Loved it as ever kid, it's archetypal early Straits and of course in the same vein as Sultans, you really cracked it there, well done. So you've survived the camp out in Kingussie, I know the fish suppers are superb up there, so here's another travel story for today. A middle aged couple are on holiday in Malta and half way through their fortnight the fella is pretty well fed up with the local beer, he tells his Missus he's going out the hotel for a paper, walking along a street he hasn't seen before he spots the GEORGE AND DRAGON pub across the street, brilliant he thinks at last a decent pint, crosses the road and sees the doors are closed, looks at his watch is at 2:30 pm, he thinks to himself what's this shit, so bangs on the door, a horrible big fat woman shouts from a window above "what the f*** do you want ?", he takes one look at her and says " IS GEORGE IN ?". take care kid.

Wow Paul. What an amazing deep dive into this song! So far past what I thought you’d do with it, even after some years I’m still awestruck at you ability to hear things that I’ve never heard within a song. Watching you then listening to the tune unlocks so many new things that I’ll then look out for as I listen again and again! Amazing also the dipping in you do to other tunes Communiqué and Layla and so on! Just within the blink of an eye you can surf through so many tunes it’s astounding. The thing for me that really sticks out is the chickin’picking and dead notes - it’s like you just unlocked a new level in my brain. Using those dead notes to articulate everything wowowowowow! I could go on for hours but the point is simply - thank you that was fantastic! Gonna spin up the record now and it’ll be like hearing it for the first time again 🔥🎸

Really early on in my playing, I focused on my vibrato. I knew that it was a huge part of making my playing my own. I thought I had it figured out all these years later. Paul, your vibrato is next level stuff. I've learned (and copied) a lot of the nuances in your approach. If you're looking for ideas for a video, and feel like sharing, do one on your approach to vibrato. If you've done so, my bad and I'll have another look through the archives. If not, I'd imagine I'm not the only one who's taken notice of your technique. But be forewarned, I will soak up all of your secrets and make them my own lol. Thanks for sharing your passion. Gus

Brilliant lesson, and you show what mastery you possess. You really nailed this one. It's so under your skin this technique that I suspect you've played your fair share of Dire Straits songs with your former band and when you're out buskin' the streets. I've also listened a lot to Mr. Knopfler and especially the "Communiqué" album. My bad is I never spent time learning the licks in depth. Thanks for this lesson, taking me back to the days I was just starting out on guitar, borrowing my brother's guitar and amp. Those were the days! Cheers, Thor

Most renditions of this on youtube (all?) completely ignore Mark's expressive use of vibrato ...whereas you have nailed it perfectly. I generally pull down on the string (where possible, G & D strings) when playing this type of vibrato 1:51 1:55 and especially at 2:02 but I notice you have no problem with control when bending up! I can do it both ways but I find I get more sustain when pulling the string towards the floor .. do you happen to know which mark himself prefers?

Hi Paul, great playing. Just wondering what settings you typically have you Romany 12 set on? Do you have the EQ engaged all the time? I'm thinking of getting one. Thanks!
@paulstaffordcook87992 жыл бұрын
Hi Karl. Yes, I rarely use EQ cut….. but that’s not to say it’s bad. Actually it’s great, but it’s a strong flavour - boxy and full of mids - nice once and a while but not all the time. In fact, I used the EQ cut on my “My childhood heroes / Knopfler” vid kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqDPpn1ridh0g80. If you scroll to 1:40 I’m playing Brothers in Arms with that setting. But 99% of the time I don’t engage it. And my EQs are always around noon on the amp. I do love that amp, hence why it features so much on my channel 😊
@karlwilson20212 жыл бұрын
@@paulstaffordcook8799 thanks Paul, that setting sounds great with the Les Paul. Would you say the lowest attenuation setting on the Romany is quiet enough for late night practice?
@paulstaffordcook87992 жыл бұрын
Yes, and that’s this amp’s strengths…. That 4 stage attenuation is a god send. On the quietest setting (D I think 🤔), then at no. 1 on the volume it’s quiet but warm and clean. At no. 2 on the volume it starts adding a little hair to the notes (but still bedroom volume). At no. 3….. who needs an overdrive pedal 🤣. At 4 and beyond it really compresses beautifully, but not much louder. Hence why I’m on setting D 100% of the time. Late at night, I’ll have it on no. 1 on the volume but add a dirt pedal just to add the breakup that’s missing at no. 1. Hope this helps 😊

Hi Skullish. This would have been my Cornell Romany 12 amp, which is a typical “Fender style” sound to it. The EQ’s were at noon, the volume was bedroom volume, i.e. number 2, so a fairly clean sound. Little bit of reverb from my Strymon Flint and that’s about it 😊

So that's why you had to have that Strat!😄

Authentic, it could well be Mr Knopplfer himself.

Beautiful. But already done by Mark Knopfler. Write your own great song. Your guitar skills are fantastic.
