Knopfler was an important figure in paving the way for a lot of the roots/Americana trends that came along in the 90's. It was also music like this that made filmmakers take notice and hire him to handle their soundtracks.

My favorite too. Knopfle/DS paints pictures & tells stories very well with tone, volume, production, the careful inclusion of instruments & touches thru the song. Very enjoyable and when he wants, impactful.

Fantastic. Never remember hearing this....these lyrics are so soulfully woeful and descriptive like an updated Civil war song. The modulated guitar part sounds like canon fire.

The way Mark plays the dobro on this track is just sublime. 🙂🙂 To me, the whole album is one of my two favourites by the band, the other being Communiqué.

One of my favorites off this album/CD. I always imagine it's a former Na.zi who was "just following orders." The record company made them change to "Your sister gave me diamonds and I gave them to your wife". Mark sang in concert "Your sister gave me diamonds, and I laid down with your wife." The title track is in a class of it's own...

Yeah, so good. People can say it sounds dated, but they’re missing the point because it’s just beautiful in any era. It really is the deep tracks that make this album great. They are definitely the best songs on the record.

I always think of Manuel Noriega, holed up in that church while the U.S. Army waiting outside blasting music at him. He had this enormous inferiority complex, and he had the predecessor/mentor that overshadowed him in his mind like this. I don't think that's what the song is about, but it works!

I liked this one a lot more than many of the other songs on this album, but they are mostly all good songs. The bit at the end. Is that recent? Sounded like some Rush in there... :)

The only thing that keeps me from really liking this song are Mark's vocals. I just don't care for his Dylan/Cale sort of sound.
