Just a little point regarding your infrared thermometer: if you point it at reflective surface (e.g. glass, mirror, metal), you need to adjust the emissivity setting of your thermometer (if it has one) to account for it. Otherwise, you'll be measuring the temperature of the object the surface is reflecting not the surface itself.

The IR gun is ok for some surfaces but it's not really accurate for shiny or glass objects. Infrared thermometers have good accuracy when measuring most objects, but shiny, reflective surfaces can be a challenge. You should be especially wary when measuring the temperature of shiny metal objects, but even reflections off of glossy paint can affect accuracy. Also you need to be very close to what you are reading. The laser is not reading temperature, that just shows where the center of the "cone" is and the farther you are away from the object the wider area your are reading. The gun will usually say how large the cone gets at varying distances.

The wiper is designed to stay down so the trapped water doesn’t just blow back up the windshield. It pauses in the down position to give the collected water an opportunity to blow out to either side of the windshield.
@TheNinthGeneration18 ай бұрын
Why not just start it in the down position?
@retiredbitjuggler34718 ай бұрын
@@TheNinthGeneration1 That would seem logical because that’s how it has been done for 100 years. However, Tesla is not in the business of doing things the same way if there is a superior alternative. Believe it or not, the wiper in the down position interrupts the highly tuned aerodynamic flow of the truck and affects its efficiency. I believe it was Lars M. Or Hans V. from Tesla who gave a detailed explanation for the reasoning. They initially wanted to conceal the wiper under a pop up door, but discovered that parking the wiper in the upright position eliminated the airflow issue and eliminated the complexity of the hidden wiper compartment. You have to respect their eye for detail. 🙂
@TheNinthGeneration18 ай бұрын
@@retiredbitjuggler3471 the truck is not aerodynamic at all, I doubt the wiper being upright makes that much difference. It also means that the windshield doesn’t actually get cleared off as the first sweep brings things down to the base then the second sweep allows it to go back up, rather than the common practice that pushes things out to the side first and off the windshield, then traps the remaining liquid under a bar to prevent it from going back up. Also, having one extremely long wiper means that the edges have very little strength, even normal wipers are a bit too long in some cases.
@retiredbitjuggler34718 ай бұрын
@@TheNinthGeneration1 You should investigate this for yourself and not let it’s appearance fool you. It is far more aerodynamic than it looks. Don’t take my word for it - do some research for yourself and let me know what you discover.

Quick tip: Infrared thermometers do not read accurately on reflective surfaces, so it's unlikely the stainless steel actually warmed anywhere near as much you measured. Also, the laser on these thermometers is just a laser pointer to show you the center of the circle area that it is measuring an average over. Typically circle diameter at x distance is notated on side of thermometer.

Oof that braking distance looked pretty bad. I mean I drive cars and not giant heavy trucks? But I could stop faster than that on glare ice in most of the vehicles I have owned. But yeah, I'm no Tesla fan, but Dirty Tesla's spot on about the snow. My gas vehicles, all with conventional light bulb based headlights (no LEDs and no halogens), you have to clear the snow off, they usually have a bulb then a big light enclosure so they get no significant heating from the bulb. They will not melt snow unless it's like 1 degree below freezing or something. I think the lack of door knobs could be a problem, but my winshield wipers have frozen in icing conditions. The doors, and indeed even the gas flap, have all frozen shut in severe icing conditions. In an ice storm (that I tried to "keep ahead" of and didn't), I had about 3 inches of ice build up on all the forward-facing surfaces of my car, the grill iced over and the hood iced shut! And it turns out driving around with like 1000 pounds of ice, and the hood iced shut (so it may have been running a tad hot..) results in poor mileage -- my mileage dropped from 40MPG to something like 25MPG! It took 3 days (in 60 degree temps) for my hood to thaw out!

The wiper did about as poor as I would have thought for the size. Not awful, but not great. When I had my F150 with a bed cover, I had to use a push broom as well to get a majority of it off. Same with the cab roof. Didn't want to be that person blowing all kinds of snow on the road. Now that LED headlights are the norm, they really need some kind of defrost capability. Either integrated to the glass like the mach-e windshield, or some kind of solid state heater+fan inside the fixture. Lastly, stainless steel is quite reflective to IR, so your IR temp gun is going to see whatever the reflection angle is.

Good video. That's how I like to remember Michigan, not the more typical muddy slush. Has anyone actually used Tesla tire chains on their Tesla? I've got 'em for my Model Y but the traction control is so good I can't see every needing to use them. I drove up to the mountains about 6000' to play in the snow. Showing the chains got me past the check point. Up by Mt Baldy I drove into a snow bank to park. My Prius on the other hand.... great car, but even with tire chains on anything slippery it gets stuck. (The last time I had tire chains on the Prius was 2019 it slide down a slope into a snow plow. I hit the plow blade at about 1 mph so no damage. And to be fair, the snow plow (big dump truck) was also stuck. I spent a couple of hours trying to get down the mountain. The guys who helped me were snow plow truck drivers coming off their shift. They all had rear wheel drive cars and they were stuck.

Nice video, thanks for the feedback. I ordered my Cybertruck 3/23 so I’m sure I am quite a ways away from getting it haha. Hope you and your family are enjoying yours. Love the front camera, I am hoping they will allow an option for one to add for my S and X plaid 🙏🏼, my S plaid is a 2021 so the sensors are easier IMO but for my 23 X plaid it’s difficult to park close without worries of how close to actually are

QUESTION - SALT CORROSION? Curious if you saw salt corrosion as an issue? How often are you washing the truck? The manual reads like it’s a delicate creature compared to how rugged it looks. Lots of immediate cleaning. Thoughts?
@DirtyTesla4 ай бұрын
This is a long term issue that no one will have a real world answer too yet. The fact is salt can corrode SS, but it takes a long time. imo, a couple washes per year will prevent this, and this SS will last far longer than the rusted out trucks you normally see all over Michigan.
@travkeyes16 күн бұрын
its stainless steal there shouldnt be salt corrosion.

You should always clean off the snow on any vehicle before using it, in fact here it’s required by law

It is required by law to have your lights and number plates clean. And if you don't clean the snow, it will form ice and when driving high speed it might break off and hit another car, damage it or even kill people. In that case you will be held responsible for the accident because you didn't clean the snow.

So its nbd in a storm u have to pull off on the side of the highway every 3 mins because these dummies built a headlight shelf to catch the snow and ice? U cant see out the camera in this test w light snow hows that in a blizzard! What u said was cool but I'll stick to my better designed F250. If i break down i can fix most issues quick, get back on the road and be a hero because I'm a manly man who can do stuff like that. I can also pull an excavator back from a remote job site after 12 hours work then control things inside the cab with gloves on or greasy/dirty hands, w tactile knobs. All stuff truck companies have already thought about btw. We're not reinventing the wheel here they put a battery and an ipad in some crapoiky made vehicles and act like they're so advanced as a company lol I'd never drive that toaster w the big dildo wiper ever! U can play Mario Kart while u wait to charge in your "truck" but i got shit to do. Once electric is actually feasible we'll switch but until then thanks for being the test dummies

All terrain tires are actually pretty bad for snow. Snow tires try and hold onto snow because snow-on-snow traction is pretty high whereas all terrain tires try and get rid of mud because mud-on-mud traction is low
