I’d like to see as much preparation put into warmth, safety, tools and parts for the Whisker’s jobs as you put into collision repair and paint. Hillbilly was prepared. One more thing to admire about that man.

@@TheGhungFu I agree completely. I have noticed a pattern with the people on recovery type channels that use Snow cats. They will spend days, if not weeks making things all but perfect on their wheeled vehicles, but ignore anything and everything on the snow cats. The entire drive chain, all the way through the tracks would be checked and corrected before the first time out. Hell, your going where you cannot take a truck. Also, where are your tools and supplies? that beast is huge. plenty of space under the seats for supplies.

I think you need to get a toolset and extra belts and hoses and a few gallons of anti-freeze to keep in the snowcat. It might not be a bad idea to have a survival kit with food and water and blankets just in case you get stuck one day

Robbie I love ya man "BUT", you need to take that first tool box you ever got and fill it with Harbor Freight tools and keep it in the snow cat. Along with a milk crate filled with fluids that you may need and some belts and fuses and fuel filters and some hose clamps and some lengths of hose you may also need. I was a Hunting guide on a rather large ranch for some years and I used a Nissan Patrol for my vehicle. I carried fuel and a real matching new spare tire, snow chains and a large tow rope and a reel with 500' of rope on it and shovel and a highlift jack and a 12,000 winch with shackles and snatch blocks and soft slings and also a tool box with all I described earlier. i also had redundant fuel pumps so if one died I hooked the other one up. I ran dual batteries with a battery isolator so if one went dead it didn't effect the other one. I had a small 12v compressor with a long elect. cord. and hand held CB radios and a jump pack etc. you can't carry it all with you but you didn't even have a screwdriver. I'm a bit of Survivalist and McGiver I have a full tool box and flashlights etc. in every vehicle we own my Wife says why do you have so many tools. I tell her you won't be saying that when were sitting on the side of the road broke down and I can fix it. Be like Paul Cox and Rory not like Matt, heck half the time Matt doesn't even have fuel, you need to carry more than "tee shirts and tow ropes" New name for Matt's channel. I've seen people on the side of the road waving people down for a 1/2" wrench, Do Better, Don't be that guy.

That snow cat is really nice on the inside! That looks bigger than Matt's Offroad Recoveries snowcat. With that old of a machine I would probably replace the drive belts and all the hoses as preventative maintenance. That Hillbilly is one heck of a good mechanic.

well done guys , i have a little tip tho , if you're belt starts to slip and you have no tools to tighten it , get whatever soft drinks you have , like M D , coke pepsi , any of the sugery ones , pour it over the belt and start the engine , the sugers will go sticky and stop the belt from slipping , it works when you are in a bind .

Prayer is key. My brother and I were behind mount Logan one day. I hit a tree stump and blew the front tire, while putting on the spare, we heard a hiss from the rear tire. It was off and f the bead. We said a prayer and I got the impression to pull the tire back onto the bead. It worked! Those of you, in the know, know that’s impossible. Not with god.

I ran a snow plow in a fairly well populated area however still carried a case of motor oil, oil filter (stones and ice do pierce them too regularly), transmission fluid, two of each spare belt/hose required for everything, spare locking hubs, spare u-joints, brake fluid and coolant along with a waterproof first aid kit, shovels, come-a-longs, blankets, emergency food/water and a small snow thrower. Also carried 4 gas cans with 5 gallons of gas in each, tire chains for all 4 wheels and a small to medium sized mechanics tool box. When you are the emergency service that emergency services is depending on to clear the way for them you do have to be prepared for getting yourself out of an emergency situation. Robby's likely going to outfit Wiskers with a stock of required supplies once he learns more about the vehicle. Best!

My dad's most spoken off car story was when he and mom just met and broke down in grandpa's old Ford Zephyr, somewhere on the German Autobahn. The belt had broken but dad had a solution. In those days all young women wore *'modern' synthetic pantihose* and with mom's wrapped around the pulleys they made it to a garage. Growing up with the story was fun, but it also taught me a life long lesson: always be intuitive and look for solutions in awkward situations. I never became an engineer like my dad, but still today I'm the go-to trouble solver at work and among friends and family ...

Snow cats requir spair belts, hoses, coolant "spair tires on wheels" and a track repair kit . Every other part getting inspected every year before the snow flies you also need snow shoes or cross country skies. I maintained two of them for a government agency. If you never go more than a mile from your shop you can get by without the survival equipment I described. Using one at a ski lodge is nothing like using one to travel long distances in snow country.

Robby, when you have a belt tear in the middle of nowhere, Harbor Freight sells an American made link belt that can be made to the size of the original belt. There's another plus side. Take the belt you "made" to the parts house, and you have a belt to size the new one to.

You made me laugh, on a good way, younger folks, giving a go at it, handled it well. Definitely may I suggest a better inspection and look over on the gear, and never hurts to be little more prepared, and extras in the cat. gain confidence in the people, get more recovery calls. Getting there. do you think you glazed the cylinder walls on the over heat or damaged any bearings on the crank? will you have to check compression on it ? Thinking you may have to add a bigger radiator and, wasn't for sure. How cooling is done for transfer box ? additional cooler ? seen a video of other using cat, for recovery. Looks like it had to add extra cooling, for towing. To keep cool. Definitely hope input, helps,

Hey Robby the way that snow cat sled down that trailer you might want to do 1 of 3 thing. #1 bolt some 2" X 12" the length of your Trailer, or #2 get some old truck tires cut all the sides of and make a cut thru the treads and turn the tire into a track and mount the tire strip on both sides and the length of the trailer or #3 get some 3/4 rebar and cut into 2' length and weld horizontal every 8" on both sides and the length of the trailer, and some kind of safety rail on the side of your trailer to keep you from sliding off the sides.

I'm always impressed with your mechanical abilities but what really is impressive is that you all keep good spirits and don't pitch a fit when things go wrong. You guys just work through the problems.

Time to set Wiskers up with spares, tools, basic parts(nuts bolts hoses/clamps fluids), first aid gear (training for operators too) survival gear and a magnet in case you drop a nut in the snow. I would also say testing of gear/training too. Here's an idea, a Snowcat recovery Olympics!!!!!! Like the Wrecker Olympics

Thx RL for an informative and entertaining video of your snow recovery. BITD about 50yrsnago was in USN had segmented leather belts for emergency that could be adjuated for length by pulling leather segments off or adding to get required length worked great until a correct replacement could be installed. Maybe a good item for a emergency supply for your snow cat. Happy New Year to the crew and you and yours Robby

IF......... You want to keep DRY. Get some Camp Dry silicone and spray 5 to 6 coats on pants or coveralls. The directions on the can says less..... Put I found from experience, more is worth it ! I also sprayed down gloves. Working in the oilfield moving drilling rigs, my leather gloves only lasted 3 weeks, but if I silicone treated them, the gloves would last up to 3 months! Years of trials there ! 🤔 👍🏻
