No. Poverty accounts for a part of the story, not the whole. This is a pattern in certain poor areas around the world but not all. It's a cultural issue not one of poverty. Also priorities. It's some nice looking vehicles, and expensive shoes in this video. They use it to step over the trash, but not pick it up. Being honest about the problem is the first step to solving it. This is coming from someone who actually lived in those areas.

A lot of people will make excuses for what you just witnessed. Structural racism will be on the top of that list. In a way, they're right. In another way, we see people who have no pride in their immediate space. I won't even go as far as to say neighborhood pride. Most of those people are stuck there so it's no real pride. But if you don't have the decency to pick up trash outside of your door, then there is something fundamentally wrong with you. There are tons of poor communities all over the world. They at least take pride in their immediate space, and care enough about the kids they have to pass on tradition. You make the best of a bad situation. If not for yourself, for your children. It takes no money, and no real effort at all to pick up trash and not destroy property.

Have you ever been to the the business district near Rutgers? Camden has a lot of history, and it is unfortunate that the area generally looks this way, but you have to understand the socio-economic stresses of the people living in these conditions. Poor government funding and racial inequalities play a big factor as to what's happened here.

When I was born (in the 60’s) we lived in Compton, on Lime. We moved from there to North Town LB, then to the area next to El Dorado park. My first apartment was on 60th and Atlantic, in 1988. Compton has always been seen, and known, as a ghetto hood! A few “nice homes” don’t make the area desirable.
