Thanks for addressing the misconception about DIO's Part 6 characterization. I think way too many fans have this flanderized image of DIO in their heads from memes, thinking DIO is nothing more than "Road Rolla" or "Muda Muda". Also, I always loved how, despite not being there for it, DIO's heaven plan strongly mirrors the story of William Zepelli. Zepelli too was made aware of his own tragic fate, which allowed him to come to terms with it and die without fear or regret, something DIO wants to force on everyone while ironically being unable to accept his own fate of being destined to lose.

I think another good foil to Dio would be Robert E.O. Speedwagon. It's easy to assume that the two of them grew up in similar circumstances and had to commit evil deeds as a form of survival. Dio surviving in poverty with an abusive father, and Speedwagon surviving in the dangerous Orge Street. The main difference is how the two reacted to Johnathon Joestar. While Dio resented Johnathon for the easy life he was given, Speedwagon admired Johnathon's righteousness to the point of assisting him throughout the entire part. The heroic actions of Johnathan and Willaim Zeppeli had an effect on the man. Even after becoming an oil baron and forming the Speedwagon Foundation, he took the time to look after Erina and even take Joesph as a sort of adopted son. Speedwagon was not capable of fighting with Hamon and had no children, but ironically he left more of a positive impact on the world than most characters in the series. His legacy that takes the form of the Speedwagon foundation made great advancments in the fields medicine and archeology. And of course the Speedwagon Foundation was crucial to the outcomes of the conflicts in Parts 3 and 6. It makes you think what great things a man like Dio could have been capable of if he had been willing to be humbled by Johnathan. Actions born of righteousness will always outlast superficial evil.

I absolutely love how Dio's speech to Polnareff about the peace of mind perfectly ties to his idea of Heaven in Part 6. It fits incredibly good. Dio believed that everyone do everything they do to achieve peace of mind, and that achieving peace of mind is the goal of humanity, and that's why for him knowing everything that will happen to you is the true "Heaven", because nothing could give you a bigger peace of mind. Of course the series proves him wrong because characters like Avdol did things like saving Polnareff and Iggy, this being and act not to achieve peace of mind, but an act out of love and justice, the main themes of the series. Without knowing their fates, characters like Avdol, Jotaro, or Jolyne, were able to sacrifice themselves out of love, something Dio could never do, precisely because he threw away his humanity

I would argue that selflessness does not negate attaining peace of mind here. Avdol, because he loved his friends, sacrificed himself to save them and therefor achieved his own definition of peace of mind by knowing he had saved his friends. It is merely that because DIO is a selfish prideful man that his definition of peace of mind is inherently tied to total control and domination, helpfully showcased by what Tarot his stand is linked to.

This is a much needed video. Dio holds so much of Arakis themes in the entire series, and really made me think while reading the story. He truly brings out the philosophical side of Arakis beliefs and that's so interesting. To this day the concept of gravity and fate has been my favorite thing Araki had created. It's so intriguing and really just kept me believing in it as the story of stone ocean kept going, as well as looking back at the rest of the original universe and how there events played out.

I actually think Kars in p2 serves a greater narrative purpose of highlighting the significance of Dio's return in p3. With Kars we're shown how a single man with enough blind ambition essentially caused the extinction of his own kind. This applied both to Kars as well as the other pillarmen who blindly followed him. We are then reintroduced to Dio with the foreknowledge of p1 that he has an incredible ambition to rule the world, he will do whatever it takes to reach this goal, and there are many who will blindly follow and serve him to aid in this goal. Without having any idea what he's actually planning, we know just out of principal that he can't be allowed to continue it, him winning would be the end of everything.

What you are talking about reminds me of a psychological/sociological phenomenon called "groupthink". It's when a group is driven with bllind self-confidence towards a goal while lacking any critical spirit and objectivity, leading for example into omission of the ethics and moral consequences of their ways to achieve this goal or their flaws, eventually resulting in failure of thé said group. This is namely (but not exclusively) caused by blind trust placed in a single leader (wich I think echoes whith what joseph is talking about in the panel at 14:23). I just exposed what I understood from the wikipedia page. If anyone with actual deeper knowledge of the subject could confirm or develop this, it would be greatly appreciated 🙏).

@@coloquintedetoux6899 What you described reminds me of 2 things: 1) Team Galactic from Pokémon 2) Nazi Germany Sounds ridiculous, I know, but aren't they more similar than you think? Both groups blindly followed a singular, charismatic, ambitious leader to the point they lacked any reasoning or awareness of what they're really doing and what the implications may be, only focusing on that vague but hopeful outcome of a "perfect world" said leaders preached about. I think that's what groupthink often manifests as, right?

To me, Kars represents the idea that a “perfect” human…cannot be human at all. In an effort to eliminate all of his weaknesses, Kars becomes a total scumbag, and once he’s overcome the earth and the sun he immediately abuses it. Humans MUST be grounded in their limitations. Only by rejecting their humanity can they attain greater power, but they are no longer human by that point. On a grander scale, this means that Kars tried to overcome the fate he was born with, his weakness to the sun, and was shot down from HIS heaven as a result.

Araki philosophy is really beautiful. It's sad that many fans can't see it, but all Jojo's are righteous even with their flaws and "bad traits"/sins. I think that's because we are locked on a mind of Good vs Evil, instead of what's Right vs what's Wrong.

This is why DIO is my favorite Jojo villain. Ultimately, he is purely evil, but his philosophical outlook on Fate and Gravity skyrocketed his character to a cult-like degree, and he's good-looking and charismatic? It's scarily realistic. I could see why he had so many followers and why Pucci ended up succeeding DIO in his Heaven plan. Pucci is my 2nd favorite because he builds upon this idea, and Valentine is third. Steel Ball Run is the overall best part of Jojo's , but Golden Wind and Stone Ocean are the best thematically in the original continuity imo

"There's never been a relationship as cultivated as ours". Forever my favorite line in the series. Jonathan and Dio are amazing foils. Both lost mothers, but how they're fathers brought them up shaped the men they would become, and while one would seek to stand above humanity and rule, becoming immortal in the process, the other would value human life and grow to protect it, despite being mortal and losing his life, his actions and will are carried on and inspire a bloodline of (if often unlikely lol) heroes for generations. Fits well to what Emporio and Giorno say to their respective villians before their inevitable beatdowns. Jonathan’s kindness saved Lisa Lisa who was able to teach Joseph. It always confused me how people thought that Dio in Part 6 was inconsistent with Dio from Part 1-3. Because... _no shit,_ of COURSE Dio will behave differently with a friend (Pucci) than he will against an enemy (Jotaro). You don't talk to your employer in the workspace the same way you talk to your pals at a bar, and Dio's interactions are just like that. He's quiet and philosophical with Polnareff and Pucci, because Dio wanted them to see the world from his perspective. And he's hammy and arrogant with Jonathan and Jotaro because they are enemies that Dio wanted to completely destroy. More people need to realize that the best characters have different sides to their personalities that they show to different people. Calling Dio inconsistent because he behaves differently with Pucci than he does with Jotaro is the same as calling Monkey D. Luffy inconsistent because he behaves differently with his crewmates than he does with Kaido. Those sorts of people don't understand the basic sense of how human beings work.

Right from the very beginning of our introduction to Dio in Part 1, we see him as a deeply intellectual and philosophical individual who's ambitions outweigh his contentment. Every evil action he takes is calculated, and stems from this ambition. Before he learns of the stone mask, he simply wants to steal Jonathan's life from him, literally. He wants to take his place as heir to the Joestar's fortune and influence, and even goes so far as to attempt to kill his adoptive father with poison to speed this process along despite the kindness shown to him by said adoptive father. This trend continues after he used the mask to become a vampire, with him spending his time largely contemplating things philosophically. His explanations for his actions from this point on are much larger in scope than just his own ambitions for himself. Rather than being content to just inherit the Joestar fortune, he sees himself as above all mankind and being uniquely qualified to decide its fate. It is for this very reason that Jonathan needed to undergo his journey to begin with; Dio had become a not just a personal threat, but a threat to the entire human race. Just about every single scene we get with Dio in Part 3 before his fight at the end is of Dio's philosophical contemplations and how they impact those around him. At this point he has realized that outright hostility isn't very efficient and that making people into zombies is a waste of effort. People make for much better servants when they are both alive and willing, and so he has adapted his approach into becoming a presence that inspires awe and respect. He only even uses the flesh bud in occasions in which he finds himself unable to win someone over for some reason, and probably devised that method out of a desire of avoiding the problems associated with using zombies. He has both philosophically and intellectually progressed beyond himself from Part 1, becoming terrifyingly efficient and familiar with his own limitations. Part 6's flashback scenes come off to me as very in character with all this context in mind, and with the context that they are being viewed through the perspective of how Pucci saw Dio. Through Pucci's eyes, we see Dio as a man deeply contemplative and philosophical, and yet also kind and trusting towards those willing to give him a chance despite his "condition". In reality, Dio was probably treating Pucci the way he treats all of his minions; generating trust and loyalty through manipulation. From Pucci's perspective, Dio was his best friend. From Dio's perspective however, Pucci was likely just another mostly disposable human to toss aside when the time is right but who could be useful for his own ambitions in the meanwhile.

Why was he driven to Jonathan? Who is he in the grand scheme of things? He believes his fate to be greatness, but with nothing to see left, what does that mean anymore? He has no rivals, so what purpose is there for him? I imagine the events that led him to Enya felt like everything needed to happen this way, and this may have reinforced something in his mind that leads him to his Heaven Plan. He saw himself as being the nexus of too many acts of fate to be anything less.

I always thought that Dio was way too drunk with power and potential in Part 1 (as shown in his attempts to make chimeras) and after he was forced to live aorund 100 years in the ocean, his mentality began to calm down and he had 100 years to develop new philosophy that would take final form in his pre-Part 3 flashbacks in Part 6. If Part 3 Dio was the same as in Part 1, he wouldn't hesitate to turn all his goons into vampires, but instead he made flesh buds that would influence, but still keep the original personality of the person he controlled and show off the bad side of them, which is shown in both Kakyoin and Polnareff, with Kakyoin being quite anti-social and lonely to the point he might've developed sociopathic tendencies, which would've been kept in-check by his good qualities, while Polnareff didn't changed that much, as he still had his honor, which is shown in his introduction, where he chose to approach the group and instead of sneaky attack, he announced himself and called for a duel. But there are also cases where flesh buds were unnecessary, which are shown in Hol Horse, possiblly J Geil and all of Egypt villains as he began to rely more on his charisma, rather than forced obedience. J Geil could be debated though, since he, like Enya, could've got a flesh bud, but due to his appearence, the war no flesh bud visible and he was probably paired with Hol Horse because of them joining Dio on their own accord. So even without Part 6 it is visble that Dio has changed from forcing his lordship over people with hypnosis and vampirism to seducing people with his charisma.

He kind of starts the whole philosophy thing at the end of Part 1. I guess all those times Jonathan kicked his ass made him take things more seriously. But yeah he gets smarter in his approach although that scene with Dio shouting bloody murder after Dire hurts his eye with a rose has Speedwagon pointing out that Dio likes to act all calm, cool, and collected but when you corner him or push his buttons he will lose it (which is precisely what happens in his fight with Jotaro). I also think it's funny Pucci really held Dio like the greatest person ever and when he encountered Donatello Versus he initially liked him because he was reminding him of Dio. But when Donatello started doing Dioish things (specifically stuff Dio would do in Part 1) Pucci started disliking him.

This is something for a while I had in mind but didn't find it opportune enough to share People often look down on jojo even if they enjoy it due to it being so "memey", as you noted even from part 1 the themes and highly defined outlooks from the characters enticed me, but also because many hear "part 1 bad!" Even if they get to watch it they ignore what is going on before their eyes, thus making their "inherited" judgements a self fulfilling profecy which sadly also applies to jojo as a whole.

Part 1 is a pretty straightforward story and the easiest JoJo part to follow, and yet people misunderstand the story and the characters. Specifically Jonathan himself which is kind of baffling.

Part 1 js also just really slow even though its the shortest, its very much just because retrospectively part 1 was not as good as the other parts since araki developed as a artist and writer, But also because other shows also developed and compared to those others it does seem Really basic, I imagine thats why most people tend to ignore it, when I re watched it it felt like a snail pulling a tow truck and made me feel like I needed to sleep, To note, it was the Dub for the re watch and well i watched the sub originally, which definitely was a bad choice when re watching and made the show lose a lot of the emotion, and probably added to the issue, and the dub in general does make All parts worse
@KimeruDerHund
@KimeruDerHund 6 ай бұрын
@BossKnight @BossKnight first 3 and last 3 episodes of anime part 1 are fast, or going nitro for ep 1, also nothing that you said, save for the dub, is an argument coming from what part 1 is, you just repeat the conclusion that it is bad (and wrongly assume araki hasn't written much by then) Also, yeah, english dubs might as well be abridged series
@BossKnight
@BossKnight 6 ай бұрын
@@KimeruDerHund 1. Thats your own opinion that those episodes go fast, me and my boyfriend (he can’t read and watch at the same time, thats why I had to rewatch it dubbed, and its his first time watch) Both were falling asleep at eveyr episode of part one and it took like 2 weeks to get through it, and then Part 2 was done in like 1 week cause it was much better, 2. Never said araki hadn’t written much by then, I was saying he was still developing as a writer and artist (and still is), And I never even said part 1 was bad, I said it wasn’t as good as later parts, which is a blatant fact, And that since Part 1 is Old, the other shows in its similar type and genre developed to the point where part 1 is no longer special and feels like the basic of tropes, 3. Dubs definitely aren’t Abridged, but they definitely assassinate the characters, in Dr Stone the dub basically makes Senku a asshole, Jojo Part 3 all emotion is lost in the dub, the part 1 and 2 dubs are actually pretty good, but do sound plain and boring and make some parts drag on, And jotaro basically gets the basic main character voice, Polnareff gets no accent, Avdol is always monotone, Kakyoin is actually pretty good, and old Joeseph was a really good pick for accuracy, But for all their emotions are absurdly toned down

One important thing about Dio is that he's so self-centered that it affects his common sense. The "heaven plan" is built on the assumption that all humans are selfish like him. Even when he tries to do the right thing, he just cant help himself and makes his plan to save the world all about his ego. His idea of "friendship" is somebody who idolizes him. Despite his sophistication, Dio is completely one-dimesnsional. He's so selfish that it stunts his growth. Even after escaping his underwater prison, Dio never left his own little world.

Words cannot describe how overjoyed I was seeing this in my recommended before bed. Dio is my favorite character in JoJo, and I am all too used to people decrying him as shallow, or not as fleshed out as other antagonists. In my not so humble opinion, Dio is above and beyond one of the best written and most compelling antagonists in all of fiction. Thank you very much for the effort and dedication you put towards your content, you always manage to impress. This is another one to add to my favorites list.

One more thing, a huge difference between Dio and Pucci is the ego level and wanting to rule. Through heaven plan Dio wanted to control fate, to be free from it, change it as he pleases, manipulate reality with the world over heaven (dunno why we shouldn't take this game into account since Araki worked on it too). It is not contradictory to his ideals from original series, set fate for everyone so that their goal is to praise him. Perfect unified world under his rule, no wars, no conficts since all humans are destined to serve him. Pucci lacks this lust for power and he doesn't want to rule humans. So all he wants is for humans to accept fate but he himself doesn't want to change it. Since for the original plan both of them needed to be alive, it's not that weird that when Dio realises this plan in the game he gains a different power over fate.
@sonpanchan
@sonpanchan Жыл бұрын
Exactly, this. It's been awhile since I read Stone Ocean (so correct me if I'm wrong) but do we ever find out what DIO wanted to achieve with Heaven? We know how he planned to execute his plan but we don't find out what his end goal with his was or what he wanted out of it other than it had to do with fate. I think the whole "Knowing one's fate" was Pucci's vision for his own Heaven plan which stemmed from his trauma of his life's misfortunes and his sister's death. I think DIO wouldn't be someone who would find peacefulness or acceptance if he found out that fate had shown him that he was going to eventually lose to Jotaro. He wouldn't be someone who wouldn't be satisfied with what he's given if it hinders his ambitions (Part 1 pis proof of that). DIO's Heaven would be controlling his and everyone else's fate and being the one who gets to dictate what fate is.
@STPstudio47
@STPstudio47 Жыл бұрын
@@sonpanchanYup, it's never metioned what Dio's goals were with that plan. And what they did in the game really fits his personality. My personal theory is that the heaven plan gives you a power over fate required to fullfil your ultimate goal which is why Dio obtained different power through the same plan (not exactly the same since like I said it differs from how Pucci executed it alone)
@pagan-ni-ni

araki never worked on it and dio specifically said that heaven for him is not becoming a winner but ultimate happiness. eyes of heaven contradicts this directly. also the heaven plan is pucci's vision, we are never shown what dio thought of it himself.

@@pagan-ni-ni In part 3 Dio states that to know no fear is to be the strongest. However in part 6 he says it doesn't provide eternal happiness. It's not contradiction, it's a further explanation of the topic. Dio's goal is to be the strongest and therefore control fate and find happiness

What’s crazy is, all parts until Part 7 tie back to Dio. Who is the villain of part 1? Dio. The stone masks in part 2 tie back to Dino’s transformation. Dio is the villain of Part 3. Dios influence on the Joestars getting stands is starting to affect everyone in the world in Part 4. Giorno is Dios son (Part 5). In Part 6, we see Dios boyfriend Pucci (lol) achieving heaven FOR dio. And finally in Part 7, We have Diego who is Dios counterpart. There could be some hints in Part 8 or 9, but I haven’t read them yet, so it’s hard to tell. I like how Araki corporates the whole reason we even have this series into each part, which is what makes Jojo a writing masterpiece.
