In CT we get all types of snow and one of the most common is a very heavy wet snow that turns to slush on the roads. It ends up covering the entire bottom and front of the vehicle when driving. It’s almost like an icy mud. Super sticky. I can say with 100% certainty that those headlights will be completely caked with slush and rendered unusable a large portion of the time while driving in the snow here. I would expect that’s the case in most places, at least in the northeast.

The wiper did about as poor as I would have thought for the size. Not awful, but not great. When I had my F150 with a bed cover, I had to use a push broom as well to get a majority of it off. Same with the cab roof. Didn't want to be that person blowing all kinds of snow on the road. Now that LED headlights are the norm, they really need some kind of defrost capability. Either integrated to the glass like the mach-e windshield, or some kind of solid state heater+fan inside the fixture. Lastly, stainless steel is quite reflective to IR, so your IR temp gun is going to see whatever the reflection angle is.

Just a little point regarding your infrared thermometer: if you point it at reflective surface (e.g. glass, mirror, metal), you need to adjust the emissivity setting of your thermometer (if it has one) to account for it. Otherwise, you'll be measuring the temperature of the object the surface is reflecting not the surface itself.
@DirtyTesla7 ай бұрын
Yeah that's why I was a little unsure of the mirror but... the tailgate stainless steel was still frozen, whereas near the charge port and on the doors (where climate control could be effecting it) the SS was above freezing. Either way I'm sure my little temp monitor is not fancy enough for that.

The wiper is designed to stay down so the trapped water doesn’t just blow back up the windshield. It pauses in the down position to give the collected water an opportunity to blow out to either side of the windshield.
@TheNinthGeneration16 ай бұрын
Why not just start it in the down position?
@retiredbitjuggler34716 ай бұрын
@@TheNinthGeneration1 That would seem logical because that’s how it has been done for 100 years. However, Tesla is not in the business of doing things the same way if there is a superior alternative. Believe it or not, the wiper in the down position interrupts the highly tuned aerodynamic flow of the truck and affects its efficiency. I believe it was Lars M. Or Hans V. from Tesla who gave a detailed explanation for the reasoning. They initially wanted to conceal the wiper under a pop up door, but discovered that parking the wiper in the upright position eliminated the airflow issue and eliminated the complexity of the hidden wiper compartment. You have to respect their eye for detail. 🙂
@TheNinthGeneration16 ай бұрын
@@retiredbitjuggler3471 the truck is not aerodynamic at all, I doubt the wiper being upright makes that much difference. It also means that the windshield doesn’t actually get cleared off as the first sweep brings things down to the base then the second sweep allows it to go back up, rather than the common practice that pushes things out to the side first and off the windshield, then traps the remaining liquid under a bar to prevent it from going back up. Also, having one extremely long wiper means that the edges have very little strength, even normal wipers are a bit too long in some cases.
@retiredbitjuggler34716 ай бұрын
@@TheNinthGeneration1 You should investigate this for yourself and not let it’s appearance fool you. It is far more aerodynamic than it looks. Don’t take my word for it - do some research for yourself and let me know what you discover.

The IR gun is ok for some surfaces but it's not really accurate for shiny or glass objects. Infrared thermometers have good accuracy when measuring most objects, but shiny, reflective surfaces can be a challenge. You should be especially wary when measuring the temperature of shiny metal objects, but even reflections off of glossy paint can affect accuracy. Also you need to be very close to what you are reading. The laser is not reading temperature, that just shows where the center of the "cone" is and the farther you are away from the object the wider area your are reading. The gun will usually say how large the cone gets at varying distances.

After watching your channel, I decided to buy a 2021 model 3 new with FSD Then later, after having a ton of problems with the car, we sold it back to Tesla and got the model Y with FSD. Bought it and it was a 2024. As the problems started to get worse with the model Y, we decided to give up on Tesla completely. Now we have a Cadillac CT5 for my daughter for college.. I hate to say this, but I was extremely disappointed in the quality that Tesla puts out, especially comparing it to the Cadillac. There is no comparison. Honestly, once you drive a another vehicle in the same price range there's no comparison that Tesla is a disappointment in my opinion. Just wish I could get my money back for FSD, which at best was dangerous. In some cases, we tried it, and it literally took the car in an uncontrollable situation, even at a slow speed. So we decided to never interact with FSD again after a couple calls. I paid $10,000 for FSD and I am extremely disappointed in the product as many other people I have spoke to. I also have a KZbin channel that is a little smaller than yours so I definitely understand the need for creating content, but I think it's important to let people know how FSD could be dangerous

I live in Finland and we have long winter. I have never have any car I wouldn't need to brush clean from snow, so that's not a problem. However, the ice is. You can't count that you are always there to do it, so car should be made in a way the ice can block something important. In a past, I have had problems where thick ice forms in bumper and prevents opening the trunk. That's typically not problem with sedan modes, but many models with larger backdoor are problematic. Worst problems arise when it snows and then it partly melt before freezing in. It's practically solid ice, and thickness can be several centimeters. In our country, this type of weather is quite common. With cybertruck, headlights and bed cover would be frozen solid and without melting the ice, practically impossible to clean. For headlights, that's a big issue, which prevents driving.

Quick tip: Infrared thermometers do not read accurately on reflective surfaces, so it's unlikely the stainless steel actually warmed anywhere near as much you measured. Also, the laser on these thermometers is just a laser pointer to show you the center of the circle area that it is measuring an average over. Typically circle diameter at x distance is notated on side of thermometer.

12:00 2 ideas for the tonneau cover melting snow: since it was rolled up, it was slightly protected from the cold and was well over freezing when it was rolled down, so the snow that fell melted immediately OR the black color received just enough solar radiation to keep melt the snow. It looked like you filmed in very light snow or drift, I think under heavy snow it would accumulate on the tonneau easily.

That is runoff water. No way that is heated

In a constant spray of slush or heavy snowfall? No way. The presenter mentioned the old incandescent headlights; I distinctly remember THEM freezing over when driving in snow. The CT's headlights, I think, will be a big fail in winter driving.

I hope Tesla watches this video of yours, and realizes that driving at night, in the snow, will almost be impossible without Headlights. Might have to come up with a "heat strip" that will fit under headlights and front viewing camera.

This is only a prototype so all these problems should be solved before vehicles are delivered to paying customers.

Just a minor warning, the infrared temperature reader isn't accurate on shiny surfaces, infrared reflects off of it, the temperature of the glass, shiny stainless steel isn't the temperature of the surface, instead the temperature of all the surrounding objects that are radiating their own infrared radiation towards it. Look up emissivity rating.

You are doing great for TESLA to find the problems so TESLA can fix them, it is good Tesla listens to its customers which is why the FSD is not yet public it is on limited customers.

Interesting. So what you’re saying is that people don’t usually clean their cars when they have snow on it before they start driving? I always thought that was mandatory/ only takes like 5mins at most if you have a snow brush/broom

Great design for the headlights. I guess that's why they are putting the light bar. Lol

Great video Chris. Good suggestions for heated headlamps and rear camera washer. I hope Tesla adds them soon.

Those all terrain tires are actually pretty bad on snow compared to something like the Crossclimate2 (which I don't think you can have on such a big wheels)

I wonder too. There was said it was for free, but it costs some energy. Much less work with all the features, but you must pay the bill ;)

QUESTION - SALT CORROSION? Curious if you saw salt corrosion as an issue? How often are you washing the truck? The manual reads like it’s a delicate creature compared to how rugged it looks. Lots of immediate cleaning. Thoughts?
@DirtyTesla2 ай бұрын
This is a long term issue that no one will have a real world answer too yet. The fact is salt can corrode SS, but it takes a long time. imo, a couple washes per year will prevent this, and this SS will last far longer than the rusted out trucks you normally see all over Michigan.

The headlight thing is a valid concern but it carries to all vehicles, especially if your roads are salted. Heat doesn't deal with winter grime. that's what headlight washers are for, and they absent from most vehicles (along with heat traces in unusual places). The problem with the Cybertruck is it's designed in such a way that the recess just invites snow to pack and stick there, as somewhat shown by the melt at 14:20. ALl other trucks have massive headlight clusters that are more or less flush to the body, while this thing will only be effective with its optional light bar unless the design sees a revision. It's bad design. The wiper also seems to struggle displacing snow at its outer edge, which again, common problem with most vehicles with long wipers, but worse here (it's powder, it shouldn't take that many swipes to clear especially with heating lol). The radius also gives you a big blind spot on the passenger side if you're ever in the wrong conditions. Even the front camera placement could be improved to avoid that stupid icicle situation (it's not going to be a unique occurance). That's what separates a lot of European and Japanese cars from whatever gets made on this continent. You hardly see those touches on our stuff. 12:00 not sure why you didn't chek by opening the cover. There's no evident HVAC ducting but it would be nice to confirm (you don't know what's up until you do). Always will be baffled by the lack of washers on the back cameras at the very least.

Hey, thanks a ton for this video! I live in North Idaho which is snowy almost half the year, and I am interested in a Cybertruck. For a guy like me, this video is GOLD! You showed a lot of things I need to see. One question: What is the circular thingy on top of your center screen? Secondly, does Tesla offer snow tires for Cybertruck? That’s a must-have here. No way I could use all-weather tires. Thanks again!!
@DirtyTesla7 ай бұрын
The circular thing is a phone mount from Jowua (link in description :P) and as of now Tesla doesn't offer snow tires, but you don't have to buy tires from Tesla, you can get them from anywhere as long as they're the right size.
@flyshacker7 ай бұрын
@@DirtyTesla Thanks! I guess I would need to buy a set of Tesla rims, right? If I want to swap wheels twice a year (which is less wear and less work than removing and installing different tires on the same wheels), then I need Tesla’s tire pressure sensors to report tire pressure to the car gauges. Am I right? I am just thinking way ahead if I buy a CT. Thanks.
@DirtyTesla7 ай бұрын
No, there are after market options for wheels and tires. You *can* get all Tesla stuff, but it's typically more expensive.
