You had the right idea. EDM has such high pressure waves it can erode ears
@bryankirk35676 жыл бұрын
Detonation is where the fuel/air mixture turns from a low explosive (burning), into a high explosive, which detonates, mostly due to an overpressure situation. An easy way to do this is by installing a turbo without dropping the compression ratio.

Blew a piston on an engine while giving it the beans, looked like someone took a gas axe to the side of the piston and melted a clean hole down and around the rings, ran it a bit lean, lol, lesson learnt.

So, if both pistons look like the good one, would you re-use them if the engine was low compression and you fixed the knock?
@clintwheeler1424 Жыл бұрын
Great video but I have a question. If you have sligth "eroding" above the first ring, all the rings move freely, and no roughness on the top of the piston could you reuse this piston? If you can reuse the piston would you take a peice of fine sand paper and clean the "eroding" up?
@dirtygarageguy Жыл бұрын
No. The piston itself is age hardened. Getting that hot removes this age hardening and the piston is prone to crack at the pin bosses

Great video. Very informative. :) I think this was a case of "whichever piston goes first". Do you know what other damaged this caused? Guessing the cylinder walls didn't like this very much. What is that weird pattern on the "leading edge" of the skirt on the worst piston?
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
The piston skirt we'll get to in the next video. As for other damage the cylinder head would take some of the damage - but I don't have pictures of that

Hi, i want to take your opinion on somth. it's not related to this vid, but i am sure you can help. My bike sometimes acts funny. some days it will be running very well, n i can ride for 100s of KM with no issue, and sometimes i feel it loses power! I keep oil change on time, filters, spark plugs n maintain it very well. What do you think is the issue? is it weather? is it the wind slowing the bike? Fyi, my bike never died on me or left me in middle of the road. Any thoughts
@beachboardfan95446 жыл бұрын
Damn what kind of compression are those running and how heavy are they?
@tonyhansom31606 жыл бұрын
Have you had chance to inspect the barrels because this looks like the problem the old two strokes had when the compression was too high and the petrol - oil mixture was too weak. The initial problem was detonation and then the piston started to leave deposits of alloy on the barrel which started a partial seizure, not detonation traveling down to the top ring. Just a thought.
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
There is no build up just material removed - you can see where the already damaged piston has scuffed the cylinder. I've seen hundreds of pistons like this for both 2 and 4T. Like a said in the video you can see that the top surface of the ring groove is also eroded away.

Question for camshafts are concerned for high compression Motors what is the best camshaft for a high-compression motor to produce the most power out of it from the factory?
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
We'll get to that - one thing at a time.
@jamescuartero6 жыл бұрын
Oh okay well if this is not too much to ask if you can incorporate this into your next video the specs of my engine is 231 intake 231 exhaust 354 exhaust and 334 intake is the cam specs with 11.5 to 1 compression ratio what will be the best for that particular compression ratio is the cam that's in there now good for all motor or is that more of a turbo cam?
@allesklarklaus1476 жыл бұрын
This damaged piston along the side looks a little bit like the damaged piston I posted a few months ago with a hole burned into it at the side. Though that was from a diesel. And there the flame burned the piston's aluminium away around the rings but the rings themselves were just fine.

So here's a question for you Matt. With two sparkling plugs that the pistons are designed for, does this mean 2 flame fronts and no "burn to detonation" I.e with one surely there is the space and time for the flame to exceed the speed of sound? Or is this just compression too far anyway? Best regards Paul
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
This is a good question and we need to cover a lot more on detonation, combustion etc
@ErrtuZarathos6 жыл бұрын
How come detonation pushes downwards against piston? Shouldn't detonation product pressure every direction? Or is it because piston is still comming up when detonation hapoends so two forces meet up?
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
Ignition has usually occured or is occuring. Below the piston is low pressure, rememebering that rings don't perfectly seal. So the combustion gases and hence pressure of that gases has 2 ways to go - towards the spark plug ignition event - which is does - and down against the rings. We can't see the gas interaction because it gone - what we're left with is the piston - in bits LOL

What's that black stuff on the skirts?
@rationalmartian6 жыл бұрын
I think it may be some kind of anti friction coating to help with piston slapping.
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
Teflon - that's in the next video
@funcounting6 жыл бұрын
If teflon can take rubbing on the skirts why aren't they making rings out of it or at least coated with it?
@dirtygarageguy6 жыл бұрын
The rings get hot, and wouldn't be able to hold on. As you can see the hot combustion gases bear down directly on the rings. The other problem is coverage. One thing with PTFE is it doesn't like to stick to much, and a thin cross-section ring doesn't have much meat to hold onto.
