I picture myself riding in the mountains, no noise, no engine heat in the cab. Able to hear nature all around us and carry a normal conversation with my passenger(s). Yep, put me on the list who would like one! Great review Mike! I haven't watched a lot of DTTV lately, in fact it's been a long while, but your review has brought me back for more! Looks like a great farm tool. I don't know if I'd trust them deep out in the backcountry yet, but it'd be nice to eliminate some fuel costs hauling feed and water around the pasture, bringing stuff in from the garden, tooling around to do fence repair, etc. It could stay in the shop overnight so it stays a bit warmer and charge off a welding receptacle. I might have to dig a little deeper into this. Thanks for the walkaround!

Your walk around demos are energetic, engaging and informative. Great work! There are a few points of curiosity for me with this vehicle. 1) What is the towing capacity and how is range affected under load, whether it be hauling cargo in the bed, towing or operating in low range for extended periods (such as traversing technical terrain, etc.)? 2) What does the vehicle weigh? 3) What is the manufacturer’s recommended max depth for fording streams/water? Thanks in advance!
@dirttraxtv
@dirttraxtv Жыл бұрын
Thanks Cale! Polaris' site is down at the moment but I'll get you these exact numbers soon. This unit does weigh 200 pounds more than a gas-powered Ranger similarly equipped and the max depth recommendations are actually laughable because nobody rides like this. However, it was noted that in the handbook ALL RANGERS shouldn't travel in water higher than the floorboards. Sounds nuts, right??!?! Polaris has advised it totally understands that circumstances exist where these travel into deep water and have taken appropriate measures to ensure the electrical system is protected so expectations can be the same as your gas engine. I have more information on this and will present it in the full review. Stay tuned!!

Love the review. 2 questions. What is the thing hanging down behind the drivers door? Was the 5 hour charge time for 240v or 120v? Also I think the drive switch is for 1x4, 2x4 and 4x4. Looks like it has "Turf Mode".

Very interesting idea, for up here in Canada thou I would like to see what kind of range that battery would have at -20 or colder. That high and low range for forward and reverse is a fabulous idea! My question is this.... is there a way to charge the machine while out on the trail if you were simply way to far away from your charging station? Would they use the same charging cable as a car?
@dirttraxtv
@dirttraxtv Жыл бұрын
You can charge with a 120 volt. The time is significantly longer though. If you got out so far that you ran out of charge and brought your truck out to charge it, you'd be better off towing it back to your 240v charging station. As for minus 20 temps, this will impact battery life reducing it by a bit more than 30 percent.

The charge plug on the Kinetic is j1772. This is a common plug for EVs. The Kinetic comes with a 120/240 charger. You may be able to connect it to a generator, but this can be hit or miss, depending if the generator has a bonded neutral wire (ground and neutral are electrically connected) and depending if the included charger requires a bonded neutral (Tesla chargers do).

We'll know soon, but generally electric drive trains are no more or less susceptible to water than gas. Gas vehicles also completely depend on electricity. But they are also dependent on air. It is trivial to make electric stuff waterproof. It is not trivial at all to make ICE things waterproof. Like, you literally can't. The engine must consume air.

@@theejmc3824 IMO this would not be a viable option for Polaris or 99% of all vehicle manufactures. I think EV technology is much too young at this stage and I expect it would be just as expensive to do this to an existing machine as buying a new one? Polaris and the like are businesses, it would take too much time and money to to re-furb existing machines. Maybe a 3rd party company could could look at this option (like the Tesla powered RS1), but still expensive.

@@dirttraxtv thanks for your quick replies. Yeah, water is my biggest issue as I hunt swamp like conditions (lot of skeeters and mud) and I tried rolling through @1'-1.5' of water but it splashed the controller and killed the unit immediately. Needless to say that I had to walk back in that night and come back and get her in the morning (which after I cleared the codes, she was good to go)! That's the biggest issue with the Intimidators, that and they still run on lead acid, as any splashes to the electronics will shut them down. Even though they're UTV's in every aspect the electric ones still posses a golf cart reaction to moisture.

Might be good if you’re on the ranch with it or putting around your property but not out on the trail because most of us like to throw more gas on and keep on going. And what about a camping trip I guess you could bring a generator if that would even work. Not practical for this time.

I wonder how much of a charge you could get out of a jackery power supply if you took one ☝🏼 with you out on the trail as a back up battery 🔋 or to try and charge it at least enough to get a back to a base camp ⛺️ so you could charge it back up off of your Ford F-150 lighting 🤩🤪
@toddshreve
@toddshreve Жыл бұрын
The largest Jackery model @ $3,599.00 has 2.16 kwh of storage. The Kinetic reviewed in this video has a capacity of 30 kwh. So, you could charge it about 7.2% or about 5.76 miles of range. However, the Jackery you are probably thinking of has a capacity of around .5 kwh, which would give you about 1.3 miles of range. Actual range values will be less due to inefficiencies of converting DC to AC and then back to DC again.

Can we get a real comparison with the electric to a gas on use on the ranch (how does it really compare towing, etc. I can read the stats but lets see it at use), how easy it is to set up a home charger or do we need home/ranch modifications, how fast it can charge with a 50amp, 30amp and the house outlet, does it require a different charger than an electric car some owners might have - say a Tesla? How much usage on an average day on the ranch. That will give some idea on the amount of electrical draw to recharge, i.e.e the daily cost comparison to gas. It may be better overall but if it raises the daily cost to operate on an already tight agriculture budget then I'd like to know that up front. Also an extended hunt/camp trip to show how long the charge lasts in the field, how easy it is to recharge it in the field with a generator. The problems encountered, if any, with deep water crossing and crawling. Does this get broken easier? How easy is it to tow out if it does break down, do the wheels lock up or can they freewheel? These may sound like dumb questions but no video is testing these things and other than quiet I'm not really seeing (on the videos) it is giving much difference. Great promo for Polaris but still doesn't really say anything I can read in a sales pamphlet.

Lots of good questions here and we've answered more than a few in the coverage we've done of this vehicle. Have a search on our channel to watch AJ's review as he used it all last season around his house. Also answered the question about water in another video we did. I try my best not to get agitated by stupid comments about our reviews just being promotions and I gotta add, if you aren't into electric vehicles in any capacity and you're just looking to discredit the technology, why even waste your time commenting? There's tons of other videos on our channel and this platform in general. We also addressed the battery life comment for work around the yard in another video. Range is 100 percent not going to be up to what a long-range rider expects and we don't BS it and neither does Polaris. I wouldn't take it on an extended hunt camp trip because battery life would get eaten up quickly. You'd be better off with a gas-powered UTV and even then you'd have to bring fuel in with you. Straight up, this vehicle is for use around a property, utility duties and for trail riding - exactly how Polaris promotes it and we agree. For our short-term use (one season) we did not experience any technical issues, but can't speak to long-term reliability. Same statement we make for every machine we test. If you're expecting to log 300 miles a day in your side-x-side, this ain't your machine. That said, if you're logging 300 miles a day, why would you buy a Ranger in the first place?!?!?

@@ve3xtr Yeah, the battery technology in these Kinetics is very different than the tech in the EV. This machine actually has an insulator wrapping the battery that turns on and keeps it warm in freezing cold temperatures.
