I can't imagine NOT having chains and lockers in that part of the world. Heck, I live in Texas, and I have them, plus all the ropes and slings they carry just in case I find myself caught in a bad weather situation. Or for helping others! And we do a lot of trips up in Robby and Matt's area.

Get any vehicle you are taking into those conditions front, centre and rear lockers, and a set of chains that actually fit. Then you could just drive up there and get people out easily. Seriously, this whole rescue was just for KZbin dollars. Search and rescue went out anyway. Robby, do it properly and show us how it should be done. Otherwise, it is just entertainment value, at some risk to all concerned. The radios were a good move.

Pull that engine and give it a well deserved overhaul, a Robby paint job, some love to the transmission, rebuild other components, put his second gas tank back in and he will be awesome. As a former hunter safety instructor of over 20 years, I would like to point out an overlooked lesson here. Owen used his advanced knowledge of automobile technology to obtain some fuel for the fire that likely saved his life (you may not know the Blazer was out of coolant). I am not sure of what he used as an ignition source to start his fire. Before you head out into the back country, make sure you are prepared to make a fire at night. A small saw for gathering wood from a small dead standing tree, a reliable ignition source, some sturdy gloves, and a reliable flashlight capable of providing light for several hours so that you can gather fuel to maintain your fire.

The texting works in some places where the cellular phone service is marginal but a very limited signal. Just 5 miles from my home I can be in area that has no service to even send a text message. I have a cell tower less than a mile away. Satellite is about the most likely to have a signal anywhere but not a guarantee with trees overhead and hills or mtns.

One of the things I see the most on these recovery channels is lack of SHTF prep. Maybe it's for theatrics or maybe it's lack of planning. We never used to go out wheeling unless we had enough back up food, water and fire source (adjusted by season, of course). Having been stuck over night, prep usually means the difference between being comfortable and uncomfortable, but it can mean the difference between surviving and not.

Hey Robbie------The tow truck I cannot speak for because of the dual tire configuration and the super stiff sidewalls......but most other 4x4's you do not need or even want chains IF the tire pressure is reset to about 2 ~ 5 psi .....it's all about the snow shoe effect. Heck yes a 12volt air compressor is a must. But who would ever go out and do serious wheelin without one? Matt is the exception ya ya ya

@JamesSmith-vk3gz
@JamesSmith-vk3gz 2 ай бұрын
The chains in the rear really helped out in the amount of snow you guys were in. Just a tip, really deep stuff chains dig in then your tires don't even touch the ground causing a high centered situation. in that case you are better off with wide tighter tread pattern tires to get up on top of the snow. At least now the snow cat is drivable so the deep stuff can be done with better suited equipment.

Lockers are essential... SNOW tires are superior to Mudd tires in the snow. Some width.. AIRED down to provide a good footprint. Tread that captures the snow for traction and bead locks to lessen the chance of blowing the tire off the rim at low low low air pressure. Support equipment to be kept in the Trekker... variety of essential items. For situations just like this... if the Trekker is going to be used for this. It's a worthwhile investment. Preparation is a life saver... yes the snow cat would have been the ticket. However even in it, as it is being restored. Installation of a kit or two. Of essential items should be included in the build and kept up to date and in / on the vehicle. Flare gun.. air horn.. warm blankets... chainsaw... snowshoes... just brainstorm and put everything together. Beyond just the recovery equipment . 😎👍

@@utahmototrails It's usually just lost tourists. Many of them having working cell phones. While there's no connectivity to cell networks (I'm in very remote Maine) the GPS still works to keep you moving back in the direction you came from. People don't realize that they can use GPS when you're not driving. Then, when they do have a connection to call 911, explaining it to them doesn't seem to work well. At least then we get a ping. Sometimes it's not a lost tourist but someone injured. Those are the worst because we know they're in pain and moving them is going to cause them additional pain. But, someone's gotta do it. I'm retired and still fit enough to help out. I teach a few rope rescue classes every year as that's my area of expertise. Come take a class. They're free and may save a life someday.

If I may, I would like to offer this suggestion: Instead of driving over your chains and hooking them on top, simply throw them over the top of the tire so that the connection points are as close to the ground as possible, now you have gravity working in your favor, simply hook them in the back first and then pull the chain out and as tight as possible before you hook the front. I really do think this will make the process of chaining up much simpler and more doable. Let me know what you think.

ROBBY STOP IGNORING ME :) TELL HILLBILLY: a spool for the Toyota is only 100 bucks... also you could do lunch box locker front and rear and you don't even have to setup the gears again ... just replace the spider gears with it and you're done!

Just an FYI, they make a chain tool for working on chains. They look like big bolt cutters. For shortening chains you use the tool to spread the side rail hooks and then remove the extra length you don't need, instead of using a cutoff wheel. That way you can reuse the sections... You can also use the tool to crimp the side hooks if you break a cross link and need to replace one.

And... I'm amazed the Trekker got as far as it did on those tires. Holy cow. Put some good winter tires on it and it'd go right up that trail. And remember that tracks cause a LOT more fuel usage so plan accordingly. As I recall, Casey LaDelle's ZJ on tracks got really awful mpg when using the tracks.

Yes, having the right tire for winter conditions is key. Snow has different properties depending on temp, looseness, compacted or drifted. Sometimes you need a tire that provides traction and sometimes tires that provide reaction.@@superskrobb

On snow or ice, torque is your enemy. It causes wheelspin and polishes the snow. The Trekker was doing better in 2nd gear until Robbie said to put it in low. Then it spun the wheels and had problems. If it spins in 2nd, try 3rd. That's how it is done in the Great White North (Canada)!

Even if you don't have reception, you can still try to call 911. Without a connection to your carrier it sometimes tries to use satellite that are normally not used for commercial use. It's always worth a try in a real emergency

@@randallsmerna384 most phones sold these days will work on any carrier anywhere in the world. The days of a phone needing to match a carrier are broadly past. The modem handles all of them. America might be uniquely bad globally and not allow emergency calls without paying for it I guess.
