Codemasters has always been good at making wheel and controller feel good. Is DiRT Rally 2 the same? Well let's find out on one of the most beautiful stages I've ever seen.

@BMO exactly, sensivity in this game means How direct you want it to steer. I obviously put it at the max setting and if you check my last video, that's how I play right now!

its very good overall with a controller. Its not a full out simulator, but it's a lot more realistic than most older CMR games, so a wheel starts to make a lot of sense now

I just sat #10 Global fastest time trial on Misaflores (Group A) using zero assist, 1st person cam, and sequential gear shift, on a PS4 controller, using the right analog stick as the gearstick . So I guess you can play competitively with controller :p

​@@VD-zn1ed Well, i made a lot of #2's and #3's in the original Dirt Rally, using wheels and pedals, but i sold it on ebay when i quit playing. Now i bought Dirt rally 2 on PS4, just for fun and was surprised by the fact, that learning to play with a console controller was only a matter of time. I use the Xbox elite controller, would really love a wheel but just can’t get the hang of them, but I’m doing ok using a controller with this game, I find it easier than the first Dirt Rally but a little more difficult than Dirt 4. Worth a buy 👍🏼

For those who are struggling learning with a wheel, especially with this game, try setting the rotation to somewhere between 270-320 degrees, it will make a huge difference to handling and responsiveness and you'll get used to it in no time and soon you will be chucking the car sideways into corners with ease! At least this is what I discovered shortly after changing it from a much bigger rotation that I was struggling badly with.

It got harder once I started driving cars like the bmw m1, but you get the hang of it after a while. It's surprisingly good with a controller, much better than project cars and wrc7.

The problem with the controller is you don't have quite as much control over the steering and throttle input which is the key to going fast. I mean of course taking a 4 corner at 70 is possible but you can do it much faster than that.

I personally prefer boonet mode on these type of games.... the inside the cabin views have to much junk in the way, it feels more cramped (like you said) than in an actual car.

Even on controller I race of the bonnet cam on this game, get the nose into the apex and let physics worry about what the back of the car is doing

The best realistic game to play with a controller is Richard burns, because you can adjust the sensitivity and linearity relatively with car speed (it has a graph showing the relation). So when the car goes fast, the sensitivity is reduced, when the car goes slow the sensitivity is much higher giving total control. Dirt 1 & 2 do not have this option, sadly. I play almost perfectly Richard burns with my ds4, but in Dirt rally 1/2 i can't get fast enough. So dirt rally 1/2 are playable with controllers but when it comes to competitive gaming you'll never get there.

Yeah, they weren't undriveable but definitely a pain the ass. You could make it work by tuning the car but even then they weren't much fun. I played about 300 hours of DR1 on an Xbox One controller but 99% of that time was spent in AWD cars.

Brother Valen I did manage to do Finland in the Escort mk2 with a controller with almost default setup. Had to restart countless times though. Way easier to handle rwd cars with a wheel - my favourite car is still the M3 👍

I recently tried forcing myself to get comfortable on controller with the Lancia Stratos in dr1 and admittedly it's impossible but I made my friends verse me on d4 in that car and it improved my times and speed so much I couldn't believe it.

I tried this game with controller(obviously very late) and I can't even make it past the first corner without crashing, then when I played dirt 4 for the first time after. I was driving through it like a dream come true. I'm i think its horrible with controller but hey, who cares what I think? 🙃 FYi: I did try dirt rally 2.0 with controller for a week and no progress was made 😩

The OG DiRT Rally was next to impossible to drive consistently with a controller. Finding the right settings was hard enough, but then they had to be changed for each vehicle!

It was playable but it was just way too hard to be consistent yes, as soon as you got to s bends, throwing your car to the right then having to throw it to the left was impossible I’d near enough always spin when throwing the car back the other way

Very bad desicion from this Developers.... This cant be much work to implementing 2 different handling modes. Playing Dirt 2.0 since 3 Days now and yes it can be fun, but compared with Dirt 4 it doesnt have a chance. Dirt 4 >>> Dirt 2.0

They're two different series. DiRT Rally 1 and 2 are simulators, DiRT 1, 2, 3 etc. are for casual play aswell.

The Dirt Rally series is purely meant to be a rally simulator so theres no place for arcade style handling modes. Theyll stick made they're regular Dirt series for casual players

on controller i cant drive rear wheel drive cars or modern 4wd cars. its so hard not to mash the gas which is crucial with rear wheel drive cars. wheels definetely improve the overall experience with all cars. then get yourself a handbrake

What kind of controller did you use for this one? I've heard that turning on vibration/rumble/dualshock improves your ability to read the road and react to it. Do you think this is true? I've been considering upgrading from my logitech to an Xbox one controller, but they are expensive.

Turn up your steering sensitivity to 75-80, and then set the steering linearity to 7ish (this will depend on how you feel after driving the car). As well as adjusting the deadzone to personal preference.

Why did you use bonnet cam with the wheel, and chase cam with controller? Chase cam is generally easier for most people, that could explain some of your improved times w/controller.

Chase cam with wheel is very unnatural for some people. Bonnet cam is just as if not more viable than chase cam

Chase cam is easier for slower people. No chance is it better at all. I'm still undecided about Cockpit vs Bonnet cam but I feel I have a better feel for the weight of the car in Cockpit, it feels a bit floaty in Bonnet cam. On really fast stages like in Spain sometimes Bonnet is slightly advantageous cuz you have more spatial awareness at white knuckle speed. In Career I only use cockpit for immersion but in the challenges or multiplayer I sometimes use bonnet in the rain for a visibility advantage. Chase cam is trash.

I’ve never owned a wheel so I play every game on a controller, I prefer RWD cars in most games because you have to learn to drive the car before you can be fast. I feel like RWD cars are more immersive

It´s all about being careful. You can´t go flatout or full throttle in a corner, because you will spin. Same thing with releasing the throttle in corners totally. You will spin in most cases. Apply a little bit brake, especially when you downshift when entering a corner. It will keep the traction to the rear. Attacking a corner in higher gear might be helpful, but it´s a little bit tricky if you drive a turbocharged one (turbo lag) like in a Sierra RS500. Start with a Opel Kadett. Once you master it, try the Escort MK2 or Opel Manta. Then you can aim higher, like Alpine A110, Lancia Stratos and Lancia 037

I... I can not get past the Lancia, first hand full of stages I'm pretty sure, with a controller. It's honestly completely unplayable for me. Car keept darting left and right with tiny input on any combination of settings, acceleration and breaking are dramatically exaggerated. The moment you take your foot off the gas your speed falls extremely compared to GT:sport for instance. And none of this happens in rallycross. I do t have a clue what they were thinking. After playing GT:sport (which I also find inconsistent) other racing games are sloppy feeling. Which makes me really sad, racing games are and always will be my absolute favorite.

If you know what you are doing it should be ok. I change beetween chase cam and cocpitcam depending on stage and car. Fwd cars arent good on chase cam, only r2 peugeot is better and no kit cars yet so. Powerfull rwd cars are a challenge on chase cam, like Mk2 Escort. 4Wd cars are awesome on chase cam. Impreza sliding everywhere d. Lancer is better. Havent driven faster 4wd cars yet. I play without assists Tarmac handling may be more suited for cocpit overrall but ok either way. Definetly huge upgrade from Dirt 4. And i mostly enjoy Project cars (chase cam)or Gt sport (cocpit)handling, mind that i play others than Gt sport on Xbox controller.

I played DiRT 4 all the time since it came out but when I played this it felt completely different and was awful to drive. I think it cones down to skill and habits (I've heard that DiRT 4 is way easier than DiRT Rally and 2.0)

its still pretty shitty on controller, that changes significantly if you choose seuqnetial manual and use gears, set your gear stick to the right thumb stick to shift up and down.. go from there, you can't learn proper rally techniques in the game without gearing
