Hi Mai. I don't have any kids but a lot of my friends do. Hearing them talk about stuff. My input is keep it at 3 kids. If you have a 4th kid, I'd be very happy for you and your family. The cost of living, college, braces, medical insurance, etc, etc. This is just my two cents. In no way am I judging or trying to tell you how to run your life by any means. LOVE this video. All your videos are INCREDIBLE. All the very best. God bless you and your family.

For your toaster oven pan try Easy off oven cleaner that does not need heat. Make sure you buy the one that does not need heat. Spray it on & leave it for 10-15 minutes and then everything will just wipe away so easily. I use it on top of my stove for spill overs etc. A housekeeper showed me that trick. Great idea taking away the kids toys. You teach them how to treat you (and their stuff). Id say depending on age, probably keep their toy room clean 3-5 days, earn a few back, continue to keep clean 3 more days, earn few more, etc etc.
@jennw8923 жыл бұрын
Small toy bins: I'd allow one "bin" at a time. Once they can play/pick up one bin for a while, I'd add a second...If two gets to be too much, move back down to one bin until they get the hang of it. I'd then SLOWLY introduce more. You can always swap bins out every few weeks during the process so they don't get tired of what they're playing with!

The more children we had, the easier life got. They entertained each other, played with each other etc Although I spent a lot of quality one on one with them, they didnt NEED my undivided attention. They had each other. 7 children was easier than 3 for sure. My oldest was only 10 when the 7th was born so it wasnt as if the older took CARE of the younger.

100% true. I am the 3rd oldest out of 6 kids. When I was 7 years old, I took care of my 5th newborn sister. Then when I was 10 years old, I took care of my last sister. I am now 23 years old and I'm extremely close to my youngest sisters and will always be their best friends.

I completely agree with this! We have 5 boys. When we had just 3, 3 and under, it was much more stressful. Now that our oldest is 8 it’s such a big difference! It’s busier with more kids, but now they can help and play with each other more.

Growing up if my mom had to take toys it was a 3 weeks non-negotiable, week 4 was assess the situation on how things have been kept (tidy or still messy) then would give them back week 4 or another 3 week imprisonment lol. If the same type of toys had to be taken away 3 times they got donated (I only ever made it to that once but I learned my lesson… now I’m a clean freak lol).

I made it a habit of having my son clean up his toys every evening at age 3 and onward. Like, we would eat dinner, then was cleanup time, then getting ready for bed and finally we'd cuddle and read a book. It helped tremendously to have him help with his toys (and later having him do it himself). I also made sure that each night when he got dressed for bed he would throw his clothes in the laundry. For snacks it was usually carrots and apples, so not so many crumbs around. But then again my son didn't really have an issue witu it, so i was fortunate. 😅

I was all about "logical consequences" when first round of kids were growing up. I think you made a good decision to remove the toys they aren't caring for. I'd vote for a week before reintroducing one bin. If they can handle that for a week, introduce the next bin. You are a wise mother.

I would present the messy toys as a problem to your boys that they have to solve (they might need guidance). Then write a plan together and come up with consequences together if the plan isn’t followed. I often do some dodgy illustrations for kids who can’t read yet - or even better they can draw pictures that match the plan. For example they might want a pack up song, or a timer, and they might agree that if they don’t pack up more than 1 day in a week, they lose the toys for a week. I think you will be pleasantly surprised with their ideas. I’m a teacher and kids often come up with stricter plans than I ever would - but they follow them because it was their idea!

The study about four kids- I think it’s because mothers have the oldest help out (depending on the age gap). I’m the second oldest out of five and my parents always had me watch over my sibling haha! Toys- if they play with the toys that are left in the playroom and they pick up after themselves for a few days straight give them only one bin. If they continue to clean up after themselves then give them another bin and so on. If they don’t take them back.. that’s my guess haha.

Suggestion for Mai - When you go to purchase paint for the kids' rooms and common areas, be advised that there ARE paints that are designed to be more resistant to wear and tear and staining. (mainly preventing staining of the paint for easier cleaning). Be sure to ask a paint pro which types are currently available and go from there.

hot cleaning tip - I've found that making a paste w/ baking soda, lemon juice and water is the BEST thing for getting caked on food stains from my oven! I have a feeling it would work for your toaster oven too. Just let it sit for at least 30 minutes and then use the scrub daddy (or a sponge that you are okay to part with, because it will be pretty gross lol)

Being the 3rd oldest of 6 kids. I would say it is less stressful because we tend to buddy up and often the older kids are sorta like mini moms or nannies. In fact, I would say the most stressful homes I went to from sleepovers were with three kids. But most of them were not close in age so two kids would love each other and the youngest would be a loner. Maybe my family was different because my mom spaced us out by three years at the max so no one felt left out.

My mum took away toys when things got too messy. My younger sister was the messy one and I was the clean one. I used to keep my room clean and she kept hers messy. We used to share a play room and it always felt like a losing battle against her to keep it clean. When my mum used to take away my favourite toys because my sister hadn’t tidied them away, it felt like I was being punished as well for my sisters crimes. Even as an adult I’m still bitter about it… maybe something for you to think about when trying to find the right balance between punishment and reward. It’s a near impossible task.

I'm on baby number 5. I can't say 4 were less stressful because 3 and 4 were twins. I can say I'm the most calm about baby number 5 though, maybe because it's not twins again, haha. I wouldnt say my oldest takes care of the younger but as she gets older ( she's 7 now) she is so helpful which really makes a difference.
@licaleu57843 жыл бұрын
In terms of your question: make clear why you take the small toys away and explain exactly what the kids have to do to get them back. It must be realistic and achievable. "Clean up all the toys of the floor before you go to bed" start small to give the "slob" a chance to find motivation by success. You can also work with a sticker plan and remind them how often they have to follow to get them back. Kids don't really understand long term effects just yet.

Mum of five here, three kids was hard until the baby was one. Five kids is hard at times, certainly more small people to get into the car, keep track of when you're out, feed etc. But I also found with each baby I got more relaxed too. Also depends on their ages, when my fifth was born I had a 2, 4&6 year old ( plus a 13 year old) and it was exhausting, now I have a 19, 12, 10,8&6 year old and it's exhausting in a different way. But honestly, parenting is hard no matter how many you have, I found it hard some days with one, found it hard some days with two. The beauty of having five is that I know what it was like to have one, two or three kids, so when my best friend who has just had her third baby (second living) rings me to say she's struggling I can say " I remember those days, bring them over so we can have a coffee and you can vent".

Might ask your sons' preschool teachers if they pick up toys at school. If they do, then ask them why they won't at home to see if they think it's because it's a mom's job, not theirs. Sometimes boys have to see men cleaning or they get funny ideas. Your book toy chest was brilliant because they know exactly where to put them. Maybe they need pictures on the storage boxes so they know what goes in what storage cubes/boxes. I'm a reading tutor and it always surprises me what children don't understand.
