One of the most elucidating experiences I had early in my tuning days was fixing a pair of Det-cans to the engine that I was tuning. The ability to hear the *sparkles* that would occur on the edge or leading up to detonation inspired me to learn more about combustion dynamics and helped me calibrate knock-sensor equipped engines with noisy valvetrains.

So much real world info. I know I appreciate it. I bought a project 280Z with an RB25 swap. Nice collection of parts,but lacks the execution I want, and Its at 22 psi, on a stock rebuild, with a pre-tuned ECM. No Bueno. I’m collecting parts to avoid exactly what you are describing here. Dial it back, set up the proper tune, and enjoy it. Hero HP numbers=a pile of broken parts and a lot of wasted cash. Thank you, Mike. Keep them coming.

No joke though, I had a fairly large racing company doing remote tuning on my car. they are one of the big ones for GM's. they were using hp tuners. I knew just enough about this stuff to realize they had gone in and almost completely defeated the knock control system to push the numbers up. the knock control system typically has a tables to remove a certain amount of timing advance based on a variety of factors. the table that gives the absolute value to the number of degree removed was set to 0. I proceeded to learn how to tune my own engine and told them to shove it. One of the best decisions I have ever made I am sure my car wouldn't have lasted long, it currently has 180k miles on it and that was 120k miles ago.

very useless data tho, every engine has a different exhaust temp. If you do the same build with same boost same internals everything the same then yes you can use egts for comparison but egts are not comparbale at all. A sr20 is nit gonna have the same egt as a k20. Its like saying they need the same advance- Whats more important is intake temp since that is actually comparable. But even if it gets very hot u usually install a failsafe so the engine runs less boost or advance when iat‘s get hot. More boost= more egts- it doesnt mean your engine is gonna blow up. Real engine damage can happen wayyy before egg‘s get out of „norm“

My last engine failure was a piston wrist pin retaining clip snapping in two places, still not exactly sure why. I think I used a metal tool to help get it into its groove last time so I've switched to using a wooden tool now so I don't scratch it. Most common failure I get is burning/cracking through the piston at the mold parting line. I've thought about using a dremel to make that a smooth surface, but I don't know if that would help much. For now I just keep the temps as low as I can and don't push it when its too hot.

@TheRealBanana

@@motoiq Its a stock Honda motorcycle engine from a CB300, Id love to mess with the tune but their ECUs are locked down tight. I think they come a bit lean from the factory. I also really beat the hell out of it (lots of time at full throttle 6th gear, high rpm). But they are very easy to take apart and put back together and the piston is $60 so I don't mind it too much. At this point im treating it as a consumable item 😅. Although every now and then it wipes out the cylinder too which is $90.

Hey Mike, my 12:1 compression H22 Honda motor runs really rich. It was dyno tuned on 93 octane, and made decent power. The exhaust is sooty. I know honda Vtec motors are tuned rich from the factory. Is this just a safety measure to prevent detonation at high rpm? And if I tried to get away with a leaner tune, what would be the downsides? Appreciate you guys. Great knowledge here.

I am surprised that you wouldn’t offer to install and tune the engine especially after high performance rebuild. In the commercial world an Engine job is not completed until running up and the engine based on the specific load running in diagram and load testing the complete package for few hours . I am surprised that this kind of rebuild is even considered where one person is building the engine different person is installing it and a 3rd person is running and testing the engine. On the end nobody is responsible for anything and the customer is simply dumping money and obviously the customer is the one that has no training or complete understanding of the process. This is completely shocking to me.
