Black Panther is quickly becoming one of the most successful movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it deserves it. Black Panther is great.
But I'm not sure that it's perfect.
I think there are a couple of big issues near the end of the film that can all be mitigated by introducing one new line of dialogue much earlier. Here is what I mean.

You are absolutely right. I still prefer what Cole and Coogler presented in having the Black Panther and Golden Jaguar fight on the Underground Railroad. I also enjoyed Okoye ending the final fight with W’Kabi once the American Influence was removed. I enjoyed the movie and I enjoy all of your videos. Great perspectives worth mentioning.

This is basically what they did in Homecoming. Spiderman's new suit was just way too OP. Stripping him off of all that crazy tech before the finale really made the final action scenes more visceral and awesome. This entire video perfectly addresses the most important fix that Black Panther needed.

Sreehari except there was barley a final fight in Spiderman Homecoming. Both movies were similar in that the CGI took away something from the experience. The flashing lights on the plane made it difficult to see what was going on. Both were disappointing final fights IMO.

nlg070301 homecoming's final fight was less direct though, vulture was trying to get out with lots of stuff and Peter was trying to stop him. The stuff on the plane is supposed to be disorienting, because Peter is disoriented. By the end it was just who can survive the brawl long enough to escape.

Absolutely agree, as Stark said in spiderman homecoming: "If you're nothing without the suit (or the panther powers in this case), then you shouldn't have it." Imo they messed up the Hero's redemption arc, it was evident that he lost to killmonger in terms of combat skills, in the final fight he should've showed us why he deserves the mantle of black panther, both as a king, as you've mentioned, and a brilliant man just as he was in the comics
@teddybruscie
@teddybruscie 6 жыл бұрын
Zhong Sun Yong Just add to what you said. Alot of people forget that Stark learmed that ideal from Captain America back when he asked Tony who was he without the suit. Stark later on learned that he had to be Ironman even more without the suit and he passed that on to Parker. Consequently, T'Challa has learned through his interactions with the Avengers that the world is catching and he can't be Black Panther to just Wakanda, he has to make peace outside of Wakanda cause sooner or later, they're gonna find out about Wakanda and Wakanda is going to get caught with their pants down.
@zhongsunyong8955
@zhongsunyong8955 6 жыл бұрын
teddybruscie I'd actually argue that Stark learned that the hard way when he was unable to use his suit in iron man 3. Where he had a panic attack when he felt so helpless, in which the kid reminded him that Stark was the one that built the suit in the 1st place. Iron man 3 was a pretty meh movie, but I really love the scene when he Macgyver-ed the shit out of household appliances to infiltrate the "Mandarin's mansion" Black panther was a very ideals-centric movie. The final standoff should've been a war of words and ideals to establish who would best lead Wakanda
@teddybruscie
@teddybruscie 6 жыл бұрын
Zhong Sun Yong He definitely learned it the hard way. But I'm sure he heard Steve in the back of his head like, "told you you was bitch without that suit." Lol But yea Black Panther is an action movie. I don't think a speach at the end would be acceptable as an ending. The Villian has to either be killed or captured. Those are the action movie rules.

Shadow physics could be a good plot device in the sequel. Imagine Shuri plans to push wakanda's medical tech even further than it already goes by resurrecting a dead body, this creates a schism between wakandas futuristic and traditional sides. She tries to use klaue's body as a guinea pig, converting his body into sound waves and using a supercomputer to reconstruct his brain. Klaue then escapes in the sound body and begins to wreak havoc.

Yea I think several people mentioned how anti climatic it was to have two seemingly invincible people pounding on each other. If they wanted to use the same scenes they should have shown the weaknesses the suit has in the comics clearly before hand. Anything moving too fast is nullified but someone with their strength if they stabbed hard while slow enough can get through the armor. Also a man of steel necksnap could work. Idk they made vibranium a bit of a catch 22 master of all, they should have let us feel like someone wearing the suit isn't invincible and it still takes the black panther to make it what it is

Deconstruction of the super theme is heavily used in the MCU; Iron Man 3, Thor, Avengers and Spiderman for example. Black Panther is INVINCIBLE and thus needs to be outgunned/outsmarted so the villain can have a chance. When he was up in the mountains, he shouldn't have got his suit back until the end, he should have fought the baddies without his armor, when he finally stops the blue asshole tribe with the Ape Gang(fucking love those veggie lovers) Shuri could have given him his old suit back, this would have allowed him fight a superior version of himself in an inferior state but still come on top with a mcguffin, like metro stabilizers or the shadow physics you mentioned.

Yeah but in the MCU Wakanda isn't an isolationist country. This is shown in CIVIL WAR. T'chala's Father dies in a UN meeting. isolationists usually attend those meetings.
@user-gk7nr6vn7g
@user-gk7nr6vn7g 5 жыл бұрын
I think it was more symbolic than technical. T'Challa just wanted to get his message out in the most efficient way possible. Though the movie doesn't show him talking to his own nation, something along those lines is implied as he talks to his younger sister and later to the entire UN, who weren't fully ready for what he had to say. Either way, he's shaking things up, and that's obvious from the final shot of the the throne room where all tribes (even Jabari) are assembled, ready to start anew.
@user-gk7nr6vn7g
@user-gk7nr6vn7g 5 жыл бұрын
I think it also gives a satisfying arc for T'Challa to return to the setting where his father was murdered and he started his journey, right after he visited where his uncle was killed and Killmonger started his own. That was more confusing than it needed to be.

@saidmarin4101
@saidmarin4101 6 жыл бұрын
Baboonbootymeat Yeah, because gross revenue = good movie. Those a Transformer movies sure are masterpieces. Besides the good reviews point is quite nuanced. Look up the reviews, they all talk about how the message of the movie is great and the cultural impact of it. Non actually praise how the message is relayed, which is what the movie is supposed to do. Also, the only reason why Killmonger is praised as such a different villain for the MCU is due to how lackluster MCU villains tend to be. Most are just generic mustache twirling villains. Even Killmonger’s methods are too morally objectable for you to take his point of view seriously. I’m not saying MCU movies are “bad”, but Black Panther is just as formulaic. Which is a shame, since GotG 2 and Thor:Raknarok where sort of breaking that trend.
@taylormadealpha
@taylormadealpha 6 жыл бұрын
I've seen the movie3 times now and the film is definitely good and Jordan was a hell of a villian in Killmonger. The point the man was making about revenue has to be taken into consideration. 5 weeks out still atop the bo. I'd b willing to wager the transformers films did not come close to this. It means people are still showing up to see a good movie even though yes, the final fight sequence was so so and the first was ok.

I wasn’t too big of a fan of the kinetic suit, Black Panthers fight choreography was really great in Civil War and even during the convoy ambush in this movie! So a more physical final battle would have been great. With your shadow physics proposal and the stakes being even, makes it even better. Also I thought I was the only one who felt a T’Challa speech was missing! In the trailer where he’s walking toward Killmonger with his hands out, I thought it was gonna be there for sure. Anywho the movie was great but I do share the same criticisms as you. Your proposals were great and I look forward to the next video!

What I love about this channel is that I’ve never once heard you express an opinion I have too, but it’s always because it’s something I hadn’t noticed or thought of. I don’t love the idea of a magic bomb that renders vibranium useless, just like I didn’t love it when they introduced the weird vibranium disruptors (why else would Shuri have mentioned it with closeups in the second act?). It’s a bit too clean and obvious. But that being said, the idea that they have to fight in front of Wakanda, for Wakanda? Brilliant. Of course they shouldn’t be in the mines. Thematically, it makes nowhere near as much sense. I also love how it empowers the Wakandan people. One of my minor gripes with the movie was how stupid it made these advanced people look by how they put up no fight to Killmonger’s regime. Of course this is about the ideas of tradition/innovation the movie plays with, but it still didn’t sit well with me. If they learned from that experience and threw down their weapons for Killmonger because T’challa proved himself king in more than just combat? That would have been amazing. Also, who doesn’t need a new inspirational speech to add to their collection?

I think it would be cool if T'Challa had been out of action for longer than he was, and then Killmonger had designed a new version of the black panther suit (Maybe even incorporate that badass mask from earlier in the movie into it ) so that he didn't look exactly the same as T'Challa during their fight (different colour highlights doesn't cut it)

Vibranium is just a bit of sci-fi handwaving - in a long tradition of sci-fi handwaving. Your decision to neutralize the armor in an open fashion is a good observation. The one flaw that isn't mentioned is when Shuri makes a half-joking challenge to point out the ridiculousness of deciding leadership in such an advanced technological state by solo combat. "Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony" to paraphrase Monty Python. That gets all swept under at the end. It also shows how despite all of the advances granted by their isolation and technology, Wakanda has some weird limiting legacies from their traditions. Great job - it would be interesting to learn if this type of discussion actually occurs between the producers and directors.

Great and reasonable case! While I enjoy big, CGI spectacles in these kinds of movies, I tend to admire dialogue and character building moments more. Because if you can flesh out the characters and serve their case to us to understand why they do what they do, and create a philosophical conflict with words, then the physical conflicts and consequences have a heavier impact. (Edited part) And I heard once that the story shouldn't serve the effects; or CGI, the effects should serve the story.

Luke Bennet what's funny is that everything you said is my argument for the movie's actual final battle. I think that the CGI looked visually "cool" and stylistic, especially for younger audiences and those who appreciate the art of the comics. I also think that the final scene had a lot of solid fight choreography, while still hitting the emotional beats to allow for character development.

I think its a very meh movie. And for that I have been called racist. That's the sad affair of the world now, where people who are actually giving preferential treatment and standards (ie racism) are the ones in power and telling people what they have to like. The reason I didn't like it much, is because it was very linear. All the political bits were too simple and uninteresting, so the movie had to stand on its action scenes. And the action scenes were far too absent, and in general not very well done. One part which I think they should have changed was to make Killmonger the son of the eldest born prince, basically meaning he is the next in-line to succeed the throne. Thus, making T'Challa (his cousin) the illegitimate king. That would've been a much needed layer to the film. Also, making T'Challa excellent in some manner was sorely needed. He wasn't the smartest. He wasn't the strongest. What does that leave us with, him simply being the wealthiest? Yikes. So they should've had him with a group of M'Baku's men, as a team, which against incredible odds managing to stop the ex-vasion and securing weapons and an audience with his people. All before the major battle. Basically they needed to show what T'Challa excelled at was being the best leader. And Gold Jaguar would've been left only to the device of threats to kill his own people if they didn't obey him, and attack T'Challa. We could've cemented the threat if his people were wearing Vibranium armour, and the Gold Jaguar had one of the beads which would cause it to explode and kill the wearer, a plot point which could've been introduced in the Korean scene with Shuri destroying the Vibranium armour, so to remove evidence from the street (like Batman did in The Dark Knight). There were so many little snippets which could've added weight and layer to the movie, and they were not there. It missed out on too many opportunities simply because the writers and directors were not focusing on the usual points, but other unrelated things. In the screening, I saw several people sleeping and many bored. These people did not go to the movie to see how great black people and black culture is, they didn't go to see propaganda. Instead they went to see a Marvel Film, one that is an Action Film which has sprinkles of comedy and a more mature undertone of drama. Which is a shame, compare to the original Iron Man movie which had a much smaller budget, less content to refer backwards to, and far less technology in terms of visuals. However, it is head and neck above Black Panther because they focussed on what made the movie great back 10 years ago, here it is not replicated and that's a shame.

Dark Sev. I think of Bruce as more of a physicist. That's just my head cannon though, but in my mind: The world's best physicist: Banner Best engineers: Shuri, Stark, Rocket (Forge) Best chemist: Pym, Bill Foster Best geneticist: Xavier, and Macoy (neither in the MCU) Best surgeon: Strange -Best all of the above plus astrophysicist: t'challa (plus Richards and Doom) ...spidey's A genius level chemist geneticist and physicist too but hasn't studied as hard as the rest of them

you bring up some really smart points here that I think would really raise this movie to a legendary status. BUT I think that introducing shadow physics in that way opens up a whole lot of doors and would seem like a pretty obvious (to the audience) chekhov's gun type situation if it's introduced at the beginning, with all the extra exposition it needs to make sense, and only shows up again at the very end. I've only seen the movie once, so forgive me if I have anything here mistaken, but I think a better solution would be to make that EMP using the same technology that is used in the mines on the train tracks. It's already referenced much more casually, it doesn't open the whole can of worms that shadow physics does while still serving the same purpose for your new ending, and it fits right in with everything else you already said. Again, awesome video! This was just one little thing that stuck out to me.

I'm curious if maybe the reason why they never brought up shadow physics is because they didn't want it to feel like a MacGuffin. Shadow Physicals seems like a cool way to further explore Wakanda and the futuristic african culture of the country. Perhaps they're saving it for a different movie in order to give the concept proper breathing room and really flesh out the idea. Either way I would love for them to bring it up sometime ^^

My money is on Marvel thinking A) Shadow Physics is kinda nebulous and hard to understand B) Shadow Physics is based on magic and it may take away from the sci fi elements of Wakandan technology C) Maybe they're saving it?

The best part about this new ending is that they could still have Erik seeing the sunset and saying that infamous “bury me in the ocean” quote. It is finally T’challa who delivers the final blow and as the nation’s tribes surround the two adversaries they talk and slowly part to give Erik his dying wish of seeing the horizon his father talked about. And then when T’challa offers a hand to amend Erik and let him see what it really means to be wakandan he says the famous quote

I totally agree. They really missed a chance to make this great movie a superb movie. The changes you talked about would have added that extra character spice that would elevated the movie and helped it resonate with audiences through character, which is way more important than gadgets and suits. (Gadgets and super suits are still cool though). He's gotta be a person, not a costume.

Aggggggh This just makes me wish the movie was better even more. I hate the end battle with BP and Killmonger in the train scene so much. Not much, he's still the same good dude he was before he was king, it's like Killmonger didn't even happen. In fact it was more KIllmonger's movie than his. @NandovMovies

The end with the sunset was great. I could see it going like this: Big fight. T'Challa wins and stabs Killmonger. Killmonger says he wants to see the Wakandan sunset before he dies. T'Challa carries him to the cliff and they watch it together. It would be very sweet. T'Challa would take him to the cliffs in front of all of Wakanda. And the image of T'Challa carrying Killmonger would mirror Killmonger picking up T'Challa before throwing him over the waterfall. Killmonger doesn't care about Wakanda and will kill its king to get what he wants. T'Challa cares so much about Wakanda that he is willing to forgive Killmonger and grant him this last request as a Wakandan.

You make some very good points, but there where a few things I disagree with. First, there didn't need to be a huge Independence Day style speech for two reasons. The in universe reason is basically most people who weren't still on T'Challas side only followed Erik because he had the throne(with the exception of w'kabe, who was following Erik because he killed Klaue when both T'Challa and T'chaka failed to), so once T'Challa won the challenge which technically never ended, everyone would follow him without question. The real life reason is we saw whatkind of king and manT'Challa is throughout the movie. Begging M'Baku to forfeit even though it would have been easier to kill him and possibly would have stopped him from challenging him in the future, honoring Erik's right to challenge the throne when everyone even the queen told him not to, showing killmonger the beauty of the Wakandan sunset and offering to save him even after he tried to kill him and his family and tried to start a global race (and class) war. Figuring out what kind of man he is wasn't his journey in the film, he had already decided that while growing up to be king. His journey was more about isolationism Vs using Wakandan resources to help people. T'Chaka killed his own brother to keep Wakanda isolated, where as killmonger tried to use Wakandan weaponry to put the oppressed people on top. T'Challas journey was more about finding a middle way, help people while remaining true to Wakanda's peaceful ways. My other disagreement is a little more personal opinion. I don't really get why people hate on CGI so much. Sure if done badly it can distract from the film, but when done well it allows filmmakers to shoot impossible scenes, and black panthers CGI is absolutely amazing in my opinion. Like I said, you made some excellent points, I just felt like throwing in my two cents. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one. WAKANDA FOREVER!

I actually really liked this film. Especially the characters. But for me the only aspect that was pretty average was the action. My favorite action scene in the movie was the first one wherein T'Challa is rescuing Nakia. It plays really well with his stealthy, no bullshit fighting style. But it was super quick. The idea you had with Ip Man style fight scene with Wakabi's clan could've really been amazing. Just to show the martial arts prowess of the Panther. I wish I could touch on everything you said but I don't write comments often. This is the only channel where I feel comfortable commenting. Love your videos man... Exodus MC yes as far as action goes more was to be desired. Even after watching Infinity War TChalla was not in the most impressive action sequences. Jason Taylor That is a really good point that I agree with. I often noticed my friends referring to this movie as 'Wakanda' and not as 'Black Panther' so I think that really goes to show how much Wakanda felt like a real lived in place and not so much just another setting. To touch on the political thriller point. I believe Captain America Winter Soldier was also referred to as a spy/political thriller as well and to me that was some of the best action in the MCU hands down and I still love it to this day. No fancy lasers, or super powers (not knocking other action sequences that use this) just pure hand to hand combat which was so enjoyable to watch. I forgot the reason why I mentioned this 😂😂 but I hope you gain the gist of my reply Side note: also agree on the lack of Black Panther in Infinity War

It wasn't until you mentioned the CGI when I realised what it was I didn't like. It's overdone and I felt too detached from the characters. You did a better job at articulating this issue than I have. I'm fine with bombastic CGI spectacle, but while that's great in Doctor Strange or Thor Ragnarok, it was really the wrong direction for Black Panther's setting and power set. I just can't stop imagining a version of Black Panther with action more along the lines of Winter Soldier and Civil War. But I do disagree on a couple of things. First, I think a big part of the Wakanda aesthetic was taking things that are usually portrayed as primitive like swords and spears and instead making them highly advanced, and depowering Vibranium would've taken that away. And second, I think Everett was more important than you give him credit for, as he symbolized Wakanda and the outside world being able to work together. But you're right that his part in the climax was too removed from the rest of the action. And lastly, there's no need to introduce Shadow Physics to neutralize Vibranium, because it's already established that sonic waves can do just that. So here's what I think. Early on, you set up that Shuri uses a drone to maintain her sonic emitters, and she controls the drone with her hologram cockpit thing. When we get to the finale, there are two changes. First, Shuri isn't able to get her hands on her updated suit, but is able to get T'challa his old suit, meaning for the final fight he has a suit, but not the energy blast power. And second, Everett's role is changed from shooting down transport ships to piloting Shuri's drone to bring a sonic emitter to the surface and then keep it aimed at Killmonger to depower his suit. The moment where Killmonger is about to kill Shuri could be changed so that instead of T'challa knocking him down the hole to save her, Everett's drone pops out of the hole and blasts him with sonic waves. Then you can have Shuri and Nakia keeping Killmonger in check for a while, until Killmonger throws a spear at the drone and destroys it. Finally, T'challa jumps in to take on Killmonger 1 on 1 in front of everyone like you suggested. Maybe Black Panther gets his helmet knocked off at some point, both as a callback to Shuri ridiculing his suit's helmet, and so the people of Wakanda can see his face as he takes down Killmonger. Anyway, probably some holes in this idea, but I just threw it together on the spot.
