Believe it or not there is still a Harbor Freight trailer in there somewhere!
In today's episode we add a bunch of wire to this Offroad trailer in hopes to get some basic lighting. I throw down a heavy coat of Walmart's finest orange spray paint and install a bunch of the house electrical! Next week we hit the road for the first time and hopefully button up whatever is left to make this trailer ready for "overlanding".

Thanks for watching guys! A few things to talk about here. I have much of the random electrical stuff in a Amazon shopping carts here... www.amazon.com/shop/dirtlifestylenate Second we have our fairleads in stock and ready to ship! I know many of you have been waiting for a restock... the next batch has arrived 🙌. And third... I regret saying anything about the success of Lite Brite. I didn't want this to be an invitation to pile on and trash talk them. When I do voice over I often shoot from the hip and for some reason this was on my mind lol. I thought this was funny so I kept it in but Kevin hit me up saying they are getting a bunch of nasty messages about my comments. I only want to spread positive vibes in this industry and I promise, it's all hugs and smiles when I see Kevin and Brittany. Hind sight is 20/20 and now I see that even though these comments felt playful and sincere they make me look like a clown 🤦‍♂️. Sorry folks! I try to learn from my mistakes everyday and this isn't the first time I was too dense to read the room lol.

Don't be too hard on yourself about Litebright. When I watched the video, I just figured you were making an innocent joke with no bad intentions. I think it's less of your fault for the comment and more the immaturity of some viewers to take your comment out of context. Keep up the great work man!

I also caught it as an innocent joke. Thank you for not just removing that part of the video, and explaining yourself. Would that more people would own the things they say, and apologize and change as they feel it’s necessary, not upon prescription of others. Have loved your trailer build! It’s got you my sub. Also really like your music choice, makes it easy to watch even when I need to be focused on other things.

not a standard style reverse lights... add rear facing flood lights as the reverse lights and chassis under-lights with proper color-coding ex. yellow in front of rear axle red behind rear axle. makes everything much easier to see when parking the trailer in the dark.

Hi Nate! Enjoying the build. I'm a retired truck driver and I can tell you legally the running lights on the sides of any vehicle must be red at the end. Any running lights facing rearward must also be red. Amber lights are not allowed in these positions. All it takes is one grumpy cop to mess up your trip. Keep building.

Pretty sure you need red for rear marker lights to be legal. Orange marks the front and red marks the rear. Also some backup lights would be a great addition to the trailer for towing off road and for using at camp

I'd like to recommend underglow reverse lights near the tires. I did that my 25' toy hauler and what a difference it makes backing a trailer at night. On a standard 7-way the center pin is for the reverse lights and is typically the yellow wire.

I did the same thing. I wanted to add separate turn signals from the brake lights down the side aswell. (Been t-boned at night with a trailer waiting on a light) right now I have rock lights for reverse and turn/brake in amber. What a world of difference it made.

Not sure if you found an answer in the previous comments, but I ran across this a couple month ago. One is called the Traditional (utility/cargo/etc) and the other is RV (travel trailer/camper). The notable difference is that we used to have standard stop/turn be yellow and green. On RV the stop/turn is red and brown. Reverse and Tail are yellow and green respectively. The pin locations function the same. So if you have an RV plug and junction box, but the trailer is standard utility trailer wiring, your yellow left turn wire would connect in the box to the red left turn from the pig tail as an example. Or you rewire the plug and move your trailer wires to match. It’s dumb, but it is what it is.

I used to work at a general mechanic shop and I have encountered three different 7 blade patterns for wiring trailers and for the truck side. Basically they are known as traditional, RV and heavy duty. In all fairness the heavy duty normally uses round pins and usually isn’t used for the seven blade connectors we usually see in utility and rv trailers but occasionally it is possible to have some whackado of a DIYer wire his stuff up in that patter for some reason or other. Typically speaking the RV and traditional patterns functions are wired to the same locations just with different colors but I have encountered this exact thing before. I have bought that exact junction box you did and i was pleased to note that it is actually labeled in the box as to which stud goes to which function. You should be able to just get away with redoing one side or the other in the box and just rearrange things as needed to make it work.

The plug is different because DOT started pushing reverse lights on trailers a few years back, i believe 2016 and up. They havent made it mandatory yet but its coming. Also, DOT had vehicle manufacturers add AUX B+ for future ABS and break away devices. I haven't seen any of those on the road yet but I assume it's coming like it has in the class 8 industry. The cool part is you can now run accessory reverse and scene lighting from your trailer plug.
@zapityzapzap
@zapityzapzap Жыл бұрын
Reverse has been optioned on pretty much all factory installed 7 way harnesses since the 90's though. For example, in most GM upfitter's guides it tells you wires you need to clip to perform different tasks such as split the tail lights from common bulb STT to ST and T in trucks were STT was used and even how to rewire backup on the 7 way to aux function (for the optional upfitter switches).

@@zapityzapzap yeah my 98 Durango is prewired with the reverse circuit. All 7 are ready to be used. Break away systems rely on the trailers battery as well which is required by the DOT for any trailer that has brakes. Don’t know what he’s talking about lol. I know a lot of trailers aren’t wired for reverse though. Mine are, but I’ve made them that way. Doesn’t seem like something DOT would care about though.

The 7 way not using what we see as the US color code is common (I believe it is a hold over from commercial 9 pin color codes) but is simply fixed by just swapping two terminal positions at the block (don't cut the nice molded plug off unless it's damaged).

Wish I saw this video sooner! I'm an RV Service Tech and I've personally seen 4 different ways manufactures wire up a 7-Way plug. Usually a standard Recreational Vehicle has a the same wiring code from manufacture to manufacture. Then you get into the Cargo trailers, flat decks, goose necks and most of them are a completely different wiring setup compared to a normal RV. I do see quite a bit people having their cords wired incorrectly which will certainly cause a headache haha. Just my .02!

Also your ability to admit that things didn't go as planned and you then you explain why and go about remedying the issue. I built myself a one of a kind 7 pin tester recently. Made it with super long wires so I can stand at the back of the trailer and test all the lights. I can also test the electric brake function. It was invaluable this past winter when I rewired my entire boat trailer. I'm also using reverse lights and aux power on my trailer which runs my rear camera

Looking at your trailer from the rear, one thing that I think might be a fairly easy mod, but which would provide a good amount of added flexibility in certain situations would be a receiver hitch so that you could install a cargo carrier on the back. I wouldn't go with a commercial design though... I would suggest you go with a custom design that utilized TWO receiver hitches (one near each side) instead of the single type design that you see with commercial ones... This way, it is not as critical if you load it too far on one side or the other...

I have found that the position in the 7 pin connector is the same, but it is just the colors for each function are different. The RV industry generally uses the colors just like the 7 pin pig tail you installed, and utility type trailers use the colors you are used to wiring up. Another thing found to get ahead of electrical gremlins, when I wire the required road lights, or any light on a trailer, I always run the ground back to the junction box, rather than rely on the body, or chassis for the ground path.

Two of the advantages of a 7 pin is 1, it offers Reverse lights. one of the pins becomes hot when you put your vehicle in reverse, I used this to wire up 2 floods to the rear of my trailer, which have become life savers pulling into camp late at night. And 2, one of the pins is always hot, so you can wire up any accessory lights to a switch, I've done this for a small light bar, so I can see when tying down at night.

We are always fixing wiring on trailers. Most are wired the standard way. Brown =tail lights Green = right turn Yellow = left turn Red = 12 volt source Blue = trailer brakes White = ground Black = backup lights. But every once in awhile I find a trailer that is totally different. Takes time to figure out the mess.

There is a difference between 7 spade RV trailer wiring and 7 pin commercial trailer wiring plugs. RV's use a SAE J2863 connector, while commercial trailers use a SAE J560 type connector. Any trailer requiring brakes needs to have a power connection to charge the breakaway battery. Breakaway batteries need to be installed on the trailer to power the brakes in case of separation from the tow vehicle. I'm a new subscriber to the channel, like what I've seen so far. Keep up the great content.

Hey Nate, you'll never regret getting an HVLP gun (or LVLP). Easy to use, faster, better quality finish and paint is cheaper in quarts or gallons than rattle cans. FWIW I've used the Finex 3000 by Graco for years, works great for the level we're after. It's a good quality, budget friendly spray gun. A cheap adjustable regulator at the gun is helpful. I set to 20-22psi DYNAMIC pressure and get respectable results with all types of finish. Thinning 10-20% by feel is fine too, don't get wrapped up in using timed flow cups. We're not after "Best Paint" car show awards.

I live your Channel! I have an extreme Isuzu SAS'ed Rodeo with Marlin Crawlers and when I built my rear bumper for it, I built it from a 4"x4" steel tube and frenched in the rear license plate in the lower 2/3 rds. Back up & hitch camera built into the upper lip of it. Even built in storage compartments in the bumper with lids on the top for tow straps and recovery gear. When I mounted the license plate on the Rodeos new bumper I built a frame with spring loaded hinges to mount it on, so that it would tilt down like the old 60's license plates for the gas tank filler neck. Behind that license plate frame I mounted a 1/2" thick sheet of delrin (plastic WallMart Cutting board) inset a little, so I could make all my trailer and rear winch wiring terminals on. This way if I have a trailer lighting issue I can flip down the license plate and check all the circuits. All labeled too! There is a 7 pin RV trailer and a 4 pin trailer plugs plus Anderrson plug built into the bumper as well. Too bad I can't post pictures of it here! I also have a reciever hitch mounted winch that can be plugged into the reciever hitch of the Rodeo or my little 1951 GMC pickup bed cargo trailer. (I originally built the little trailer when I was 16 using the bed of my Uncles old GMC Pickup he had rotting out behind his barn.) (I turned 71 last Sunday) I actually have several different winches mounted to reciever plates should I think I'm not going to need the big 12K one. (2.500, and 5K winches.cause you never know.) The old pickup bed trailer has gone through several iterations over the years. Now sporting Jeep fenders and 3500lb cap axles with the 6 on 5.5" bolt pattern to match my Rodeo and Toy 4 Runners wheel pattern. So I have two spare tires for either the Rodeo or the trailer. I put in a reciever tube for a front trailer tongue so I can run either a ball mount hitch or pintle pin hitch to pull it. Or even a winch! (a big AGM battery with 10 watt solar charging built in the trailer for extra power for camping lights and stuff. Plus is charged by the Rodeos 250 amp alternator when plugged in.... And it's rear bumper has a 2" reciever hitch built into it for running the reciever hitch winch or recovery ring on it depending on how crazy I want to get on the trails. All my winches are set up with Anderson Plugs so I can be plugged into the Rodeo or the trailer, or my Dodge tow rig or my car trailer. Or even on the front or rear of my Class A RV. (The Rodeo has a Ramsey 8K winch built into the front bumper) Ya never know! Gotta get the most bang for the buck. I am impressed by your rear bumper on this trailer with built in winch and stinger set up. Very nice and clean. And thumbs up on the Orange paint job. I like Orange! p.s. My other tear drop pop up camper trailer I made is built on an Isuzu Pup front chassis, so it has IFS suspension and remote control electric steering! Fun on the tight trails!

23 years in the trailer/RV industry. I could do an entire episode on trailer wiring, and I’m just on the other side of the state from you. I used to do write ups on Pirate years ago in the towing forum. Your first mistake, wiring for color. Never wire for color until your color is verified! You found out why. There is no “code”. There is one way something is typically wired, and the way another manufacturer chooses to do it. Function on certain pins usually stays the same. Color changes. I started out learning white/brown/yellow/green and connecting everything with Scotch locks 23 years ago. Now I’m installing complete lithium/solar/inverter set ups. I’d say I’ve picked up a thing or two.

7 flat pin RV- most utility and rv trailers. 7 pin round, commercial usually seen on big rig trailers. marker lights (all the lights around the top and sides of trailers) run ou there own switch not connected to headlights, signals and brakes separate wires in some cases

Great job Nate! The fact that there are different color codes for trailer wiring doesn’t shock me at all. I know how much of a pain wiring can be and you once one color code only to find out there is another. Looking forward to how you figure things out and incorporate solar too. Can’t wait to see it rolling down the road! Also congrats on the 44’ 3 car trailer!!

I made my 2 wire marker lights to also be turn signals by wiring the ground to the hot turn signal wire. It will then alternate with the turn signal when running lights are on. When the running lights are off they will work as turn signals also. Just like square body GM trucks.

I recently rewired all the lights on my car transporter trailer (in the UK) and added a new 7 pin connector. I used the 'standard' 7 pin wiring diagram available on the web, but I tested everything to make sure it all worked correctly before connecting things permanently, as I used soldered (sodered) joints & heat shrink tubing for all the joints. Didn't fancy having to do it all twice.

Working in electrical I usually throw color code to the wind when it is built by someone else (like your 7 pin). I find it much quicker to just ring the wires out and go from there.

Trailer wiring is one of the biggest controversies I have run into. I just learned the positions of where the various functions are and forget all about color coding. I have struggled in the past with different colours and find that a different colour was spliced into the harness. One of our old fleet maintenance managers wanted us to use a "custom" wiring scheme to prevent trailer theft. All it did was create hassles when 3rd party mechanics were trouble shooting or we had to rent a trailer with normal wiring. We learned that if a criminal has the balls to jack your trailer, he doesn't give a fuck about the lights.

It’s definitely incredible how KZbin can fund a persons living. I’m not sure how much money you make from KZbin and I’m sure you e got other sources and then obviously sponsors and such. But it just amazes me that people can do that. I’m so happy for you guys and glad your able to do it. I will continue to support and watch and like and do everything I can to help because the content you make is so badass to watch and I thank you for it all.

Hell yeah nate!!!!! Way to go on the car trailer purchase. When your still building up a business even an old beat up piece of equipment is a game changer, I know that feeling and have more than my fair share of starter gear and while it may not be super shiny and brand new that pride you feel using it for the first time makes the whole thing sweet. And yeah, the trailer wire color coding thing is weird. No idea how or why it happened but it's caught me out as well between the 5 trailers and couple trucks I have.

Hey man you should proud where your at. You are doing what you love and providing for your family. Your part of a 1% that does what they love. No boss, no job and no worries. Drive that trail as long as you can. If me watching your awesome shows helps you. I'll see you next Sunday. Have a great day. Ps. I -5 isn't for Ferraris . To many pot holes. Unless they fixed them all in 20 years

Nice. You mention a lot about night driving. Suggest, backup light to help go backwards in the dark. Could possibly use the brake red light, but a yellow or white light is better.

Nate! Look’n pretty sweet! Don’t be so hard on the old Harbor Freight trailer. I too, built a budget beast with an old HF trailer I found in someone’s back yard. Offered them a few bucks, and it was game on! Granted, it’s not near as beastly as yours, but none the less, works for me … for now! LOL! Wished I could post a pic of mine here so you could check it out. Maybe I’ll see you on the trail one of these days. Keep up the great work Brotha! 😎👍🏼

There's a bunch of different 7 pin trailer plugs here in Australia too, it's an absolute pain in the ass because every time you borrow or buy a new trailer you have to change it to match the vehicle. I've come across flat 7, small round and 2 different large round trailer plugs, plus there's also a flat 12 for trailers with extra accessories.
