Today we have the brand new Tesla Cybertruck, and we'll be doing the hardest thing an EV Truck can do - Tow 11,000lbs in below freezing weather. How much can the Cybertruck tow? How far can the Cybertruck tow? Well today we find out the answer to both of those questions.
Tesla usually gives out some pretty nice perks when ordering through a referral code: ts.la/zack10701
This is a Dual Motor All Wheel Drive CyberTruck. The Vehicle was charged up to 100% the night before this test. (The Cybertruck Probably reached 100% around 2am in the morning, and then sat in my garage for about 6 hours or so while still plugged in, before coming out of the garage and being connected to the trailer.

As a HC-130 Load Master I concur. I've carried fuel trucks in the back on chain restraints, on a good day we d-rate the 10K chains down to 7,500 with the angle of pull loss and we require 8x the weight of the load for forward restraint and 3x for aft restraint and always in even sets of chains. For example: a 20K truck in the back we would use 22 chains for forward restraint and 8 for aft restraint with a total of 30 chains for a 20K package. It takes awhile. When in doubt "stick it in H compartment."

As I recall, you mentioned it cost you $13.00 to charge the CT at home to 100%, then got @ 90 miles of range (along with a ton of anxiety). Presumably it would cost more at a commercial charging station, then to go say 500 miles you would need to make six stops (how long would it take to charge back to 100% at each stop, not counting unhitching and re-hitching the trailer) so @ $72.00 in charging costs. Pretty obvious to me why an ICE vehicle makes a hell of a lot more sense for ANY towing operation.
@josiahgibson6373
@josiahgibson6373 2 ай бұрын
I feel like most ICE trucks get something like ~25mpg when towing, so a 500 mile trip would take ~20 gallons. At a flat $3 a gallon that's $60. Not too different from the electric truck, unless you're doing it all the time. (Although the ICE vehicle is a lot cheaper up front as well)
@shinhochulp
@shinhochulp 2 ай бұрын
@@josiahgibson6373 No, it’s half that at best. When I tow, it’s 8-10mpg (gasoline truck towing 6-7k lbs). But even if it were 4-5x the cost, I wouldn’t even consider using an electric truck for towing needs.

I did the road trip on a Mach e and had to stop every 1.5 to 2 hrs from Az to Central Valley to Bay Area . 8 stops total. Some areas there’s no fast chargers. And it lead me to 3 unusable chargers that were down. Took 40min to charge to 80% and off we go. Total 20hr to get there. Price $35 average charge cost each time. Almost 2x cost of a gas car. Worst was Central Valley Stockton Walmart was back up and a line to charge cars. Safe average milage is every 130 miles per charge. As I didn’t want to wait another hour charging from 80% to 100%

While I normally don't dare question truckers given that, as a hatchback person, we clearly live in different universes. I do think "real world" needs to be put into perspective. A 2021 Axios study on F150 drivers found that 7% of people use their truck to tow regularly, 29% sometimes, and 63% never tow anything. Other most frequent use cases: 87% use it to shop for errands, 50% for commuting and 70% for pleasure driving. Granted, I live in a city, but pickups are extraordinarily common here. The issue with the trucks here(and across the US according to the above stat) is that they are a fashion statement rather than a utility. Their main purpose is just as a flex on other pickup drivers. In those cases, an EV truck checks their boxes while fixing the issue of commuting with 14mpg while not actually taking advantage of the reason the engine takes 14mpg. For those who use Pickups as a utility, y'all clearly are gonna stick to your truck for at least 12+ years (as you clearly actually use them) and by 2036, I am sure ev tech will evolve enough to become worthy of being a utility to those who do actually drive 500 miles a day towing 14,000 pounds.

It’s actually just the battery percentage with the vehicles standard rated range. You can tap the number to change it to % or miles value. @kevino6416 I think the cold was part of the test considering he tested the Rivian in the same type of conditions. And the Ford has has so many issues with consistency in production they aren't in the same area. That being said I'm a Ford guy but they are having huge issues with the batteries not degrading. Elon is smart and does take feedback well so there is no ? This truck will be great. That being said I do not understand how everyone pushing so hard for these clean vehicles aren't interested in how or where the minerals come from 90 percent come from Chinese controlled mines in the Congo that are don in the most inhumane conditions and environmentally harmful way possible esp the cobalt mines. But activist only care about what they are told to care about its truly unreal. In our culture it's more inhumane to accidentally misgender someone than worry about the amount of human trafficking going on especially at our southern border with the cartels taking young women and boys and forcing the rest of the family to cross the border or die our priorities are so backwards. Not saying electric isn't the way forward but at what cost to humanity

How cold is it? I recently talked to a ford salesman about a Lightning. He tested it in some of our cold Canadian winter weather. He wanted to test the range in our -40C winter weather. Truck was parked and charged in the dealership garage over night. That morning he made it 20 miles and turned around. Almost didn’t make it back to the dealership on the charge. That that was pretty interesting. I know they have a place, but I find it amazing how true winter weather destroys the range.

Chemistry in the battery electrolytes degrade VERY rapidly at -40C. @proletariat9467 Just like diesel and gasoline. G2 or Type 2 Diesel starts to crystalize it's wax at low temp, where Type 1 won't, but neither are freeze proof and -40C is very rapidly approaching not just fuel freezing, but other fluids and parts as well. Material strength of various other parts of your truck will brittle. May not be a city slicker, and you may can go a LOT farther then an EV, but there are limits to lots of things and -40 Celsius is a point most anything won't tolerate.
