Today on Dirt Lifestyle we are taking my son snow camping! Winter camping is not something I would recommend for just anyone. Overland style travel has it's own inherent risks and when it is snowy like this everything is taken up a notch! But with the right company, preparation and attitude this can be a great way to get out of the house and reflect on what is important.
On this trip I bring one of the most important people in my life... my son! I think it is in their (our children's) best interest to be exposed to the wonder and value of the great outdoors. My son/ kiddos fell in love camping this summer but I want to show Chris that sometimes you need to earn your fun. I want him to learn to be happy even when the conditions aren't perfect. Join me on my first real snow trip with this little guy and see how this adventure unfolds!
BTW if you aren't subscribed to Edward's channel you are missing out! This dude is extremely talented and I have zero doubt he will have an even bigger channel than mine one day.

@@DirtLifestyle Montana overlander here. Slush can suck for sure. Solid ice, I mean 1 inch hard solid ice is some deadly stuff. I almost went over on blue mountain near Missoula and its no joke, I had 1 tire over the edge. I am glad I wore my brown pants that day.

Did gokart racing with my dad from 4-15 with my dad and the most important lesson I/we got out of it, other than driving related, was the ability to deal with being out in bad weather. The track we went to was in a valley and seemed to make up its own weather. Racing in November in the rain At 8 years old while winning my local kart championship taught me to love bad weather. There’s no bad weather only bad clothing. Also racing in the rain is the most fun experience of my life.

So glad you guys are pushing your comfort zones. Remember, tire chains, winter tires and tire studs are your friends. When crossing those sketchy side slopes, hook up your vehicles with winch cable recovery straps etc making sure at least two vehicles stabilized to one crossing. It could save your life. As it gets later in season and avalanche danger is high plan accordingly. We had an avalanche take out a disco on route two west side of Stevens Pass. Everyone survived even though the disco took a few hundred foot scoot downslope. Get some fat wood and have everyone bring a little dry firewood in each vehicle. Get yourselves a good fire reflecting shield or even a collapsing wood stove. Your edits are getting really good brother.

LOVE winter camping! Great that you showed the good and the bad - like sitting under a tarp weighed down by wet snow or rain. Also good to remember that your feet will be inside snow and ice covered boots; very cold. I wear crampons around camp so I won’t fall when the snow around camp packs to ice! In remote areas, even paved roads become treacherous. But camping in a silent, snowy forest with no bugs - wonderful!

Nate the point you made about being in the snow reminds me when I used to go to the desert in California in my younger years. We would show up with very high winds, 6 foot tall fire blowing sideways wearing goggles drinking a beer, just happy not to be at home. Watching people leaving because they don't like the wind.So the point is make what you can out of the adventure & make some memories. Great shot of Edwards new truck almost going off the cliff. I bet he got his heart a pumping in that moment .

Oh man. That slide. Hey I’m a California guy and we wheel in the snow. That reminded me of a slide a took down a mountain trail for about 200 feet. Totally locked up with no steering. I just aimed the wheels toward the mountain and prayed. Over the edge was a 200 foot drop off. Had my pregnant wife and two friends in the XJ. Thank God it was on a straight section of trail and it leveled out and we came to a stop about 10 feet in front of a truck wanting to go up. I CRAWLED the rest of the way down in 4 lo. That got my adrenaline pumping. I don’t think my passengers knew how close that was. CHAINS. I’ll never go off-roading in the ice or snow without chains now. Learned my lesson.

Yep, we've never stopped Overlanding, even with the kids who are now 5, 4, and 2, but all of them have been camping and overlanding since they were a newborn (the oldest was camping @ 3 months). So it is a part of their lives. I will say for us, moving from a ground tent to a huge RTT was a game changer for overlanding with kids. All 5 of us sleep in the RTT.

It's easier to camp when it's below freezing, so that everything isn't just wet all the time so yeah, a lot more work when it's just around those temperatures you're having on that trip. But still a lot of good times can be had 👍 I'm not yet going on camping with my family, because our daughter is just below 3 years old and minus 20 celcius would mean a lot of extra work to prevent her having frost bites 😬 So we'll wait a bit. But I'm certainly looking forward going on the camping trips with my family. My wife haven't been into camping that much, but she'll learn 😅

That's the way to do it! If the trail doesn't fit, you fit the trail... Definitely need to have shovels and man power on this kind of road... Especially in that kind of weather. Looks like so much fun. I was on a trail last year and it got so narrow there was just no place to turn around anywhere. We had to get out the tools and make us a spot... I actually enjoyed it though.

It's all about the experiences Nate, my kid is 13 now and he remembers all the nonsensical things I dragged him out to do when he was little. I keep not one but two sets of tire chains in my Explorer. It's bone stock but when I have all four tires chained up I can pretty much run with anyone out in that slick stuff. I almost never use them but would not even consider going out in the Colorado mountains with having them for insurance. Nobody but truckers use them around here these days, the highway dept keeps the roads plowed....when I was a kid, tire chains were standard equipment around these parts.

First time I winter camped was in the back of my truck with a tarp draped over on a piece of plywood with a 1/2 inch foam pad and a tarp at -16°C (3°F) with a -15°C rated sleeping bag. Was wearing a Hoodie and sweatpants inside the sleeping bag but that was a very cold morning. Then I bought a rooftop tent, a cheap diesel heater and a CO detector.

I second that, I was hoping for a quick walk around the 40.

I need to know that song you used when you all were sitting around the campfire and did awesome cinematography with the rain. Pleeeease. You put wo much work into your edits and videos that part hit me right in the nostalgia. Good job on not just family time but Making memories that subconsciously last forever.
