I just traded in a 2011 5.3 Silverado. Had 99000 miles on it, ran perfect with no lifter issues. In fact, I didn't even know it had AFM on it until I looked up the original sticker and determined that it did. I purchased a 2021 5.3 Silverado and now I'm concerned since reading all the stories about lifter failure. Not sure what to do now, get the Range plug in device, or just drive it and hope for the best.

@daniel taylor a very good friend of mine bought a new 2016 and at about 65,000 miles it started to tick. Into the dealer and $9300.00 later he got it back. I saw the invoice with all the parts needed aside from the camshaft. Needless to say he had a Range unit on the way before the job was done.

This rambling presentation could be done in about 30 seconds. Plug in a disabler to your OBD II port. The vehicle will simply stay in V8 mode, and not enter V4 mode. No codes, No damage.

Ok, I understand what you are looking for and I think you're overthinking it a little. I lost a lifter at 6,200 miles under warrantee, the lifters and the whole top of the motor was replaced including the oil solenoids, direct injection fuel pump, piping and injectors, you don't want to pay for that. Bottom line when you look at a breakdown of a DOD lifter it works just like a normal lifter until it latches under oil pressure and is held collapsed. I have a 2015 Silverado and when it hit 100,000 miles I installed a DOD Eliminator into my ALDL (OBD2) port to disable the function, it cost 50 bucks on Scamazon. If the AFM lifters aren't enabled they don't latch and continue to act as normal lifters having no detrimental effect on the engine, they just sit there doing their thing coasting along. After 35,000 miles no problems, just a fraction less mileage. Benefits ? No lag as the engine tries to switch between modes, the transmission shifts smoother and slightly firmer, again no lag. Better response and just tighter operation, the engine just feels like it is happier and no weird operation when the AFM, hung trans shift and Stabilitrak are trying to figure what to do. The engine is returned to full V8 operation all the time.

Good insight on AFM! I got a 2023 Blazer V6 with the new DFM in it. I put a AFM/DFM disabler in the OBD port at 7,500 miles. Hoping it at lest prolongs the lifter failure for a couple hundred thousand miles at lest. Even if I have to buy a new disabler every few years it would still be cheaper than lifter replacements after the warranty is up.

I do a lot of deliveries in my 2011 suburban lt 1500 and I bought a range technology ra003 for it. It now has about 378k miles on it, and with normal maintenance, these things last a long time! Maybe my LMG is a rarity, but it has the original rear end, original transmission, and original engine with original afm lifters. I guess it depends on your application. Obviously for an all performance engine, I'd also get rid of afm.

My thoughts is that the constant pressures on the lifters going from V8 to V4 is the cause of the failures. Moving parts wear over time and when you’re putting pressure on a spring to release tension and then reapply tension constantly, you’re wearing that part out prematurely. Disable the feature and the springs keep constant pressure which means less moving parts that are prone to failure.

Seems like a crapshoot either way. AFM has lots of failures. However, in my 2010 6.2L Escalade EXT, I have simply plugged in a 'Range' AFM disabler...... and .... I am changing the oil/filter ~3k miles, which may seem like overkill, but I firmly believe the vast majority of AFM issues would never occur if owners were absolutely diligent about keeping fresh, clean oil running through the system.

For years I've had a Range Technologies OBD plug-in to disable the stupid AFM on our 2011 Silverado 5.3. No issues at all, its at 120k miles currently. The only thing I have to do is unplug it before state inspection to allow all monitors to complete a drive cycle. For some reason it will prevent a couple of them from doing this, but you'd never know without using a scantool. Zero driveability issues, never a CEL. Been very pleased with this simple solution. As far as I'm concerned, GM should be sued for ALL years that had this garbage installed.

Hey man! Thanks for the mention! I've seen this topic come up a lot on various Facebook groups and I think my general opinion is this: I've seen and heard of engine failure caused by AFM at as early as 50k miles. So when asked the question of whether or not someone should by a Range obdii device or similar to turn off AFM I ask how many miles they have. My general advice is if its less than 100k disabling AFM via tune may prolong the life of the engine. For how long? Who knows. But without getting too technical I believe the main issue is the physical lifter design of the AFM lifters is the issue. As stated earlier people as low as 50k miles have reported lifter failure, I for example made it to right around 200k (hard miles) without them failing. So it's really anyone's guess as to whether or not a software delete would be effective. Now if I were to buy a let's say 2009 suburban with 200k on it, well of the engine hasn't been replaced yet I might just consider doing the hardware delete. One thing I want to point out Incase anyone goes to my video from this. The BTR NSR cam I used in the video is discontinued and I believe for good reason, my engine ended up knocking maybe 10k miles after this, now I'm not blaming BTR it could have been my crappy tuning skills but I'll leave it at that and highly recommend the Texas speed kits that include a stock replacement cam. It simplifies the install for the every day Joe. My final note- There's an expression that gets thrown around the LS world called "letting the magic out" whenever you open up these engines. I have first hand experience where after that heads come off, dirt debris and sludge tend to fall into the orifices. This ends up become bearing wear or potentially rod knock later on. So if you attempt this yourself keeping the engine inside the vehicle, be very clean, get a shop vac And suck up everything before removing the heads.
@mathewg1747
@mathewg1747 4 ай бұрын
The short answer is yes. That’s because the computer tells the engine when to activate AFM, so all you have to do is rewrite that portion of the code essentially. That means the system will never activate and you are left carrying hardware under the hood you won’t use.

I bought a 2021 LT1 Camaro and I decided to do a cam swap. I bought a stage 2 cam kit from Texas Speed and it required the DOD delete kit. I installed the cam and did delete kit and had to pull the heads, intakeand front cover off which was a good bit of workin the camaro. I swapped the lifters and installed the valley cover plugs. So yes I would say it would be the best idea to open the engine and replace the lifters because the way they are made they can still break down when the AFM has been disabled. So my engine runs great without it I don’t think they should have ever used AFM.

The DOD can be disabled by simply driving in manual range in l5 (6speed) or l7 (8 speed). The DOD is only enabled in the top gear of the transmission. You can also use a DOD disabled that you leave in the OBD2 port while driving in normal automatic mode. As soon as the disabled is removed from the OBD2 port, DOD is active again, so no permanent software change. All of that said, there IS ANOTHER valve train problems these engines have that makes it imperative to open the engine and install reputable aftermarket (non GM parts). The other problems that is occurring is the lifters turning 90 degrees in the bores. So now the roller is NOT rolling on the cam, but running perpendicular to the cam lobe. That produces a loud squeak / knock and will destroy the cam in short order. I am currently suffering this exact scenario...

As far as I understand it, its the action of using oil pressure to activate the afm that is failure prone. Having low oil pressure or inconsistent oil viscosity from dirty oil etc causes the lifters to hang up in between either mode and causes the tick. This makes me think that just disabling with software to prevent afm from activating should prevent failure really well. I unplugged my oil pressure sender when i got my truck until i could get a disabler and have since just been too lazy to buy it…. With no oil pressure reading to the ecu AFM is disabled.

It did fine and ran fine for 30k. It started to get a very light tap. Only I could hear it apparently. I went wild with full AFM/VVT delete. Used BTR 302 truck torque cam and a few other good parts. With parts on in and diablo it ran about the same other than cam signal. After a day on the dyno with HP tuners it feels like a damn hot rod. It runs and drives like a totally different vehicle. It would snatch a trailer out from under a load now. BTR claimed around 40/40 gain. Mine was closer to 20/60tq gain. Now I have to pull pan to delete that relief valve. Tuner said they have had huge oil pressure issues with that valve after delete sticking. Mehling says they cause oil consumption issues.

One thing not talked about much is that non-AFM lifters are also prone to failure! Over-time perhaps with less than optimal maintenance and or performance mods and aggressive driving, the clearance between lifters and lifter trays increases to the point that the roller/lifter can rotate from it's proper position enough to cause roller/cam wear and eventual failure. This could be a problem with any engine with roller cam followers. A concern I have with AFM disable is that over-time, could non-use cause varnish build up on the lifter internal sliding parts causing the lifter to jam in the collapsed position if it were to ever be re-activated even for a short period?

To disable the AFM (DOD) in the ecm by using HP Tuners does nothing to engine's inability to function. The engine by design are made to run on all 8 cylinders by the engineers of GM. You are thinking too hard about it. The afm coding for the 4 cylinder mode is an add on to ecm's software forced by the government. Its common sense how engines work. The Engineers brought on software to control engines, then governments brought on emissions, save gas ect... you know the deal. The springs, oil solenoids and valves in the valley cover are only activated by the ecm's software coding. Stopping the coding "Disable" in HP tuners you are just stopping the action of AFM. There is no need to buy a delete kit which is just a lifter kit. No such thing as a delete kit. Just removing parts and replacing with parts that already exist in other cars and truck/suv. All or most people doing the procedure are just modding the engine for more performance. If you use common sense the vehicles run great when in 8 but fail in v4. I agree with this. Those who remove lifters show the latch pin damage to the lifter's shelf and pins themselves. I don't see how stopping the switching events with a disabler (keeping the lifters static) could do anything but prolong their life. Not sure how you could blame "catastrophic damage" on keeping these lifters engaged like normal lifters. Stop AFM now and prolong your lifters would be the logical thing till proven otherwise

from what i've personally seen, its the springs. and no amount of turning off the AFM in the computer(s) is going to stop a mechanical failure from something used all the time with said feature off. best to just delete and be done with it.

From an engine purring on 8 cylinder. Also that feature 4 cylinder, has caused accelerating oil consumption. I have the Range override plugged into computer port.

I would vociferously argue that active fuel management is a step forward and engine design. It would be far more effective to operate the engine lean of peak on all eight cylinders and save more fuel without damaging the engine by shutting off four of the cylinders. Running an engine on 4 cylinders and having to push the other four cylinders around is not a way to save fuel. All it does is cause much more wear on the cylinders that are operating did relation to the cylinders that are not. You can't disable that system without any major issues, the problem with that is is that on these Gen4 engines the cylinders that are disabled, even when they're not disabled are operating at a different efficiencies than the other four cylinders so the engines not running right in the first place. I have no idea who thought of the idea of disabling for the cylinders on a V8 engine to save fuel, but they really should be made to marry my ex-wife. I don't even want that bastard dead. I want him to suffer for eternity! Just another stupid idea. But I might like to see is somebody put on some injectors, port injection only, get rid of the stupid GDI system that came out about 2014 or so. And try the 11 Port sprayer that came out on the 2005 Saturn 4 cylinder. I think that that could not only save fuel when it's running easy down the road way yeah it vaporizes fuel better because it's shooting through 11 ports instead of 2. It will give you so much better of a fuel burn that the engine may actually get better fuel mileage on all eight cylinders or at least as good as running the active fuel management. But I haven't seen anybody try that yet. It may be as simple as taking the caps off of the 11 port and put the 11 ports on the ends of the two Port injectors. Or just putting the different injectors on. The 2005 Saturn injectors are 12 ohm, I do not know what the ohms requirement is on the LS motor.

Common sense. I turn the DOD off all the time. The engine is made to run fine with it off or on ( until a lifter fails and one will with it on ). Think about it the factory turns it OFF more percent of the TIME than ON. The lifter can't stick down if it is not actuated. Now, they can fail other ways. The same as regular lifters.

My buddy just went through the failed lifter/bent pushrods/scored camshaft on his '99 Silverado 5.3 (his would be DFM not AFM). He luckily had the GM extended warranty and they replaced all his lifters, pushrods and installed a new cam. Funny thing happened: the jerky shifting and hunting engine (making up its mind how many cylinders to activate) is gone and it's running like it doesn't have DFM. I'm wondering if the dealer, who undoubtedly knows about the AFM/DFM issue (they had another truck in with the same problem at the same time) deleted the DFM either disabling the software or installing different lifters etc. It's so frustrating that this problem exists, and for so long, just to satisfy fuel economy requirements "on paper". It clearly doesn't do anything in the real world except cost the end consumer time, money and frustration. It's a really nice truck and until this happened, I was going to make one my next truck. Might have to look at F150's though I'm sure they have their issues too.

So my question is, what's the difference from a software delete or using an AFM disabler, or just doing it by putting the transmission into Manual mode, which can prevent it from using AFM, unless you put it into Manual and the 6th speed. Even says in the manual you can do that, at least for my 2012 Avalanche I've had since new and has 175K on it and "knock on wood" no engine issues.. Which I use manual mode as much as possible. How can making your truck stay in V8 mode all the time be a bad thing? Its a V8 engine, so what's wrong with using all 8 cylinders al the time? There have been many videos and reviews of the Range AFM disabler and using it for years, and no issues. So whos right and whos wrong. Them, or you? Google reviews alone has a 4.8 average review out of 5 for 930 reviews. That many people cant be wrong? US and Canada average reviews, KZbin videos are all showing good results years later. Are you saying they are wrong, or causing engine issue that will show up years later?

I think the general synopsis is that the lifters by design are prone to failure whether you delete them or not, but possibly sooner with all the swapping from v4 to v8. So disabling it electronically may allow you to get more life out of it prior to failure. I think if a lifter is stuck and you have damage , sure you might as well do the full delete while you have it apart, however , if you have had no issues, I do not think there is some mechanical threat added by deciding to use a range plug in device. I’m at 137k, 2014 sierra. Timely oil changes , no issues , that doesn’t mean it won’t happen …. But I have decided I’m going to buy a range and here’s why . I had my tranny rebuilt at 125k miles. Torque converter failure . Common obviously. Some say it is because of heat with the thermostat block not opening to the cooler until 194F… others say the torque converter doesn’t something special to prevent excessive vibration when cycling from v8 to v4 eventually leading to premature failure and the TQ coming apart and ruining the transmission. Both are right….. I’ve already put the GM TSB approved thermostat in my new tranny operating at 154F verses 194F . I bought a remand tranny from GM. No idea if it has a better torque converter or not… so I’ll assume not. By using the range plug in, I can keep my vehicle in V8 and prolong the life of my torque converter and ultimately the transmission. So that alone is a reason to do it…. Will my engine have a lifter failure eventually. It’s possible , but it probably happen anyway whether I disabled AFM or not .

@@danielsmith8659 Very true, I also think it maybe how people treat their trucks compared to others, or as simple as synthetic oil vs convectional. Ive been using synthetic for a couple decades now in all my vehicles. In Canada, we can get temps as low as -40 i the winter, to +40 in the summer. I like synthetic for winter due to it flowing better for cold engine starts. Am I wrong, who knows, IM not a mechanic. Ive also never been stranded on the side of the road or had engine issues for 20 year plus, so I must be doing something right. I do admit, adding the AFM disabler has done more than just removing the V4 shudder, etc. MY truck is more responsive, I dont have weird downshifts at low speeds, and I don't have excessive shifting either anymore, seems to want to stay in gear more. When you commute the same places for years you know how you vehicle drives. And the small annoyances I had with the AFM shift when I forgot to put it into M mode, are gone, as well as the weird downshifts I used to have when stopping for red lights at certain speeds. Live in a city with a lot of hills as well and not having V4 kick in is great as you come out of the hill. Is that science, or proof, or a fact. Nope, just me observing something from a truck Ive owned 10.5 years. Maybe having the AFM diabler is redundant, since I keep up on all fluid flushes and oil changes, and thats why Im having good luck with my truck. But that aside, the benefits of a better throttle response, less and better shifting, and not having to put it into M every time I drive, are all a plus for me
