This is my favorite version. He's 100% emotionally invested in the performance. Perhaps being a tribute to Nelson Mandela made it more special.

You know you are respected and admired when you have Eric Clapton show up as your backing guitarist. Mark is without doubt my favorite musician from my 65 years on this planet. I was lucky enough to see dire Straits live in Amsterdam and Berlin at the height of their powers. I consider myself very fortunate.

Mark always pours his soul into this song and gives such an emotional performance every time. In a recent interview Mark was recounting this concert and said the noise of the crowd was absolutely incredible. Somebody told him right before they went on stage that more than 600 million people were watching (since it was also being broadcast). He also said he remembers thinking he had to feed the fish when he got home 😂 Hard to imagine someone can be so unbelievably talented and humble and down to earth at the same time.

Even if you've never experienced war personally, this transports you into the heart of someone who has seen and experienced the pain, suffering and the bonds forged in that experience. It's heartbreaking and exhilarating at the same time. Because that is what life is.

I understand you so well, Dominica. It's not passionate love, it's something different, it's connection with his music and that music comes from him, and as I love his music I love him. I don't know if I'm explaining myself well, because it's something strange.

Mark knopfler is one of the rare talents, along with a handful of very small handful of others, that understand how to lul you into an experience, he understands that you don't have to have the volume knob at 10, he starts soft and using knobs not a giant effects board, to bring you in deeper and take you on a journey. A subtle touch that brings you to climax as he brings the intensity up. A true player by all means. And very well respected in the guitar world.

Sometimes we marvel at guitar work that is fast and amazing, but equally as impressive is guitar playing like this where the notes have space to breathe & the silence in between is just as wonderful and important as the notes themselves. So evocative.

Dominica, before you paused it, I could see that you had more emotion invested in this version than the other two, I thought you were going to tear up. I think this is the best version of brothers and Arms, Mark put so much more into that guitar at the end than the other two versions. This song Mark is nearly overcome with emotion himself. He wants to say more at the start and beginning but doesn’t have control over his voice so doesn’t say what he was going to say. The first words of the song aren’t clear. N at the end can’t say what he wants. His eyes are also very glassy too. I have heard the song many many time. Beautiful

Simply a wonderful live performance of this beautiful song, every time I hear it I am taken back to my days of service and to those soldiers I served with. We often hear the words they laid down their lives for their country. But I believe it is not that at all I would lay down my life for my mates the soldiers in front ..behind ..or beside me never would I think of my country at that moment I serve my country but they are my brothers in arms..they are who I fight for just as they fight for me. "Feed the fish," indeed! That's exactly what he does! I wonder if he knew he was alluding to the "loaves and fishes?" 😂 "I've witnessed your suffering," is the phrase that gets me thinking he's 'channeling' some etheric friend(s). His songs that have multiple, dynamically different 'movements'--I'm just sure he was Beethoven in a previous embodiment. 🥰 You two are the best at this btw; with Knopfler, it's good to wear your heart on your sleeve, or you're missing out, imo.
