Other than that, good review.

What another great video, I've been watching videos from your channel when you had just over 200 subscribers and it's nice to see you hit 1k. Your videos are nice to watch and the most accurate thing you've said in this video is Logan Paul being a sucky fighter haha. Yeah, many confused "Carcharodontosaurs" with "Carcharodontosaurus". Maybe it would have been better for the documentary to describe them as "Carcharodontosaurids" instead.
