Car enthusiasts say it all the time its a rather famous quote that i don't think anyone knows the source of. ( Its often more fun to drive a slow car fast than one that's meant to be fast. ) The original quote was in reference to cars like Mazda Miata's. where you can be squealing the tires around corners at WOT with a smile of your face not having to go deadly speeds in order to hit that limit. The same thing definitely applies to dirt bikes. Bombing around on a 110 with your buddies will put a bigger smile on your face than trying to push the limits of a 250. pushing the limits of a 250-450 takes actual work and focus. you can max out a 110 while laughing your ass off halfway distracted and intoxicated lol. not that im advising it.

I've always felt that the mini manufacturers are really missing out on the off-road market by not offering enduro models below the 125 2T class. KTM did offer an XC version years ago, but if I recall, it really wasn't that much different from the 85 and 105 SX minis. Based on the recent boom of single track, hard enduro and hare scramble popularity, I'd like to see them give the same treatment and R&D to a mini version as they do the bigger bikes: lower gearing, suspension, larger tank, kickstand, maybe even a different head and a flywheel weight. It could even be a really cool project to promote via the Gas Gas brand.

More power that's wasted by how inefficient two strokes are. Might make more power on paper but that means nothing. On a track 4 strokes will eat 2 strokes. 85 is geared much shorter that also helps with acceleration. Its like the people who claim 250 2ts will out run a 450.

I am older now. I bought a 2022 YZ 85 as I wanted to touch the ground. I wanted something less than 200 pounds as I weigh only 150, 5’7”. That is perfect for me. It rips. My friend has a street trail Suzuki 450 and the 85 wins like he is standing still Until around 60 mph. The YZ 85 similar power to weight as YZ 125. I love 2 strokes. The smell and light weight. I think the 85 occasionally seems faster because it’s peak power is at a much lower rpm. The new 250s are making all their power at the tippy top. Meanwhile KTMs race 2 strokes make all their power a good 2 or 3 thousand below redline. So it’s easier for the 85 to see peak hp on the trails. But on a track or straight line there’s no comparison

If we’re talking about top speed, it would make sense that the 250 is slower than the 85. Those 250Fs are all geared short as hell for that incredible low end grunt. Edit: I also totally agree with your assessment of how a 250 feels. I ride a 2015 YZ250F on the street pretty often and at half throttle in 5th my buddy can keep up pretty well on his 85. And I don’t like beating on bikes too much, but once you get on it you realize just how much room you have left until you hit the limiter. Definitely an advantage that 4-strokes have over 2-strokes if you ask me...
