This was Hobi’s moment. RM and Suga killed it, per usual, but Hobi came in so hard and never let up. This is one of my favorite performances. I’ve never seen Hobi look so good. He’s so underrated as a rapper because he’s lead to 2 of the best the business has ever seen, but people forget that it’s not 2 of the best, it’s 3. He’s every bit as good, all 3 have their own style, and he’s goddamn impressive. Then he smiles and he’s pure sunshine.

97% of the time, the rap line each write their own lyrics that they rap. BTS and Big Hit both feel strongly believe that to rap authentically, you need to be writing your verses. RM has said before that the three rappers often (though not always) use their three rap sections in a song (even group songs with all seven members) to set up a thesis + antithesis --> synthesis structure. Where two rap verses set up oppositional forces to each other and the third one merges them. They seem to do this by writing their verses independently, coming together and seeing how their ideas mesh and contradict each other and then working them into a more holistic story. In general, the vocal line's lyrics have been written by RM or another in-house lyricist. THAT BEING SAID, as the band has gotten older, the vocalists have become much more involved in lyric writing, composing and even producing. (We are hoping for mix tapes from each of them!), so in their newer songs (map of the soul 7, BE albums) or singles released on sound cloud, the vocalists were likely very involved in the lyrics/music as well. (that's not to say vocalists never wrote lyrics or composed before those two albums, but if you are looking for a 'general rule of thumb', that's a good one to follow.) After each album is released, RM sits down and gives a live stream where he talks about the production and story behind each song and the roles different members played. That being said, he has said REPEATEDLY that he doesn't like to give the 'meaning' behind songs because "once a song is released, it belongs to the listener". He feels so strongly about the audience owning the music and coming up with their own interpretations that he refused to publish official lyrics to his 2018 mix-tape mono, allowing listeners to even 'hear' different words. Fans will love to give you info about songs precisely because the songs come from BTS's own lives and experiences -- so having the context helps audiences understand the emotions/worries/fears/background behind the words -- but BTS themselves would never want you to use that as some type of 'official' intepretation. I love all your reactions and I love this song!

This was their “breakup” song. When Yoongi presented the melody to the members;they all cried. Meaning of tear to Namjoon was “crying “. To Suga tear meant to “rip apart “. And Hobi was fear. The fear of “losing his members”. These songs just hit differently once you know there meaning.

This was them potentially disbanding. They cried about it while delivering their speech at the MAMA Awards in Hong Kong(2018). I wish you can react to that video. "He was the perfect one to sing this part". Yes, that's exactly what they as a group and as artists prioritize. That's why the line distribution isn't necessarily even in their songs. There've been incidents where fans of a certain member have been dissatified with their fave's lack of lines and acted out. They (now) generally ensure that everybody has a part but the song itself matters to them as well and you can tell that they really care about what they create. The rap line is a little special because they tend to write their own verses but I'm speaking of all of them as a whole group.

Exactly! Many of their songs are also connected with references (lines, music, etc) from other songs (or even speeches) or continuations of themes. That’s why it’s always good to (at some point) listen to albums in order so you can get a fuller picture of what they are trying to say. What you spoke on about at the end is exactly the frustration is with them. No one in my life will give the time to break down then lyrics and understand any of their songs. They don’t understand why I watch and learn so much about their music. They just say I am looking for validation that I like what I like. But I’ve never experienced music or an artist before that has made me want to go out and learn more about psychology or read several books (Dante’s Inferno, Omelas short story, etc.) to understand. And I feel like that is half the fun and it’s what makes music resonate and never get old. With generic songs, you play them enough and get bored, I’ve found with BTS I never do. Each time it plays I’m either bopping to the beat, recalling lyrics , or being distracted by vocals.

From Doolset - Written by DOCSKIM, Shin Myung-soo, SUGA, RM, j-hope Note: The lyrics have both tear (tir; as in crying) and tear (ter; as in ripping apart), to be rhymed with fear. In EP.6 of Break The Silence, SUGA shared, “The lyrics for Tear were written for the members. When I was writing the melody, at the time, we were deeply contemplating whether we should quit or not. When I played the song for the members, we all cried together.” I think that goes some way to explain the real pain that underlies this song and each performance. Thank you for your reaction to this! I agree that this song is customised to each voice so precisely that the verses feel like they are coming directly from each performer. They have been living together for ten years now - some of the members for slightly less, but these three it is now fully ten years. They know each other so well that, at times, it looks like they are limbs of the same body. Like you, I like to look deeper, even if I am not very good at finding explanations, because even without a clear explanation, the substance of what they are talking about is real and true. Most KPop does little for me - the artists are very obviously very skilled, but it is rare for idols to be allowed much artistic freedom so the songs often seem very superficial and repeating moments from the same subject themes. BTS dives. I have not been able to actually show BTS to any of my small number of friends - and frankly, I don't know if I could bear to see that kind of polite, bland reaction. Several times I have asked them to explore for themselves, but, while one of them said she had listened to some stuff, I really DO NOT know if I believe that she really listened. Maybe played it in the background perhaps. I want them to make even the smallest effort to understand! It makes me sad. I can't help thinking that one friend in particular might need BTS (ish) - has been buffeted with awful working relationships and escaping from one narcissistic supervisor and then found herself in a new job with a new company, and another narcissist!
@MariaChavez-ey5sr2 жыл бұрын
Oh you just described my concern about showing friends BTS, a “polite bland reaction”. Because if you dig the tiniest bit and pay attention it’s so deep and wonderful but they won’t trust me. Now my BFF does tease me and bought me a Love Myself shirt for xmas so she won’t listen (yet) but I’m hoping.
@anaastorga62052 жыл бұрын
I feel your comment about sharing BTS and having a polite, bland reaction. My BFF would so benefit emotionally from BTS's music but I fear she'll dismiss it and not really listen because of the 'boyband' label and the language barrier. So many people miss out! They really are healing and empowering.
@TaylorCanada82 жыл бұрын
I understand what you mean about wanting to share BTS with friends, but struggling with trying to help people understand the power of BTS. Unless someone is invested in discovering them on their own, it's impossible for them to understand. I too have friends that I know would be helped by BTS (struggling with self-love etc), the response is usually "that kind of music isn't my thing" which is laughable because they do so many genres. I feel sorry for people who haven't (and may never) understand the depth of BTS....it's usually impossible to explain.

Just a small note about the line “our end came in two characters” In Korean he says 글자 which can be translated at “letters [of the alphabet]” but Korean is written in syllables kind looking like a Chinese character (as in it’s a combo of letters that form one sound). So in this context he’s talking about the 2 syllables that make the word “이별” which is both “breakup” but also “parting”.

General rule fo thumb, Rapline almost always 95% of the time, write their own verses. Sometimes other rappers might write the rap for the other but generally they all write their own rap verses and they also write for the vocal line. Vocal line have written songs for themselves as well but when it comes to BTS group related solos, sometimes its vocal line writing their own with others or its the rapline and other big hit regulars helping write. But Rapline usually write their own. But this song my god. It was sad enough but when Yoongi revealed what this song is really about we cried. And we only found out the truth in their documentary that dropped in 2020. As for Outro Tear, the boys wrote their own verses but they also helped each other out and had other writers in as well.

You said "these guys, all 7 belong here on stage" The sad part is, at that time, they weren't sure they could continue. Everything was happening so fast they weren't sure they could handle it. But the thought of giving up, disbanding and loosing each other was to much for them to handle. That's why when they were writing this song, they all cried.When you know this, this performance really hits you hard, They were contenplating giving up on their dream. It makes me cry every time, They decided they had to at least try. And we "Army" are thankful that they did.

T.E.A.R. is related to psychology. It's about the tasks of grief: T = to accept the reality of the loss. E= experience the pain of the loss. A= adjust to the new environment without the person lost. R= reinvest in the new reality. You said "they were made to it (stage)" and that's why we have them til now. It was the reason they decided not to disband in 2018. Their way to put every problem on the table and discuss it to solve it it's awesome, I would like to be this way...

Thank you for this!!! You asked about Suga’s verse when he spelled T.E.A.R. This refers to the tasks of grief: T = To accept the reality of loss E = Experience the pain of the loss A = Adjust the new environment without the lost person R = Reinvest in the new reality Tear is a piece of their heart. Its heart wrenching for us too.

Suga's vocals and lyrics ARE raw. That is a perfect way to describe him. This is why I am so drawn to his work...he brings his entire soul into everything that he does. This song makes me cry but at the same time it is so beautiful that they were able to express themselves in this way and work through their emotions. And its so relatable because everyone of us has been through this process.

So glad you did live. The energy, interplay of RM, Suga and J Hope live, the best! That Suga wrote it about them talking about disbanding and how they cried hearing it. The intensity shows the deep feelings this brings to them. Still can relate to anyone in a break up situation.

I read a comment once that I thought was spot on: RM writes/raps from his brain, Yoongi from his soul, J-Hope from his heart. A tip: the listener can take the lyrics in any direction they want, that's why their music is brilliant, it resonates on many levels, but they RARELY write about romantic relationships. They're either talking to their haters, to Army, to each other, to their families. I LOVE and appreciate that about them! 💜

In this song, my Suga (bias) is extremely sad and angry at the same time. Normally, he just raps passionately. So, this is a special song. Also, LOL, I just got to the part when Roscoe said "they're not the same people" and actually laughed hysterically for a minute. I remember the cognitive dissonance I felt when I got to the Episodes 20s-30-ish of RunBTS when the beasts I watch performing on stage are more and more unlikely to be the same nerds, klutzes, and airheads I watch on RunBTS. It's just not possible.

Roscoe I have been trying to tell you. They all have pluralities about them. All 7 of them. If you ever get around to Hobi’s Boy Meets Evil, you will see his dark side. And of course the dancing and cinematography is insane. Suga’s Shadow is the same and deals with mental health and loneliness. When you start getting into the run BTS etc you will see how funny and loving they are. The millisecond they step on stage, they turn into absolute beasts. Whether it be dancing, singing, rapping or whatever. You hit it on the head, they are all meant to do this. Consummate professionals and total beasts!!

I’m thankful I got to see this performed live. I wish I could upload my fancam of the audience, during the chorus of this song, here. It’s so loud, we probably echoed for miles. This song hits me in, perhaps, a strange way. I was 8 years old when I began to actively hate my body. (Unfortunately all too common for dancers and gymnasts.) This song speaks to me about trying to hang on to a healthy relationship with myself. Torn between self-loathing and desperately wanting to love myself. Something I've struggled with for over 30 years. And that's the fantastic thing about art-and BTS in particular-the connection the music makes with our own personal stories and feelings.

What I love about BTS is all the layers. The outer layer is just feeling the vibe of the song. Next we start the looking at the visuals. Then we move on to the lyrics, the details, the story. With some of the songs/albums, I am reading books that are referenced in the lyrics (Kafka on the Shore in the song Butterfly, Omelas for Spring Day, Damien for the whole Wings album and related MVs and short films...) SUGA shared, “The lyrics for Tear were written for the members. When I was writing the melody, at the time, we were deeply contemplating whether we should quit or not. When I played the song for the members, we all cried together.” Two letters are 이별, meaning parting Yes, the members write their own parts after given the melody/beat and concept, and then collaborate and refine.

FYI - All legit Rappers write their own lyrics, so RM, Suga and Hobi always write their own parts, at least on the rap songs.

In the Ciphers you can really tell the difference in their personalities depending on their verses as well. I mean, each of them are answering back and dissing their haters and critics but they each do it in their own way. For example Suga is extremely petty. And I say that with a smirk because I LOVE petty Suga. He brings me joy. And NamJoon lyrically runs circles around them so that they know they’ve been insulted but their not smart enough to figure out how.

Roscoe, I'm glad you didn't delete your comments. You made good points. You couldn't get all your ideas out at once. BTS would say SO WHAT! (It's a song title.) They can't do it either! BTS has used MANY songs to address these topics of regret, self-loathing, and changing oneself to suit others. And they've used many MORE songs to moderate ARMY's expectations, encourage acceptance, and foster introspection, personal growth, and taking responsibility for managing one's own feelings. It can't all be crammed into one song, nor one comment, and that's okay! Borahae! 💜💜💜

I loved being in the premiere.. the chat with the couch crew was awesome.. but ya'll finished the sprite before giving me some 😂😂.. anyways.. this song is a masterpiece.. SPOILER ALERT Mr. Roscoe.. don't read the rest of this comment if you don't want to know the reason behind this song.. While song actually ties into the whole theme of Love Yourself: Tear album and it's the perfect outro to the album.. it describes in beautiful poetry how parting in a relationship means.. and how you imagine seeing the true meaning of love when you go through such times.. however Suga has said that they wrote this song in a time when they considered disbandment.. they were all going through a tough time in the time between 2015-2017.. they were receiving much hate for no reason.. and ARMY had always supported them through these tough times.. and it was also the time when they started getting famous internationally and it felt very overwhelming for them.. but in the end they pulled themselves together and helped each other to stay strong.. and here we are.. still on this journey in 2022.. Suga said he played this song when they were all gathered together and they all cried after hearing it.. which explains how deep and emotional this song is.. and how much it means to them.. which you can see in their eyes during performing it.. it's a powerful song.. and like you said.. you can be going through something like a breakup or any kind of parting and play this song and let it all out.. again BTS songs can relate to everyone.. Thank you Mr. Roscoe for hanging out.. it was a pleasure.. see you next time.. purple you 💜💜💜💜💜

O M G ROSCOE!!! Besides Mono, I have been quietly waiting for you to react to any song from the LY Tear album! On the ibighit site, the description says "LOVE YOURSELF 轉 ‘TEAR’ album embodies the pain of boys faced with parting." Many of my favourite tracks are on this album as the lyrics really hit me hard, like a good upper cut. Outro Tear is my favourite BTS track.. Feels like my past troubles around loss are perfectly compacted in a song. All the questions from the confusion, to the T.E.A.R model of grief, to the fear from all the emotional flashbacks that repeats. Then years later learning what it was really about.. 🤯 It is like a leet rogue's finishing move or a super combo strike before ko.. this song is a masterpiece!! You are awesome Roscoe! Never change!!💜💜💜 Edit after watching: This is my most played song and for the very reason you mentioned! It reminds me to accept and embrace my truths as it's so easy to forget the 'other' perspective . What I love about this, is we get 3 sides of the story in one song and it feels complete. Same like you.. I liked the song the first time but i'm obsessed with it now. Every time I did watch it, it layered up and now has become my most go to song!! I think initially I wasn't ready to face some truths perhaps but when you are ready.. it becomes everything and more. Magic Shop is another song that didnt impact me much at first but is everything to me now. lol I love BTS!!! xo

Despite the heartbreaking reason that led to writing this song I will never get tired to admire their intelligence, the consideration they put in every word. T = To accept the reality of loss E = Experience the pain of the loss A = Adjust to the new environment without the lost person R = Reinvest in the new reality I mean how do you even come up with that? I will never get over it.

All art is subjective. So it moves people in different ways and we find the meaning in relation to what it causes us to feel. The one who creates, of course, fashions their art in relation to their experience. So draw from their music what you will. This song was written during a difficult and pivotal time with BTS. Finding out how this song was born was both heartbreaking and beautiful for me. You don't like spoilers so you won't ever hear it from me. The meaning of this song is explained in their docuseries, Break the Silence. 💜

Just gotta shout out Suga’s genius in writing/composing the initial melody as his feelings about breaking up the group and making everyone cry and being a big part of keeping them together. Then Namjoon and Hobi writing/performing such amazing parts with so much raw passion. Nothing like the sheer passion of the rapline. And they just had to add custom Dior outfits to really put a nail in Army nailing us down.

Hi Roscoe. This is why I love BTS.....they wear their hearts on their sleeves. Their rap is so honest and real unlike other rappers whose rap should be spelt with a c in front of it. Everything BTS does has meaning. They are awesome. 😘

😃Roscoe! Great reaction! Outro: Tear is a Suga song. He wrote the base of this song when the boys were thinking of disbanding. Tear is a song about BTS breaking up. You are correct that the guys wrote their lyrics, it hits different when you know they wrote them about the band breaking apart.😳 RM says tear as in cry, Suga says tear as in rip and Jhope says fear of course. Mind(Joonie), body(Hobi heart) and soul(Yoongi). Journey on... 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
@-wagswife-27852 жыл бұрын
I see Outro: Tear as the three stages of a breakup. Joon’s part is the argument that leads to the breakup, Yoongi’s part is the actual process of breaking up, and Hobie’s is the aftermath.

Learning to find the meaning in BTS songs is a gateway to searching for meaning in life. BTS is teaching their ARMY to think and feel on a deeper level. They know what they are doing.
@purine14002 жыл бұрын
bts write their lyrics in a way that can be based on a specific event but they extrapolate the emotions of the event from multiple areas. a lot of armys will tell you this song was written about bts’ potential disbandment, which is true. but the way the lyrics are written also emulate romantic breakups or even familial breakup. their lyrics are specific but simultaneously also open ended. that’s why i admire their writing so much.
@lyndaal57922 жыл бұрын
The emotions on Hobi's face always gets me 😭 and once you learn about the background of the song (which am sure you know by now with the hundreds of comments) you'll see the song in another light 😌 I don't listen to this song breaking down, I use it to remember the importance of people around me. I try to cherish everyone who cherishes me, so that I won't regret if one day something happens, cause I was honest with them and gave it all. Lol Roscoe I'll answer your question that you don't want us to answer, "it didn't happen to me yet". Even if a song is not my style, once I learn about the message they try to portray through it, the song has a place in my playlist already 😅. Namjoon is obsessed with Converse btw, so much that he wrote a song about it lol. Being "forced" to be part of the song along with the other members, Suga wrote his part "beautifully" . You may want to check it out 😉☺️ My comment is getting long and I don't know how many mistakes I made while writing 😅💜💜💜🇩🇿

I think I mentioned this performance on every video since you first said you were doing the rap line. I couldn't wait. I remember sitting in a theater with my husband watching a BTS movie and a clip of this song came on. I leaned close to him and pointed at Suga and said, his verse is so brutal. A few months later he asked me for a divorce right before our 25th anniversary. Then I felt Suga's, burn it so there is nothing left. (And you killed me with go for a drive, listen to this song and let it out, because I have and now I am again. Not driving, just crying.) Whether this song is about the band breaking up or a relationship ending, I think the feelings can be the same. My 25 year marriage to someone I felt I knew and shared the same dreams/path with can feel the same as 7 members finding out maybe they weren't walking the same path on the same dream. Another personal story for the family. I hope there are tissues and someone with a comfy shoulder on that couch. 💜

As far as I know, the 3 rappers always wrote their own verses, in the rap line's songs. And in lot of BTS OT7 songs too. You can really feel the way each of them express his feelings, totally diffférent vibes and espressivity , but they blend so well together ! It's a comon quote in the fandom to say that RM raps from his brain, Hobi raps from his heart, and Suga raps from his soul . Outro: tear is a perfect exemple withc mixed all together. Probably the most emotional song of the rap line, for the members and for Army when we think about what inspires Suga when he wrote the melody (and my favorite )

You’re right about Suga, he is the rawest one and doesn’t hold anything back. I highly recommend listening to his song The Last from Agust d first mixtape. He talks about his struggles with depression and social anxiety and the pain in is voice when he’s rapping is just so raw. This song has helped a lot of people with their own struggles and was really brave of him to put this out there as talking about mental health in Korea is not really acceptable.
