I re-watch your videos all the time. When I think I've got it sussed I come and learn that no! No I haven't. Where was your body weight!!! LOL Go back and practice again. I console myself with the fact that I have improved so much from when I started. Still working on not good footing it though! Transitioning on the right leg BLOWS MY MIND every time. Brain just melts. LOLOLOL What I've learnt over all is that - if you just want to throw on some skates and move. You can do that quite successfully eventually. BUT if you want to skate like Deb and flow so gracefully it takes HARD WORK and HOURS of practice. Really. PRACTICE .

I've finally felt comfortable with crossovers yesterday at the rink. Felt it out and figured out my weight was too far behind. So yes skating with your weight forward and being able to control that left outside edge is crucial. This video is spot on as always. I also found while helping my husband run some reverse skate drills in the center of the rink. That I can easily do forward to reverse transitions in the center practice area, or out at my empty tennis courts we practice at over and over. But when I try to do them skating in the main outer lane with the public skate. I just freeze up or over rotate. A little case of the yips I'm trying to get past. Safe area i can spin either way, skate backwards, carve backwards, groove and mix up which ways I twist or "crab skate" as i call it leading in to a transition. Add the risk of possibly kicking a child or another new skater trying to improve into my skate zone and I just freeze up. Amazed at the skaters who can freely weave through the crowds backwards and also while dancing. Something to work on down the road. For now I'm just focusing on getting as comfy on quads and rink skating as my young self was when I was cruising out on the streets on inlines back in the day. Just not going quite as fast, i was a bit of a speed seeker. Long story short, yes get those edges comfortable. Adjust trucks so they feel comfortable as well so they feel confident to know how much lean equals how much turn, and with weight forward. Think of it as Stepping forward like going in to a jog, balls of feet equal nimble, mobile, agile. Not leaning back and carefully touching the foot forward like you're about to step on glass. Step confidently forward, stride, strut, saunter into that corner.

I have a question. This was a bit of a disagreement at a local club so maybe you could clear it up. The steps you do at 10:05-10:15 in this video.. we were doing similar and I had real trouble staying still. Although I'm still learning, I mentioned that my setup wasn't totally suited to the floor (I had quite hard wheels and washers so they rolled very easily). The "instructor" laughed at me. I think I had a point. Whats your take?

It also includes photos of the scenery on my walk to the car park I skate on (which is near the sea and surprisingly beautiful for a car park), as well as pictures of my skates and a couple of very short videos of me skating and one of my shadow skating! They all remind me of how glad I am that I came back to roller skating before it was too late. I’m 57 but I’m still bouncing instead of breaking and for that I’m grateful.
