In each episode of DiResta (every other Wednesday), artist and master builder Jimmy DiResta (Dirty Money, Hammered, Against the Grain, Trash for Cash) lets us into his workshop, to look over his shoulder while he builds whatever strikes his fancy.
If you've watched a few DiResta videos you know that Jimmy is a master with a bandsaw. He's also really fast. Don't try to copy his moves if you're fond of your finger tips. But in this episode Jimmy slows things down (a bit) to let us see how he does it. Read all about it on MAKE: makezine.com/video/diresta-ban...

To people complaining about losing fingers etc in the bandsaw: NO you won't if you know what you're doing! People in some countries (yep, that's you Americans :p) have so many warning labels and fear of power tools that it's amazing how you ever get anything done in construction or carpentry! The tools doesn't have a mind of its own and they won't attack you when you turn around. The only thing that could happen is what You do! Skill comes with practice and in many cases safety guards add too much complexity and in fact causes more accidents just because of that. Sit down, relax and know that the guy you're watching knows his shit - and he's got all his fingers where they are supposed to be! Stop worrying about everything, plan the task ahead and if you can't control you brain enough to keep your fingers away from the blade, then don't do it. Don't judge others based on your skills. I also use the bandsaw in this fashion and I also cut veneer on the bandsaw and I have never been in any danger. Once I had a kickback on a large circular saw, but this was due to an over-engineered safety device... I removed it and now I'm never afraid, or worried, about kickbacks again. Use common sense and if you lack this then stick to do whatever you're comfortable with ;)

Just wanted to say thanks, i was inspired to make a simple cutout on the bandsaw of my daughters name, and i used a block of cut off 4x2 pine that was actually in my firewood pile. Its probably one of the most beautiful things i have made from wood if i do say so myself. My daughter has this in her room now and will hopefully have it for life. Thanks again Jimmy.

@MintV2
@MintV2 10 жыл бұрын
***** You're (half) right. According to Jimmy: "I severed my pinky through the bone. It's still there but 1/2" shorter" twitter.com/JimmyDiResta/status/318214766818635776
@sidgar1
@sidgar1 10 жыл бұрын
Doesn't say how he cut it off or with what tool. It'd be really difficult to imagine how it could happen on a bandsaw, since your index fingers and thumbs are closest to the blade and the pinky is almost always facing away farthest out. Whatever cut off his finger took out 1/2" after it was sewed back on, so it must've had a much thicker blade than a bandsaw.
@MintV2
@MintV2 10 жыл бұрын
sidgar1 Yeah, I wasn't suggesting it happened on a bandsaw. But you make a very good point.

Scroll saaws are much slower and don't handle thick material very well as the blade moves in an arc. Bandsaaw is the tool for this job although the scroll would allow cutting on the internal voids for "e"'s etc a little better maybe.
