One thing never talked about is actual ground clearance with a rider on it. I have a 21 850xt max and I was totally shocked by how low it is. I have the preload turned all the way up with the recommended 10psi in the tires and it still grinds over rocks that it shouldn't. I'm about 240 lbs and I have to pick lines very carefully in the rocky terrain we ride in.

Just recently sold my 2015 650 Max XT and absolutely loved it. Mine came with the storage box to fit in the void when the back seat was off. 99% of the time I kept it on the front rack. It is a great little storage box. Best ATV I have ever owned and sold it to one of my neighbors. It did get hot during the summer months on the left side but I just moved my leg out a little bit and it was fine. Only reason I sold it was because I bought a 2023 Defender Max Limited side by side.

If i was buying another atv it would be a max. They just make so much sense to be able to carry a passenger or take the seat off and ride solo and in my opinion look close to a single seat. Yes i know there is more weight and higher price but still better than a whole other machine.
@hammerheartdan63112 жыл бұрын
The reason why they produce a lot of heat is because they are extremely lean from factory to meet California emissions. A flash tune fixes that by adjusting the air/fuel ratio, at the same time, you can set the rad fan kick on temp (my outlander 650 never goes higher than 94°C). On top of that, you’ll gain performance since its no longer starving for more fuel and runs significantly cooler. Other benefits from a tune is that it will remove limiters, and reverse override if you wanted too. A cooler engine is a happier, more dependable engine 👍. Only downside to a tune is you lose a bit of fuel range but that’s a trade off I’ll take any day, and I just bring a jerry can with me anyways. With a tune, I can run all day in a hot summer day without taking a break, when before I would get “high temp” on the dash all the time and it would sometimes go into limp mode (overheated).

Good review and I can confirm it is a great machine. I am an owner of a 22' Outlander 650 XT(non-Max version). For the first warm season(I'm in Ottawa), it's done me well. Just over 54hrs/1100 kms so far. The 650 is an awesome engine for the riding I do (strictly trails hence buying the XT model). Also half the price on insurance comapred to the 850. I can say it does run on the hotter side during the hot summer months, riding in slow technical trails for an exxtended period of time. I've had a fuel pump fuse blow once, I believe, because of the excessive heat after a long slow riding trail. The saddle was very warm to sit on during that ride from the exhaust underneath. My understanding is the factory leans out the fuel mapping to pass emissions. I'll be getting a proper tune before the spring. I've upgraded the shocks to Stage 3 Elka's and that emmensly improved the riding and handling. It does come with a little tool kit but I've added quite a few more tools over the time I've owned it. Really do love the Terracross tires that came with it. Very capable in most conditions, even in the snow! Been out to Quebec for the first time this winter and they have great winter trails for ATV's/UTV's. So overall quite happy with it so far. Cheers!

I own the 850 Max XT myself. Your tool kits are up high left side rear compartment. Put the full aluminum skid. Does a great job. And she throws heat in the summer. But like you said it’s not unbearable just open those legs a little bit and catch a breeze. You’ll forget all about it. Added the heated grips , thumb warmer. bought mine in 2020. Covid couldn’t come at a better time in the woods mostly to myself. The wife and myself enjoy this quite a lot. Haul the beast around in a Enclosed aluminum trailer hauls my gear ,tools, clothes. Easy to move around single axle nice place to take a rest too on bad days. But the thought has come to mind. Side-by-side and a bigger trailer. Yes I’m going with another aluminum dual axles 20’. Not trying to jinx myself here never had a problem never change the belt. Got almost 2500 miles on it right now thinking about putting a new belt in before summer though I believe by the fall season she should be on the selling block. My 22 xtp850 came with a tool kit. They don't come with a panel for the 2up seat spot while the seat is off, but they make a nice link storage case that's cheap and goes in that spot perfectly. The clutch cover (and oil change process) is unnecessarily complicated for sure... it would be nice if Canam considered that for future models. There are shortcuts for both that are easier than removing panels as you mentioned though. Overall I love mine! Something to keep in mind, 850s and lower run regular fuel not premium like the 1000. It seems like guys that run premium complain more about hot spots and hard starts in the winter. I drove mine a lot during hot summer days and didn't notice any heat issues.

My opinion on this machine is that when 2 are on it the suspension is way too soft. Add spacers on the bottom of the 4 coils, that is a cheap fix with a great ride improvement that you won't regret. Also, the belt on the clutch can be changed without removing the footwell, all you need is a flex 1/4'' socket. It does come with a tool kit but nothing to replace the passenger seat when removed. This is a great bike overall but servicing it could be improved quite a bit.

I find the rear storage latch difficult to truly lock in. But, with the solo trail riding I'm planning on doing I simply filled it with the following "just in case" items, stuffing it full Hopefully I won't have to access these items at all. Push Rivet Removal Tool More "general" Tools Knife Tie-Wraps, Duct Tape, a couple of Rags Safety Wire TP & Hand Shovel Kitchen Trash Bags 1st Aid Kit Tire Plug Patch Kit Tow “snatch-em” Strap - Kinetic Energy Recovery Tow Rope Flashlight Battery Starter Jumper (In case the hand warmers get left on.) Tire Pressure Gauge Electric Tire Pump. (Not actually purchased yet.) Spare Fuses I've only had my 850 Outlander Max XT one month, so just have 210 break-in miles on it. When I mean break-in miles, It's been all county gravel roads that have quite steep hills and descents at various throttle positions and speeds. That's to load the engine, i.e. pressurize the cylinders to press the rings against the cylinder walls seating the rings. I've mostly been riding my machine over and over a five mile stretch. I'm pretty much done with that now and plan on more distance sight seeing touring rides. Another data point for those interested; I got 21 mpg doing that type of riding. I'm guessing it might get better as the engine breaks in and loosens up, plus riding less steep terrain.

I've seen videos of people trying to get over logs and things at slow speed with the Visco-4lok and it seems to struggle until the throttle is hammered down enough to get it to engage. I spent half and hour trying to diagnose and restart it to no-avail. I took it back to the dealer where it was found that the ignition fuse had blown ( little 5amp fuse). I took it out again the following week to continue mowing and after an hour the same thing happens. I pull the coverings off to get to the fuse box and once in I remove the fuse that had blown the week before to inspect it, it was fine. Just for *hits and giggles is pull the next fuse over which was a 5amp also and find it was blown. That fuse was for the fuel pump. Once I replaced that it fired right up and has been running since. Has anyone else encountered this type of issue on a machine that is pretty much brand new?????????

Yep mine died while hunting this fall on my 2022 650 and it was the fuse for the fuel pump...went to see dealer and he checked the parts book and he said there was a new redesigned fuel pump relay $22.00 for those ATVs so I installed it in fuse box in front and did over 1000km and no problems since....kept the old relay for spare

Does it have the air shocks and air compreser like the 1000

My 21 XT-P 1000 Max doesn’t have the air compressor. Not sure if the 1000 Limited has it

2018 Max Limited owner here. I believe Can Am discontinued the Air Suspension stuff in 2020. Only the max limited had it up to 2019 and just in the back, the front used standard shocks the same as the XT shown in this video. Starting 2020 they moved to QS3 all the way around in the Limited.

I had a 21 xt 1 up and gotta say I did not like the power steering I thought it was very numb in all 3 options .. The shocks are terrible in a bike priced that high and wished I had of known that at the time .. I beat the under body and frame to crap and bottomed out everywhere and I’m 205 pounds and I do not drive like a mad man … another thing that I did not like is that can am doesn’t extend the skid plate past the rear diff I don’t get that my frame was damaged pretty bad under the diff errrr .. anyway I traded it in for a 22 grizzly yes I know it doesn’t have the vtwin power but I find clutching way better and the power steering is the way it should be in my opinion .. and I can do oil and diffs in 30 min or less .. I wanted to like the outlander and it is a great bike but just not for me .. high maintenance atv .. great job as always and been watching you guys forever now biggest fan

Thanks for the kind words. Gotta be honest, the Grizzly is my favourite ATV, followed by the Outlander so if you're happy with your Grizz you got a good machine in my opinion.

I have a 2022 650 Max. Love the Atv but I don't like how ridiculously loud the whine is when driving around 45 -55Km/hr. I'm in the process of changing the one way bearing and belt in the hope it fixes this deafening machine. Totally unacceptable at this price point.

...ok some realize you dont always need 1000cc- so powervise no problem- top speed not much difference too- i have a problem with the price- here in europe its between 13.000 to 18.000 euros and this is ridiculous- btw if u can get an arctic cat 700 trv- its nearly as powerful- much cheaper and less heat ;-)
@dirttraxtv2 жыл бұрын
Price is always going to play a role in your choice. I think the Outlander rides and handles much better than the Cat and I like the engine in the Outlander more. That's not to say the Cat isn't decent, just my experience with these two machines.

For the USA you can get a Renegade 650 so they still have a 650 in their line up, just not in the outlander line.

@@dirttraxtv of course the rest of the world has had the renegade 650 as an option for several years now. Even the 450 6x6. America doesn’t seem to get as many machine or accessory choices some other countries. It’s all market driven though

Oh some think it has tons of power, not so, unless you drive tricycles! If your not afraid to pin it, by the Polaris 850, now there’s some power!! Also don’t leave the storage door open while it running for more than 4sec, or the exhaust burns a hole in it. Had it out with the manufacturer, they blew me off, even though I explained what a lousy design it was. Just under $50.00 for a new one.

great advice for riders that ride alone - take a strap, I think anyone who is at all mechanical should take a extra belt. Doing a review and not even doing the research to tell viewers if the passenger seat area comes with a rack insert - Wow, talk about winging it.
