You're picking at an unhealed wound there, Mitchum. Bought my Dior Homme in 2005 - literally the weekend it was released. I was fresh out of uni. Took it on holiday and - no I didn't lose it - I gave it to the hotel bellboy as I didn't have cash for a tip. Then forgot about it. Haven't been able to replace it since. Yaaaaaaay. @@RichMitch Well I mean I've tried and got outbid a couple of times. You've said it in the video - I don't want to pay hundreds of paaands for it! I don't want to pay what these gougers are asking. I want to pay what Selfridges was asking in 2005!!!!!!!! Does someone have a Delorean I can borrow? In the end though, I made do with Polge's twin creation Valentino Uomo which, to my nose, excels in verisimilitude don't you find?

@@-HRH it's similar but not as tight or Rich as 2005. It smells more like 2011 version tbh, filled out with more bulking agents like iso e super etc. Same framework but the difference in budget shows

Great review! Big wide brushstrokes on the 2011 vs many fine brushstrokes on the 2005 is the perfect analogy. I go back and forth on which one I prefer. The original 2005 was sweeter, but a better fragrance overall, and with better ingredients. OTOH 2011 is easier to wear & enjoy and feels a touch more modern and masculine.

I feel like demachy made it an easier wear and more socially acceptable to a greater number of people but Polge's version was purer and truer

Well done, Mitch. I don't comment much, but I'm around... lurking at least. You sound better, and it seems you're feeling much better, too. I'm glad. I never got on with any of the Dior Homme originals. Never tried the Intense or Parfum. However, its Italian counterpart---- Prada L'Homme Intense, is an iris that was (and still is) more to my taste. I still have a 2018 or so bottle of the black stem Homme Original. I revisit it from time to time. Who knows. And a bottle of Homme Eau; now that's an interesting concoction! Dior Homme 2020, though, is an easy love for me. It's simple without being basic. The entire *reworked* Homme line is wonderful, actually. I think Demachy is/was quite underrated. That might be a minority opinion, hehe. *shrug*

Thanks for that, I am feeling better I really appreciate you saying 🫂 For me, demachy is a strange beast. I love some of his work at Dior, genuinely. Leather oud, ambre nuit, cuir cannage, Eau sauvage 12 and 17, Fahrenheit absolute are all amazing and his Fahrenheit EDT reformulation was fantastic... But, there are some absolutely awful things in his time too. Maybe I should do a video covering his time at Dior? I did a little one a while back

2005 is a Rembrandt @ the met. 2011 is the reproduction you hang in your study. Notes in the 2005 blend seamlessly, 2011 heavy. I prefer the 2005 but still think 2011 holds it’s own, apart from the overdosing of bergamot at the top. 2020 is the modern masculine iso e and citrus. All I get. Mass appeal, people pleasing, easy going. Good scent for a teenager or young adult. A seasoned nose will see past the scent and see it for what it truly is, mediocre.

Truth. Us consumers need to see our money as a reward for a job well done, to make a statement with our spending, no matter what that product is. Even paying more money on eBay for an older bottle, it makes a statement that we won’t be fed from the trough of mediocrity, it’s a game of attrition with these brands to se what we’ll accept and how much we’re willing to lower our standards year over year.

Definitely 2005 for me. I perceive it a little differently than others. The mix of iris and cacao comes of as hazelnut. And the lavender gives off a slight barbershop vibe. Definitely the most complex of the line, definitely attributable to the fact that Polge perfumed it.

I got valentino uomo intense to satiate my desire for og dior homme, as someone who was close with their grandmother and loves old time powdery makeup smells. Unfortunately I don't wear the Valentino a lot and I wear dior homme 2020 every other day or so lol

I can't stand the Dior homme 2020, I think a big part of that is Dior's cynicism in releasing a totally different and subpar perfume in the a legend's bottle and used the name to get it to sell

Although there is Dior Homme Original it has very weak sillage and longevity :( I had 2005 version and I remember it was stronger not a beast, but still... I wonder have you compered it to Valentino Uomo by Pole? I find them really similar, but Uomo is sweeter and more chocolatey. I wish that Francis could reformulate Dior Homme and make it more potent.

Was 42 when the silver stem hit the department store and I remember when the lady sprayed me a sample,I was less than impressed with the feminine smelling scent masquerading as a Pour Homme?? Lol Anyways moving forward to today and leaving the man cave far behind ( but still loving the big eighties vintages for men ) but what a transformation the world of fragrance has taken ,for better or worse ,man we all just have to be in awe how so much variations,variety and versatility the world of perfume is right now, and what perfumers and fragrance artists are achieving with the art in general ✌️🙏👍 ya gotta love it Rich ,just keep sniffing,smelling and telling mate ✌️🥂

Also is outregous how the house Frederic Malle in particulary Maurice Roucel stole the DNA of Dior Homme 2020 and released it as Uncut Gems, However after further self research the earliest perfume released with this DNA was by Tom Ford called "Tom Ford By Men" in 2007, which truly is a reminder how visionary the perfumes of Tom Ford actually are, and also Costume National made something very similar in 2009 as "Costume National Homme". - Sepehr

I wear my 2014 DH more than my 2005 batch. Interestingly, my 2018 DH smells a lot closer to my 2014 DHI than it does my 2014 DH. More potent and dark - an odd choice to make them more similar. I suspect it’s because DHI sold much better?

That is a possibility or maybe your bottle has oxidised at a different rate or something. I'm not sure when reforms of Dior homme took place after 11 but you can be almost certain that they did. Think my latest bottle is a 16 🤔

Haaa but Rich what do you think about Dior homme intense 2020 reform..? I actually like it..for me they’ve ramped up the cacao note from the 2012 version and I also get more iris too..I’ve never understood the bad reviews it got tbh

OG DH was really lightning in a bottle. Highly unlikely, even Polge at Chanel or FK at Dior now can reach that level in a mainstream release.

I really enjoy Dior homme original to me it smells fantastic it’s one of my favorites I have. I think Dior homme intense is nice but it’s almost too much. The 2020 version I’m my opinion smells awful and I’m new to fragrances I don’t know how anyone could wear this and think they smell nice or pleasant. To wear this to work or out on a date would be dangerous I think.

Especially when you've been talking about being on an elemi kick lately, I get some of that and it's lovely. And I honestly can't see anything that smells like it. I even asked you for recs based oj it in your stream a few weeks back and you couldn't tell me any and got others to give me some recommendations. On Fragrantica no one seems to have listed others that smell even remotely close barring the Dior Homme Sport release in 2021. Oh and BdC which imo has a slight resemblance and that's it.
