Suffering a poor idle or generally rough running? EML on? reading code P0106/7/8?? This indicates a problem with MAP sensor (Manifold Absolute Pressure). All cars suffer from getting the MAP sensor dirty to a greater or lesser extent (especially diesel) and this causes inaccurate reading which leads to poor fuelling and poor running. MAP sensors can be pricey so always worth giving them a clean first, see if that cures the problem. It'll take less than half an hour and cost virtually nothing.

Some people refer to the MAP sensor as a "boost sensor". In this instance a boost sensor is a MAP sensor. The only difference is that on a forced induction engine, the MAP (boost) sensor needs to be able to read the amount of boost so will need at least a 2bar range. On a normally asperated engine the MAP only needs a 1bar range, since it never needs to measure anything higher than atmospheric (barometric) pressure. HTH.

Generally what sensors should be cleaned periodically? I’m a “back yard” mechanic and turned up my sister’s Ford Taurus and I think there were three I cleaned and it made a big difference. An air idle, the map which had some other sensor incorporated and the third might not have been a sensor but managed the vacuum. I would love to know if it made sense with my Saab or my wife’s 06 Lexus sc430. That’s three different engine strategies, Ford - Saab - Lexus. (I also have a Ford truck)

the one that manage the vacuum you said was the MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure sensor) the one with a pin with ball at the edge is tha MAF sensor (mass air flow) the one measuring the flow of air, the're link together to control fuel distribution accordingly along with the oxygen sensor at the exhaust pipe

I bought a little skoda less then a year ago the engine management and light always on and off appears where all the necessary of oil,water,break liquids at the correct levels are one day both engine warning lights can't remember now CRB something like that and warning sign came on than suddenly the engine stopped than I called AA recovery service the mechanic came and checked it out he told me that it's a Map sensor problem and needs to be changed , yes this You tube helps people who are on low budgets but some people like me have no facilities at all.No private garage to store the car so even for a basic reason I take it to the garages , yes had to take skoda to a local garage and they changed the map sensor but the problem is that engine warning sign is still coming on.any recommendation please Not being cynical but I have been unemployed since corona virus pandemic began .

i do recommend using an electrical cleaner or actual MAP sensor cleaner as the equipment is very delicate and needs to be left with no residue. break cleaner or Carb cleaner is a bit risky. (good video though mate and happens to be on the same engine as mine)

The REALLY important bit is "leaves no residue". Other than that, it really doesn't matter too much what you use - no pure solvent mixes are going to damage the rare-earth metal and ceramic s of the MAF as long as you don't touch them.

I've only ever been to Detroit on business (3 times), but we are planning a trip to NY with friends for a 50th birthday in 2 years. Hey that’s cool, the university of Cincinnati is huge with over 40k students. It’s where I went to school. Thankfully NYC is not the US but it’s worth a trip to see once. Been there a few (I drove it a few time too, over 9 hour drive, my son went to StJohns U.) times, it is an amazing place for food. If you saw Sandusky you saw America. I’ve traveled a lot and haven’t seen 10%. Two favorite places, Savanna, GA and Bisbee, AZ. Never been to England but it’s number 1 on our list. The closest I’ve come is Prague, the pub across from our hotel was owned by a British ex-pat. The only place that served more than one beer. We ended up there every night for 10 days, he assured me it was as close to a British pub as we’d find outside of the UK. It was our favorite part of our day, to get pissed and talk world politics with a Brit.

This is more commonly found in boosted engines. However, some Honda’s and other makes did include map sensors as opposed to maf sensors for a number of years. A faulty MAF or MAP sensor will cause rough/uneven idling, poor engine response, acceleration, fuel economy, and trouble starting up.

Different manufacturers have different ingredients for their brake cleaner/throttle cleaner. For example, a cheap china brand throttle cleaner contains methylene chloride that are known to cause severe chemical attack on many type of plastics. However, other factor such as temperature, concentration and exposure time also plays a role on how the chemical will react with the plastic parts. I think using brake cleaner to clean MAP sensor can damage the sensor, but since nobody cleans their MAP sensor everyday, it would probably be a relatively safe method. But the risk is always there and you never know when will you get unlucky.

@@CycloneCyd I don't know the actual ingredients that are harmful, but everywhere I read, people tell about discolored, dull or even melted plastic from Brake or Carb cleaner. @CycloneCyd Жыл бұрын
You don't say what car you have or it's age, but if you're doing your own maintence I'm guessing it's not too new. With a P0101 code, I'd be looking for a vacuum leak. That could be any leak into the induction system after the MAF, so check everything for possible splits. You may have more than one leak, Small vacuum hoses can be difficult to check and so you might be better off simply replacing all the small vac hoses with silicone tube s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DDG1dYT . Larger intake pipes (after the MAF) made of plastic rather than rubber will defo be suspect (see my Saab 9-3 cobra video for an example). Have you tried cleaning the MAF? WD40 contact cleaner is good. Brake cleaner is fine too. Also unplug and replug all connectors to wipe contacts.

Nice that he engine is now running better and there is also not that much of diesel smell when the engine is started. I measure the resistance on the old glow plugs, there was one that had around 200 ohm and one was about 24 ohm. The rest two glow plugs had a resistance around 1 ohm (up to 6 ohm is fine/ok value). I was also checking the throttle body by removing the inlet air hose it look alright, didn't seems that much of sot in the throttle body. But it seems that I need to change the battery, I had it for about four years but after about 2 days without driving the car it won't start.

It's not dirtt it's the recirculation of exhaust gases by the egr valve or turbo burning oil and feeding it into the intake manifold
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 4 жыл бұрын
ALL engines do this to a greater or lesser extent. It's the recirculation of bypass gases and combustion products coming from the crankcase via the PCV whether there is an EGR or not. Burning oil makes it worse, but a dirty MAP is not a sign of oil burning in itself.
@gtaseed
@gtaseed 4 жыл бұрын
The recirculated gasses from the EGR come in after the sensor, at least on my AVF passat, the sensor mostly gets clogged by dust that makes past the air filter combined with the oil that the turbo slowly leaks + pcv gasses, in time they get a thin cover of sticky junk, just had mine cleaned with isopropyl, worked a charm.

Cool accent, I could stand someone telling me my car has died with that accent and it wouldn't bother me a bit and I'm a guy, so I can imagine what effect it has on the girly's out there lol 🤭 Oh FYI I would recommend using brake cleaner but there is a product that's called sensor cleaner that won't destroy sensitive components inside the sensor. Also its used for mass airflow sensors to.
@CycloneCyd
@CycloneCyd 4 жыл бұрын
Ha ha, I wish! You can use any cleaner really - what IS important is that the cleaner leaves NO residue. Some contact cleaners DO leave a residue, so always check the can or manufacturers website. Products marketed as specific MAF/MAP cleaners won't leave a residue, but mostly it's a marketing ploy to charge more!

For a MAP sensor to be dirty like that, *ALL* of the intake system is dirtier than a dump site, especially since ALL MAPs must be mounted on the top section of any hose,pipe or intake manifold ( to avoid condensate collecting in it, says the largest MAP manuf).

You can use any cleaner that doesn’t leave any residue. Some cleaners leave a residue and that can destroy your sensor if it’s a hot wire sensor. The residue will get too hot on the sensor. All MAF cleaners are residue free. Certain brake cleaners are residue free and some are not.

What is important here is not so much the name given to the cleaner (marketing mostly), but that the cleaner you use contains no oils or other chemicals and *leaves no residue.* As mentioned many carb and contact cleaners do leave residue. Brake cleaner is the only one out there that *_never_* leaves a residue.. It won't harm the sensor in the slightest - rare earth metals and ceramics are tough.
