Refrigerator Door Won’t Stay Closed? TRY THIS!

If your refrigerator door won’t stay closed, the fix may be a lot easier and less expensive than you think!
Of course, we’re assuming the problem with the door not closing is NOT related to so many items in your refrigerator that the door CAN’T close! And, the same goes for those “lurkers” that stand in front of the refrigerator for extended times with the door open!
Another potential problem is the door gasket has come out of its groove or is misshapen so that it doesn’t allow the door to close properly. If that is the case, you’ll need to clean out the groove and press the gasket back in all the way around the perimeter of the door. If the gasket is damaged, it can be removed and replaced, although that repair is not the subject of this episode.
ONE OTHER POTENTIAL PROBLEM - it may be that the front two adjuster legs on your refrigerator are set incorrectly, and your unit is leaning forward enough to cause the doors not to close easily or stay closed.
However, if your door, like ours, simply has gotten “lazy” over the years, and won’t close the last little bit on its own, then it’s HIGHLY likely the fix is quite easy and inexpensive.
In this episode, Dirtfarmer Jay shows you how to remove the door, replace a couple of small (but very important) parts, called door closer cams, and then reinstall the door. The parts are under $25 (including shipping), and can be ordered from www.searspartsdirect.com or www.ereplacementparts.com. While our refrigerator is a Kenmore® brand (made by Whirlpool®), this same part is used for several brands and models, so it’s a good chance this part may work for your situation.
This pair of parts are located around the lower door hinge pin. Our repair took under 20 minutes and required a ⅚” or 8mm nut driver or box end wrench, as well as a small straight screwdriver to pry out the worn part. The part number for the top half of the door cam set is WP2182179. The part number for the bottom half of the door cam set is WPW10329686.
Here are a couple of links to ereplacementparts.com - one of our favorite appliance and tools repair parts sources:
For the top cam: www.ereplaceme...
For the bottom cam: www.ereplaceme...
These cams serve to have the door close in position so that the door gaskets seal and cold air is contained properly in the refrigerator compartment. We got 16 years of service from the door cams, so this inexpensive repair, using only a little time and a few tools, will probably serve us until it’s time to replace the whole refrigerator.
Sure, you can call an appliance repair service to fix your refrigerator door, but with your new-found expertise and a good parts source, you can JUST DO IT YOURSELF!

My friend just bought a new fridge because of the door popping open. Sje gave me the "defective" fridge as it was still a major upgrade for me. I just pulled the door off to find the CAM is completely warped, probably why it never worked right for her. THANK YOU!

Fantastic video if you are looking for the solution. I went to whirlpool site to verify the parts for my model which were the same as yours in this video. My whirlpool model is 20 years old and our refrigerator door was not closing tightly and as firmly as it used to anymore. Ordered the parts locally from an appliance parts store which had them ready for pickup in an hour for $9.00. Expected an easy job like in your video. After taking the door off and cleaning underneath whatever was on there after 20 years, I noticed the piece in the door had already worn all the way down and the shaft that went into to the door was stuck in there. It was a battle with the long nose pliers to pull out pieces of it so that I could fit the new part. Once that was accomplished, everything went back together quickly and it works like brand new again! I can't thank you enough for this video.

The door hasn’t stayed closed in months! So now my fridge closes tight, I was really hoping that was why it doesn’t stay cold, but unfortunately it’s still not getting cold inside. Hi Jay, thanks for posting a Really Easy To Follow & A Great Video To Boot. Here's the issue in our house. My wife feels the need to put an extra 50 lbs of food into the fridge. (Same With Our Freezer)... I had to ask her to Please go to wherever it was she was going to so I could look at it... After watching your video, and just before I ordered the Hinge-Cams, I took one more look into the fridge. She buys those 1/2 gallon bottles of Coffee Creamer, but this time she had the bottle partially in front of the Gallon of Milk. I moved it over & Wa-La, the door closed correctly. Because she uses the Washing Machine Door to Hang Wet/Damp cloths on while she loads the Dryer, she's damaged the Washing Machine Door Internally, so we need a new Washer Door. & darn if they don't cost more than a new Washing Machine. Last after arguing with her about not jamming the freezer with way too much food, after 7 years, the Freezer-Door Water-Dispenser works again, as does the Automatic Ice Maker... I love my wife, there is no doubt, but her mother had to keep the house full of food because her father would take off for a week or so, every now & then. That's where she gets the ''Jam-Packing the Refrigerator'' from... Thanks again for the great video my friend... Dan

Dan, good to hear from you. Ah, the joys (and challenges) of marriage! It sounds like you've gotten your diplomacy skills sharpened over the years! Glad to be of help on the refrigerator issue - in your case, the fix was even simpler than replacing the cams...

I personally experienced that very same issue with the door not tightly shutting, Thanks to your tutorial I rapidly went to my fridge and removed all items near the front edge of the shelves that might of looked like it wouldn’t be the cause and guess what, that was the reason…. IT NOW SHUTS AS TIGHT AS IT DID WHEN I FIRST PURCHASED IT…, Thanks a trillion…

Thank you Jay. Did as you say and it works like a charm. The old parts were worn worst than the ones you had on your fridge. The doors looked out alignment. Now with the new parts they line up perfectly and close with no effort like it did when it was new. One suggestion I'd make to people is to make sure you got the right tool for the job like a rachet wrench or a powered form would be even better. Also when you put the door back on after replacing the parts put the lower part of the door on first because that is trickier to do because it's hard to see where the door lines up with the hole do that first and then adjust it to make the new parts are interlocking once that is done lining up with the top will be won't be an issue. Thanks again Jay!

Thanks a lot for your video and instructions. This gave me the confidence to try to fix it. I ordered the parts for my 25 yr-old fridge, taking out the door was easy, but the new parts for the door had a problem, the mounting hole is few millimetres off, so the door will not fit into the protruding rod of the fridge, it took me half an hour to work out a solution, which was to drill a larger mounting hole on the replacement part, so it could be adjusted to fit to the door and align with the hole. Eventually, it worked, it took 90 minutes instead of 15 minutes. As usual, sometimes things are not that straightforward, need to allow extra time and work out a solution on the spot. ( I am outside USA, the parts are a little bit more expensive, but it is still cheaper than calling a technician to fix it).

Be warned: If you have a Kitchen Aid model, the lower hinge cam MIGHT be riveted to the steel hinge! I just changed mine after 17 years and the cams were so worn down they were flat. Everything was going great, the cam ON the door came out easy and was replaced as easy as the video here. Then I came upon the hinge cam on the refrigerator and found it was riveted to the cam with a metal rivet. WTH were they thinking!!!??? I had to remove the hinge itself from the refrigerator (removing a single screw from the lower grill to move it out of the way) then remove three screws to get the hinge out. Now I cut the cam off the hinge using a sharp knife, then used a Dremel with a metal grinding bit to remove the rivet top. Drilled out the rivet body from the hinge using a cordless drill, then jerry-rigged a screw and bolt that fit the cam. Everything works great now, but be careful- depending on your model, it MIGHT not be as easy as depicted here, but still very DIY!

Jim, we are revisiting all the comments that have been made on this edition. Thanks for watching our video and then taking time to share your insights. It is frustrating to have a product manufacturer not have serviceability in mind, instead installing components that actually lead to obsolescence prematurely. Your insights are valuable and we may do a future video that focuses on this repair. Thanks for being a part of our viewer family! Best, DFJ

You pointed me in the right direction. My door shares a hinge bracket with the freezer door above. Without a second refrigerator to keep the food, who wants to remove both doors? Laid on edge on the floor, a 2x4 came within 1/2" of the bottom of the door. A pack of playing cards amounts to a 1/2" shim adjustable in increments of 0.01". I opened the door, put the deck on the board, lifted the door, swung it closed, and let it down on the cards. That and the top hinge and the magnets held the door while I removed the bottom hinge. There was a thrust washer but no cams. The lubricant was sticky. Cleaning and lubing helped. I also used that to keep the door in place while I removed the freezer door to lube the top hinge. It wasn't worth the trouble because it was already slippery. I discovered something else. A professional recommends treating the hinge side of the gasket with vaseline because when the door is almost closed, it has to slide a little. Now the door closes like it used to close.
