“Better” animals become way to specialised and any small environmental change can wipe them out very quickly. Dire wolves died out because the large prey items they specialised in hunting declined or died out. It’s the same for terror birds like titanis, they went extinct due to deforestation thanks to a cooling climate which also meant many of the prey items they specialised in hunting went extinct too. Meanwhile the extinction of the seemingly “superior” titanis meant that animals like smilodon gracilis could evolve to become much larger evolving into species like smilodon fatalis which were bigger than gracilis are more suited to the new larger open plains prey
@lemongrab61739 ай бұрын
Not really. It’s all about the abundance of flora. As flora grows in numbers so do the herbivorous fauna but the fauna also grow in size. However with changing environment many of said flora go extinct resetting the process but eventually at one point the surviving flora also grow more and more resilient. Eventually when the flora reaches a point where it maintains its abundance and all become resilient, the fauna will also remain and continue to grow in size. Sadly the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs reset the whole floral adaptations leaving a very small few with god like resilience. Currently floral life has regained a great level of its Cretaceous cousins resilience meaning most major environmental changes will have little to no effect. Current fauna is once again at the point of unimpeded size growth, eventually even humans within the next million years will grow to the size of bisons. Even a meteorite won’t stop the current eras megafauna evolutionary growth rate. The only reason we think current fauna is small is because we’re at it’s early phases. And believe it or not the animals that exist today are the largest fauna of all time. Except they mainly exist in the seas. The blue whale is planet earths largest animal of all time. The human factor may speed up or straight up completely reset or pause this process. Hard to tell.

Calling Canis a family can create a lot of confusion though, given it's only a genus and making appear as though Dire Wolves weren't Dogs (Canids) at all, I'd say the more accurate analogy would be rather than a sister species of the Grey Wolves, it was an older cousin.

I'm not sure where their supposed relation to jackals comes from. From what I can find, while they are in the subtribe canina (along with dogs, wolves, coyotes, jackals, dholes and African wild dogs), dire wolves are the most basal member of the group, therefore are less closely related to jackals than any other member of the canina

It comes from a 2021 study of their sequenced DNA. It shows us that their last common ancestor with wolves and dogs was around 5.7mya, where their last common ancestor with jackals was 5.1mya.

The funniest thing is that there's speculation in the biology community that the Honshu Wolf was a dire wolf. The reason they speculate this is because the Hokaido Wolf was given a DNA test and while they went extinct 150ish years ago. They were functionally just American grey wolves living on the northern island of Japan. The Honshu wolf however had a different story. They died out about 1905, that was when they were declared extinct at least, but every time we do DNA tests on them, we don't get close matches to say that they're actually a wolf of any variety. Which means, assuming you believe that the cryptid research community is correct, dire wolves are still alive, they're... just probably a small pocket of less than 100 roaming the Japanese countryside
