Wonder Woman wasn't perfect. It was very good. Not only was it the first successful female led superhero movie, but it remains the only part of the DCEU with an overwhelmingly positive critical response.
But Wonder Woman had its faults and none were more pronounced than the film's villain, Ares.
So in part one of a two part series centered around fixing the ending of Wonder Woman, I look at how the God of War could both be present in the universe and absent from World War 1.
And here is the link to Part 2, Paging Doctor Poison.

@NandovMovies
@NandovMovies 6 жыл бұрын
It blew my mind when we say him in the flashback with the mustache. Mustaches are the DCEU's Kryptonite.
@carrastealth
@carrastealth 5 жыл бұрын
That's because it isn't. As I always kind of took his 'mustached' form when he was wounded, as his 'human' form or appearance as opposed to his God one. Maybe that would hit home better if when he went "God Mode" we only saw black underneath the helmet and red glowing eyes. Then it would signify the 'non-threatening human' form is his mask. Then again, I try not to judge how deadly someone is by their mustache. I liked him as the Calm, Cool, Collected, "been there" Ares. His entire demeanor and speech to Diana works because of all that. And I would have preferred that than the usual 'sexy chiseled" pick. Ares should look the senior and older and wiser to Diana, particularly it's what makes his speech hit home the hardest, and it's a subverted expectation I enjoyed. Seeing his 'true form' in "God Mode" would be unnecessary, at least for the conversation and Diana being 'wrong'. We can look forward to it in a future film, but here, less is definitely more, and I think Professor Lupin captures that very well. If his human form is more 'muted' less ostentatious and more 'non-threatening' than his God form than so be it :)

Good choice for the actor, excellent plot. Most of the dialog was brilliant, but I think there might be a smidge too much of it, considering it is mostly exposition. I would have preferred this version. WW is almost brilliant until the Ares reveal, and pretty average after that. If Ares is to be in the movie at all, this would be the way.

This made my day. There should always be a turning point in a superhero movie where the protagonist realizes the truth and kind of has to understand that the world is different than the one seen from their perspective. Just like the scene in spider-man 2 when peter lets his glasses fall and clenches his fists. Great work Nando!

I also think that Ares didn't need to have a physical form. Because he was a god, he shouldn't have been shown explicitly with all the armor. It should have been more of a concept and Diana should have fought against the war not some definitive side. They could use Ares in later movies to turn things upside down similar to the dark knight where batman didn't need to physically defeat joker but defeat his ideology.

While you're right that killing Ares knocked the biggest bad off Wonder Woman's Rogues Bench, there are still quite a few characters that could be good antagonists. Apollo could still be alive (surviving Ares), and he's extremely powerful and more nuanced a character in the comics. He's as powerful as Ares, but smarter. Circe is almost certainly still alive, and has magical powers to perhaps rival Dr. Strange, but with the nice connection to Greek mythology. Also, Ares had children: Deimos, Phobos, Eris, Thrax, and Lycus could all continue the story from the previous movie. That said, you're right that the climax of the movie should have been that Diana discovers that acts of selfishness and brutality need not be inspired by deities of war, but can be inherent to our nature as human beings when put in terrible situations or when raised in unhealthy cultures.
@NandovMovies
@NandovMovies 6 жыл бұрын

First Name It was an ironic type of choice. It subverts the thinking that a minister who is advocating the idea of a peace and people together, is the one who is manipulating the war and heightens the tension. It could be seen as a commentary as politicians in a sense. Not to mention the idea that a man who is supposed to represent the civilized is actually a man who is pushing the savagery of man. That was one of the best ideas of the movie to be honest to have Ares be the skinny, geeky, unnoticeable minister of peace as opposed to someone we hadn't relatively seen or heard of until the third act.

I have a Thor Ragnorak fix I wanted to pitch you: While the comedy is great, the one good thing about the previous Thor movies (Loki & his story) are ruined - cast aside as a joke. Hela falls a little flat too, while the actress killed the role, she spends her time playing off characters we don’t care about. My fix is replace Skurge with Loki. Loki can still use the cube to force project across the universe & talk with Thor but now we have a serious character who’s internal conflict we care about. Skurge has this conflict (help Hela or not) but frankly, who cares? Hela can be Loki’s dark mirror, showing him what he could end up as. And her return can be HIS fault, he had to dig into Odin’s past as king. (Not stage a play with Matt Damon.) He and Thor could both have had Ragnorak dreams, except Loki’s had a raven who fed him secrets - Hela. Loki shows Thor the mural of Odin’s past and says Hela has been giving him info on the Infinity Stones - Loki should be terrified Thanos is coming after him post-Avengers 1 & Thor would have SOME understanding of plan, he also went looking for the stones. Loki could try to save the warriors three, giving them a meaningful death. Loki should also be the one with the plan to cause Ragnorak - he is the god of mischief after all. In the third act, when all hope is lost Loki and Thor realize there no way to beat Hela. Loki asks how Thor got his powers back. ‘Father I saw him in a dream’ Loki realizes the dream of Ragnorak were not omens or Hela manipulating him... Thor had those dreams to, Odin must have been trying to show them & the Raven was Hela slipping through. Loki causes Ragnorak as Thor always feared but with his help. Loki sees he should have trusted Odin more, the way Thor did. Thor sees he should have trusted Odin less, and sometimes Loki’s way is the only way to win. (Love your videos, would love to hear your thoughts!)

@bruce221
@bruce221 5 жыл бұрын
I’d be 100% cool with it. I’d actually love it. I have expanded on this and added a little bit of Loki dialogue in Infinity War that would connect with it. If we have Loki use the cube to force-project to talk with Thor in Ragnarok, he can use the cube to be a foil for Thanos in Infinity war. Here goes: IW opening goes the same but as Thanos crushes the cube, Loki’s illusion magic washes over it revealing the Casket of Jotunheim. It explodes in ice, freezing Thanos & friends. Loki rushes to Heimdall, having him drink Nymphs Milk from a small vial on his necklace. “It’ll restore your strength.” Loki says before chucking the necklace over to the bound Thor, the necklace magical wraps around Thor’s neck but he can’t drink it yet. “My strength isn’t enough to beat them.” -H “No, but it’ll buy me time.” -L. Corvus Glave breaks free of the ice as he was behind the big guy. CG & H fight while Loki reveals the REAL cube and painstakingly opens a portal under Hulk, sending him to Dr. Strange. Loki knows strange has the time stone since they met & showing the Big Bad of Avengers 1 struggle to use one infinity stone makes Thanos all the more bad ass for using 6. After Hulk, Loki begins to open a portal under Thor but CG disarms Heimdall & wounds him. Heimdall goes for a grabble, stalling for time but CG (not wanting Thor to escape) throw his glaive at the Infinity Gauntlet. This breaks enough ice for Thanos to let off a power stone wave, shattering all the ice. Ebony maw uses telekinesis to grab Thor as he was about to fall throw Lokis portal. A beam of purple energy violently stokes Loki sending him flying backwards, dropping the cube & shutting the portal. Now, we get the big change. Thanos is great BECAUSE of his relationship to our heroes. He respects Stark, sympathizes with Wanda, love Gamora, is disappointed Peter hesitates to make the hard call to kill Gamora but the one character he has a connection w/ from Avengers one (Loki) gets no such moment. So we are gonna give him that. Thanos kills Heimdall same as in the movie & collects the Space Stone. “No other being has ever wielded two stones,” Maw says. But Thanos corrects him. “Not like this, but there was one who posed two stones at once before... Loki Laufeyson, it was probably the closest to a real god you ever got.” “Odinson” Loki says straining as he clutches his wound. “ do you know why boy I would bestow such gifts to you? Why I’d send you to earth? Knowing I or any of my children would be better suited for the job?” Thanos takes a knee, almost sympathetic near the dying Loki. “In all this time, as I’ve quested for the stones. You Loki, were my moment of doubt. People called me mad, said my plan to save the universe was genocide. My resolve was unshaken but I thought maybe they had a point. Maybe my plan was horrifying, to some cosmic force, some god or gods who would show their face as soon as I moved after the stones. You were bait, to see what divine protectors of the universe would emerge to stop me. And what did? Nothing, no gods and great force from the beyond. No, just a few humans trying to save their own dying world. That’s what you helped show me Loki. There are no gods who set right & wrong in this universe. There’s only us, only our will to make this universe better.” Loki can spit out “you will never be a god.” But Thanos is done. As he stands up, “any last words.” Loki looks past Thanos to Thor with a smile, “I thought he’d be taller.” (This will make sense later.) Thanos, puzzled by the comment but realizing it may be code say “No more tricks. No more... (looks at Maw) illusions.” Maw waves his hand dismissing this illusion version of Loki (because of course it is) revealing the real Loki off to Thanos’ right. “And no more resurrections.” He pulls Loki to him with the space stone and chokes him to death as he walks back to his crew, dropping the dead god of mischief in front of Thor. The rest of the movie goes the same except Thor goes the Nidavelir BECAUSE of Loki’s last words. (Thor can explain to Rocket “I thought he’d be taller,” was Thor’s reaction to meeting the Dwarf king as a child. It’s the type of political gaffe a young Thor would make & Loki would hold over his head for years to come.) When Thor gets there the mold for Jarnbjorn (aka Stormbreaker) a axe that can cut through ANYTHING is already cast because Odin (aka Loki between Thor 2 & 3) commissioned it. Loki in mythology tricks the Dwarfs into forging some of Asgard’s most powerful weapons, including Thor’s hammer. So what does this give us? 1. An answer to why Thanos took so long to go after the stones, he knows someone will try to stop him. 2. A more satisfying send-off for Loki. 3. Loki using the cube, albeit painfully, showing how GD powerful Thanos is. 4. The god of tricks using EVERY trick he has and failing against our new Big Bag (Casket, Cube, Healing Potions, Illusions, Tricks/coded messages, warning the Avengers) 5. A nod to mythology in Loki’s involvement in crafting a weapon for Thor. 6. Loki fans get a “fuck yeah!” moment when said axe lands in Thanos’ chest, making Loki’s dying words one last trick, that almost takes down the mad titan.

I apologize if you said this already but I'd give Loki's role as Thor's ally in the actual film to someone like Heimdall. Idris wanted and deserves a bigger part for the character and it'd be good to expand on their camaraderie before Thanos impales him in Infinity War

You just earned a subscription from me. I'm glad to see a video where someone points out how the final act of this movie was weak sauce in what was before that a strong movie. Half the people I've spoken to look at me like I've grown a 2nd head if I said I didn't like the ending. How dare I not love every second of this movie?! Your idea for an ending would have been way more powerful and left more room for future stories. I can't wait to see part 2!

I really enjoyed this. some of the dialogue reminded me of some of the stuff from your typical Lucifer character from a few tv shows/movies about the judeochristian god, which I dig! I like that kinda grey morality among gods stuff. You should write your own tv/film some day. i bet it would be quality. :) keep up the good work!

How would I end this version? Fighting Ares the alternative: Wonder Woman would fight Aries with rage but upon this Rage Aries grows stronger. Wonder Woman must use love and the Amazons power to stop Steve Trevor from killing Dr. Poison. Thus weakening Aries and realizing that the armistice is signed and the war over, disappears warning Diana that he will return with the next world conflict (referring to ww2) End of movie we get a speech, showing the end of war celebrations, however the following shot shows ww2, Korean War, Vietnam, Cold War tensions, and then we see Diana fighting in those wars

I really liked your rewrite! Gives Dianas story much more of a personal edge to it! May I suggest that Ares greets her by saying something along the lines of "Killing one man is easier to start a war than to end one", since it's a historical setpiece it would be fun to give a wink to the prelude to the war ;)

You hit the nail on the head in what was my biggest gripe of the film as soon as I walked out of the theater. Lots of people have complained about the 3rd act, but it is usually about the fight and the CG completely ignoring how the strong themes of the film were just fumbled at the end and really undercut what could have elevated it to great. Also, you did a pretty strong rewrite of how the scene could have played out, not just in getting the broad strokes, but I could see it basically be put in the movie as is and it would still work. Really interested in where part 2 goes because personally, I thought the chemical attack would play a bigger role in the finale due to it seeming like the most atrocious part of war and why I figured they chose WWI, but they kind of painted poison as a victim to be for some reason instead of making her at least answer for her crimes against humanity. I think even Diana talking to Poison and trying to make her have a change of heart to help humanity with her talents could have been a better change. Diana's lesson should have been that fighting is sometimes needed but fighting to end fighting isn't always the answer and to help humanity from themselves, maybe she should rely on what may be her greatest strength, her compassion.

1. This is a great cast change. 2. This is great script change. This is actually terrific - and would have made the film better. She is not fighting because she is taking sides.
