The first time I saw RJD in concert was the Black and Blue tour, Black Sabbath and Blue Öyster Cult. I was there to see Blue Öyster Cult and didn’t even know who Dio was, I knew Ozzy had left Black Sabbath but I had no idea who this little man on stage was with this hugely powerful voice. On this particular night Black Sabbath opened the show, I found out later that the two bands were switching nights on who would open the show. The whole night turned out to be one of the best concerts I ever went to, I loved BÖC and I got the added treat of seeing another headliner band on the same night, and Black Sabbath to boot, it was incredible. The next time I went to see Dio in concert it was on his Holy Diver tour and got to see Dio at his best as the headliner and the leader of his own band. I became an instant Dio fan. Rest In Peace Ronnie James Dio. Stay Cool 😎 and… \m/ Stay Metal \m/

@@chickenbeek - Halford is awesome, but, unlike RJD, he has had some tours where he sounded tired and wasn’t up to the standards he set. That’s not to disparage The Metal God, it simply underscores Ronnie’s unrivaled consistency and ability as a singer.
@chickenbeek2 жыл бұрын
@@crusheverything4449 h. i don' think it's fair to say in the context of touring that Halford was any less of a titan. Things happen. He's still out there to this day doing pretty well. And i've heard Ronnie over the decades not being on 100% too, but i mean even then he still amazing. Plus i think Halford probably did 2 tours compared to any of his counterparts in just one tour alone having to hit them notes that literally define the sound of priest night after night where Ronnie objectively had way more wiggle room.
@crusheverything44492 жыл бұрын
@@chickenbeek- It’s certainly a fair point that Halford has been at it as long as Ronnie now and still sounds good. I still say Dio was more consistent, but we’re talking about the two best in metal history, IMO and I would never say anything really negative about either. You are spot on Rebeka, he loved his fans and very appreciative of them. He can sing the softest of ballads (like "Rainbow Eyes" - with Rainbow) to opera like vocals ("Stargazer") to very heavy like ("Sign of the Southern Cross") or ever Doo Wop in his earlier days 1960 ("Blue Days Blue Nights" with Ronnie Dio and the Prophets). In my opinion, his best vocal performances were in the 1977 live Munich Rainbow concert singing "Mistreated" and "Catch the Rainbow"

Ronnie James Dio had been singing for 20+ years before this performance... so u can hear his talent & experience in his voice 🤘🤘Nothing like great rock n' roll to help you recover. Rainbow was the band he became famous in w/ Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple in the 70's, so he was upset about being fired from there, as well as parting ways w/ Black Sabbath... he felt like he wasn't appreciated. This performance featured Vinny Appice (drums), Vivian Campbell (guitar, currently in Def Leppard), the late Jimmy Bain (bass) and Claude Schnell (keyboards)... the first 2 Dio albums were heavy, and 'Rainbow in the dark' was definitely not a 'pop' song, but it must have felt like that in the studio, especially after that keyboard riff kept playing. What I don't understand is that when Dio recorded their 3rd album 'Sacred heart' in 1985, that record had a lot more keyboards and sounded more 'pop'... Vivian Campbell complained that it was not the record he envisioned, and his financial disagreements w/ Ronnie ended their partnership... Dio did the 'Sacred heart' tour w/ guitarist Craig Goldy, but the record did not reach platinum sales (it went gold). Maybe it was record company pressure that shaped that record... they had a huge hit w/ 'The last in line' in 1984 and they thought going w/ more keyboards would open their appeal to mainstream audiences, the same way they did to ZZ Top in 1983 w/ the 'Eliminator' album... Even Judas Priest went that synthesizer route w/ 'Turbo' (1986)... but neither album got those higher sales figures. Craig Goldy did a remarkable job on the 4th album 'Dream Evil' (1987), which was a heavy & aggressive effort... But Dio's popularity seemed to plummet ... Craig Goldy eventually quit, and then the rest of Dio bailed by 1989. In 1990, Dio released 'Lock up the wolves', which was a dark and heavy album... feat. Rowan Robertson (guitar) w/ Teddy Cook (bass), Jens Johansson (keyboards) and former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright. That album failed commercially... The 90's soon delivered Nirvana and Pearl Jam... and Dio was done for a while in 1991. Ronnie reunited w/ Black Sabbath for 1 more record ('Dehumanizer') in 1992, but quit the band in 1993 after refusing to open for Ozzy Osbourne. He returned w/ a new Dio line-up in '93 w/ the record 'Strange highways'.

I think it is poppy and a commercial sounding hit but it's brilliant and it's a great track and it worked perfectly for him at the time after he had left Sabbath and struck out on his own. The title track song "Holy Diver" was a bit dark and heavy for mainstream radio at the time so this became his signature track which his long time fans and new fans could appreciate equally; it introduced new listeners to his unique lyrical style involving esoteric visual analogies to try and make sense of a difficult modern world young people are learning to navigate and cope with.

I think its a pretty poppy song and i have heard it about a million times because i have been a huge fan since the 80´s. That said it isnt a pop song or something thats smooth and buttery it is also pretty hard and heavy at the same time and Dios powerful voice isnt holding back so its clearly a heavy metal song but with the build of a pop song. It is also a very very simple song which consists of only two guitarriffs, the verse riff is the same as the chorus riff but on the chorus the keyboard part is played on top of the riff and there is also a bridge riff, these same riffs are also used for the solo. Being a guitarplayer as well as a heavy metal songwriter i think its impressive that they managed to make such a good song out of just two riffs and that it was one of Dios biggest songs.

I met RJD after a concert in the mid 90s when he was touring very small venues. He took time to meet and sign autographs for everyone that wanted to talk to him. A buddy that went to the concert with me brought his scrapbook of RJD memorabilia that went back to the Black Sabbath days. Dio spent about 15 minutes with us, going through my buddy's scrapbook and telling little stories about things he remembered from tours that my friend had ticket stubs and newspaper clippings from. Then he wrote a long thank you message in my friend's scrapbook and RJD told him it was fans like him that make being a rock star worthwhile. Pure gold. He was genuinely appreciative of the money, time, and emotion that fans spent on and gained from his music. What a classy guy. RIP, Dio!
