AIR pump up wedge bags: amzn.to/4cYSyO4
12v fountain pumps(parts cleaner): amzn.to/4d7AXDW
RIGHT STUFF RTV gasket maker: amzn.to/4dXoCDg
Lucas Gear Oil gallon: amzn.to/47ndpt9
After Thoughts about the Video: Total cost for repairs was $421 and around 16hrs of missed KZbin watching. The transmission shifts butter smooth and I never had a single grind or pop out of gear.

This is the perfect example why more people need to learn to fix stuff themselves, it cost you a fraction of what the dealer wanted to charge and just a few hours of your time. Now you have a perfectly good ATV for a fraction of its value.

It's sad being a USA company/USA engineering, but the quality is nowhere near what I have in my old Yamaha or other Hondas that I've worked on. Definitely a lot of budget items. To me it was hilarious to see the same shift knob on a new machine that I used to see back in the '90s. Didn't change a thing.

I have a Polaris 800 UTV. Bought it brand new. Ran it for less than 50 hours before I changed the fluids. Maybe 30 mL of transmission oil. Thank goodness I did a service on it before anything broke which it definitely would have. Always, always check fluids on a new vehicle. Always change all fluids when you buy used. Lesson I’ve learned along the way.

Another tip for removing those style clutches, Teflon tape the bolt threads and use water, oil or grease to hydraulic the clutch off. Sometimes the push rod part can bend and mess up the crank threads. I can count how many snowmobile crankshafts I've re threaded from kids using the cheap tool.
@MAXIMUMWEDGE
@MAXIMUMWEDGE 5 күн бұрын
I know common sense is something of the past nowadays but I'd hope anyone attempting to repair their own machine would have the common sense to properly clean the parts afterwards if oil or grease was used! Also it's pretty difficult to fill the clutch bolt cavity with water or oil when the shaft is horizontal, sxs are a bit harder to tip on thier side compared to an snowmobile! Remember drugs are for recreational purposes only too much can harm your brain!!! Hahaha

The chinese certainly keep all the used bearings, and they sell them back to us in products. If you buy "machine skates" from china on the bay, the rainforest river, or the big rock candy mountain express, they're almost guaranteed to have old bearings full of dirt in them. I bought 2 sets of skates, both were used bearings, but one set was just awful and full of crud, and the other set looked like they might've actually washed the old grease out and put some new grease in. I suppose it doesn't matter for skates for moving heavy stuff that you're pushing by hand (so very slowly), but wow, talk about being cheap!

I loved the way Ginger had her head out the window yelling to everyone how excited she was. To be fair to the stealership, I’m guessing they gave a price to replace the whole transmission + labor because without opening it up how can they know how bad it’s going to be? Case in point, at the beginning of this year we purchased a 2018 (well out of warranty) Iveco motor home with only 40,000 km on the clock. It turned out that it had a noisy diff. I knew this was a problem across Europe on some of these vehicles as they were set up wrong from the factory and a lot were replaced. We got it for such a good price that we purchased it anyway with the view to fixing it myself however, I wrote to Iveco Australia and asked if they would help out as it was a known problem. To my great surprise they agreed to fix it at their cost as a matter of good will. It took 5 months and three attempts to get it right and on the third try they had to wait for a replacement crown wheel and pinion to come from Italy. Every bearing, seal and gear in the diff has been replaced and it’s as quiet as a mouse but I can’t imagine what it cost Iveco in parts and labour but I’ll bet it was a hell of a lot more than they were expecting. Cheers, Stuart 🇦🇺
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 5 күн бұрын
You're right they wouldn't have opened it up. Virtually all shops now are just component replacers here in the US. The cost of Labor is just so high, it wouldn't make any sense. However, my cost on a full transmission is about $2,500 USD. Their cost has to be substantially less. Let's just say $2,000 to be fair. That's still $3,000 in labor for about 5 hours of work of uninstall/install. That's because dealerships also like to mark up the cost of parts; usually 50 to 100%.

I think shop rate is pushing over $200 an hour now. That's why they would never actually service parts like this or any parts. Like virtually every type of shop these days they just swap the entire assembly. Just wait until the day of every tire you need to replace is part rim and the brake assembly etc. So instead of new tires costing you $600-1,000 They now cost you $3000-5000 for a set.

I rebiult the Transmission on a Trailblazer 250 and the Customer abut had a heart attack. Polair junk wanted 250.00 for 1 gear, 300.00 for another gear then 190.00 for a shift fork 290.00 for the drive chain....absolutly obsurd! I personally hate Polaris and would never ever own one. They're biult so chinsy and cheap but want top dollar. Every Polaris ATV i ever had in my shop has had blwn out front ball joints, blown out Control ar/A Armbushings, blowing out steering stem bushings, their fenders are razor sharp, they electrical systems are just strange and of course they over complicate things. Make no sense the way they do it.

Absolutely! The prices are insane. The problem is honestly it's made/ engineered in the USA. This makes everything five times more expensive than just doing it overseas like Honda, Yamaha, etc. The engineering in those machines is far superior. I was expecting this 2012 Polaris to be way more advanced than my 2004 Yamaha but it fails in comparison. All the plastics are chintzy, The shift knob is hilarious because I used to use that exact one on my '90s 250 trailblazer. This thing has been stored in a garage/ with a custom fit cover its whole life and all the decals are checked, cracked or missing. The last time I looked up the sales figures though Polaris sells at least double what everybody else does in the US.

Smart move using the gear oil. That polaris oil (which im almost certain is just royal purple) is trash. Way too thin given the application...this tiny transmission gets pretty hot during operation. I used gear oil in my rzr and immediately noticed a huge improvement in the ease of shifting in and out of all gears. I used royal purple in a car manual transmission before, the exact viscosity the manufacturer called for. Lost reverse a week later, completely destroyed the engagement dog teeth....never again with any royal purple product. They may have been good at one time, but ive heard they are nothing like what they used to be. Probably the cheapest grade mineral oil with purple dye added.

They really try to trap you in with "House oils". It's in their best interest to make machines last only 6-10 years before it's sold onto the new 2nd hand owners. Those owners don't matter in the slightest as the money they can make is off parts.

What was your total cost vehicle, parts, etc ?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 күн бұрын
It's not a straightforward answer on this because it was a package deal with snow tracks. Snow tracks sell new for around $7000. Used I could likely get $4500-5000 around here, so keep that in mind. As a package machine and tracks, I paid 5500. Parts for the repair were $421. So I'm in 6000. If you subtract the tracks resale(4500) I'm in about $1500.

It’s always more fun to work on and build your project, instead of buying something that’s all put together and perfect. The labour involved to get to the park or parts that are broken in some cases is more than the actual part needed. So it failed due to user error or was there a leak??

The main question has to be, why was it low on transmission oil?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 күн бұрын
There was very minimal signs of oil leaking. There was a little though. Overall it was about 3/4 of a quart low which could have happened slowly over the last 10 years. Ultimately, that's what caused the failure in my mind. However, doing a little research, the bearings going out are very common on these machines, even with full oil. That's why I made it a priority to put in higher end bearings.

perhaps because I'm a bit of a wrench nerd hybrid, today I twice heard "scientific" used when they mean "precise". In this video and another, something along the lines of "... I'm sure there's a more scientific way of doing this ..." when they were measuring something. That's precision, not science. In fact, there is lots of science, in fact lots of very very good science, that is extremely imprecise. Take my word for it .. or don't, whatever. My pedanticism aside, great video. Always love everything this guy publishes.

So,if there was only 6ozs of oil in the tranny,and there wasn't any major leaks ,that means someone either didn't fill it full feom the factory,or didn't put the appropriate 44 ozs in during an oil and fluids change... 😠
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 3 сағат бұрын
There was probably 15oz vs the 44oz. There only minor signs of oil on the case. Definitely not 30oz worth and most looked like it had come from the engine. I would suspect an under fill at the factory as it doesn't look like the nut to check fluid had ever been removed. Someone else commented that they checked this oil in their new machine at 50miles and it was super low as well. They caught it in time.
