I'm starting to think KZbin is sandbagging The Work Shop, 97k subs for a long time. I remember 50k subs celebration, the cake in the van years back. I love your channel Matt. Cheers mate

Maybe there's just that many people that like to watch some one ragging on other 95% of the time, it does become old hat real quick. Why i am here now as this vid is something else. Something i've been doing since i rebuilt my 1st nitro engine with a piston ring as a nipper. Yes i am one of them, sub'd no need as it pops up anyways.

I do have a ring compressor but it's just a hell of a lot easier to use your fingers. Fingering your ring is better with a bit of lubrication...

@@dirtygarageguy That`s how the pistons are inserted in a lot of engines. With patience and lube a good night can be had.

On motorcycles, I agree that ring compressors are completely unnecessary and most cases I preload the piston before I even connect the wrist and the rod…. The only reason I use them on cars and trucks is to save time.

with the inline 4 Matt that's a little harder because you have to do all 4 at the same time thats usually a 2-4 man jobby in my experience trying to get every ring compressed to slide the cylinder over all 4 is a mission

No you don't. You do two at a time, not 4.

I realised a few days ago this will only work for bottom loading rings will not work toploading with the rod as in a car engine.

it depends on how "HARD" the rings are. but true, 9,9 out of 10.2 times you dont need them and people who say they do, most of the time they just bad with technique in general. the guys with all the tools and the clean garage like its a kitchen...

Do you not need to heat and expand the cylinder first so you can burn your fingers, and then sneakily edit that bit out?

Maybe I'll try that the next time I change piston rings😊 I was not aware of that it's so easy on engines without a chamfer. I have one of those crappy compression tools, and it has cost me at least 2 broken rings.

I would think you are more likely to break a ring that's crept over the pin if you use a tool, you can feel when it's sitting right with your fingers

I'd like to see you do that on a v8 engine. I've done them buy hand on my dirt bikes and road bikes but there a bit different between a worn diesel piston ring and a fresh crom molly ring set on a small block chev and even less on a big block. I've tried the rick method when our ring compresor failed. The ring springs out under tension

Where do folks typically go wrong on doing these to end up breaking them? Must be much more difficult on a multi cylinder arrangement when you need to have more than one going in at same moment?

What if you put your pistons in first on the table and battle with piston pin and circlip instead of rings? I know this is viable only if you have a twin...

Bet you have tiny slices on your fingers from man handling that stuck ring out😁🤣 but yea spot on Matt you can feel a lot better doin this way than a ring clamp and beating it with a mallet 👍🏻😎😉

Matt, Ive always been curious: does the 120 degree offset between the rings always remain when the engine is running? Does this shift still remain the same in the engine that You are disassembling for renovation?

Do the rings stay 120deg apart when engine is running or are they rotating around?
@sedsberg77

Unless they are stuck or in a 2-stroke they should rotate.
@lukaszM46
@lukaszM46 5 ай бұрын
@@sedsberg77 what makes it different in a 2 stroke? Also if they rotate then there isn't much point in setting them 120deg apart when assembling then?
@sedsberg77
@sedsberg77 5 ай бұрын
@@lukaszM46 2-strokes have ports or openings in the cylinder walls. If the rings rotate the ring ends will pop into the ports and break. That's why they have these small pins to stop them from rotating.
