Smashing stuff, this always reminds me of my home town (Whitley Bay) and the Spanish City fairground where, circa 1971, in our early teens, we tried in vain to pick up girls (a case of fast women and loose motorcycles!). The town is now a sad relic of a byegone age when people flocked from all over for seaside holidays. Mr Knopfler, you have illuminated my life for 34 years now. Bless all who appreciate real music.

Phenomenal song - Mark Knopfler flows like a river's powerful current or a soothing stream & he pleases !

Can't believe this is almost 45 years old - and too - recognising how my old guitar teacher at school (Cliff N) was asked to join DS in the mid 70s but decided not to as their rehearsal room was in South London - but he was based in Epping Forest (as was MK at the time it seems). Brilliant song - brilliant lyrics - and just goes to show that good would-be journalists are often way better as guitarists...( i believe MK studied journalism in Harlow College - as - sadly did I.

What about the amazing gentlely picked middle 8 from 5:55 on! Just fantastic! Truley Mark Knopfler can play, he and Jimi Hendrix are the reason i play guitar and love it so ferosciously! Ha ha

Mark Knopfler tmb é a razão de eu tocar. A primeira vez que vi ele tocando pensei: " tenho que aprender a tocar esse instrumento!"

Yes just beautiful.

@TedBoyRomarino That was the keyboard tech at the time as Knopfler had to start playing guitar before the organ part finished. He used to 'hide' under the organ to do this!

I heard that drummer Pick Withers left DS after LOG to pursue a jazz drumming career. From what little I know of professional drumming, like Keith Carlock from the Steely Dan tour who could have chosen a rock or pop direction, but because he chose jazz and moved to NY, he is an established jazz percussianist. Pick may have done something similar by choosing to become a professional in the jazz field. Best of luck to him.

@jOntzhor - I agree that Mark's guitar is too quiet at the beginning of the song, and that the top 'E' string goes flat towards the end of the song. I thought this when I first heard this version on the Dire Straits Live At The BBC album

@some comments below: never mind the quality, hear the talent. better version later on - especially the one uploaded by italian music lover with 8 minute guitar solo at end of tunnel of love. i play it before bed so i can sleep with something good in my head.

whose is that hand at the organ at 0:39???? By the way, this is the first time i've seen Mr. Knopfler playing other instrument than the guitar!

Whoever was on the soundboard must have been drunk. Can hardly hear Hal's rhythm and was too much bass drum. At the 5:30 mark, you can't Mark's strumming through you can hear his finger picking...either that or my old ears are bad! Still, good find and good post, thank you.

So UNDER-rated for the lyrics too… Knopfler is the 'GREAT AMERICAN POET', light years ABOVE Jim 'the Lizard King' Morrison, who can barely lace his shoes…
