On December 21st, 1994. Disaster struck in the British town of Coventry just 4 days before Christmas. What became an already devastating scene narrowly avoided further fatal consequences as a Boeing 737 clipped the tops of nearby homes before crashing into a wooded area nearby to the local airport, also damaging other infrastructure.
What makes this story so intriguing is that for one thing, the purpose of this very flight was actually pretty controversial and unusual. When I tell you, that this plane came from the Netherlands but belonged to the National airline of Algeria, one may have some questions as to just what this plane was doing? Secondly, this is almost a forgotten incident. For the people of Coventry, this was a very localized accident that didn’t really get much nationwide coverage at the time and again very little since. So what was the deal with this mystery plane? And why did it crash?

I'm impressed by these Disaster Breakdowns. It's been many years since I played with GA Flight Simulators, and I'm impressed by the fact that you make videos with types that are really old and somewhat rare. So, my question is, do you make these videos with something like Microsoft Flight Simulator, and where do you get the models from? You do a good job explaining to the audience the physics of flight and instrumentation, which I suppose is why your channel has such a good support base. For my own part, I find these videos intriguing because you once in a while cover accidents & incidents I haven't heard of, but mostly because I'm impressed that you make some great flight videos with the equipment in question! My brother and I were in Coventry that morning, having purchased a local Midlands Bus and Train "Rover" Ticket at Coventry Bus Station. As you state, the weather was pretty foul that morning; wet and very cold. It was also quite misty as well but the mist appeared to be lifting as we boarded a bus that would eventually get us to Birmingham. Very soon after leaving Coventry, we both noticed a fairly large plane (that we assumed was going to Birmingham Airport) flying very low over a wooded area. We both exclaimed "what the heck is that plane doing?" as we lost sight of it. Much later that day when we arrived back into a very cold and foggy (thick fog) Birmingham from Stourbridge, the headlines for the local paper talked of an air crash near Coventry. We assumed that this was the same plane we saw earlier as the timescale was correct. We were both surprised at the lack of national coverage of the crash the following day. Like many others, neither of us knew that there was a Coventry Airport as both my Brother and myself were living in other parts of the Country. Thanks for covering this as I have related this story to many people who had never heard anything about the crash.

My mums just showed me this we lived in this house, after I was born, moved in literally just after the accident (talking 2 weeks) you could see the scars where they had rebuilt the house all through my child hood until we moved away, there is a plate near the area it landed, my brother pulled the curtain over it for the paper, god bless them ❤️ I had so many nightmares in that house xx

As a Coventrian, I feel I am obliged to inform you that Coventry is *not* a town, but a CITY!😂😂😂 Misnomer aside, this was a great video. I was very young when it happened and for some reason I always thought it was a smaller plane - not a Boeing 737! I’ve never met anyone who has ever spoken about it, and I don’t think there are much in the way of commemorations around the anniversary, at least to my knowledge anyway. My only recollections of it are of adults saying how dreadful it all was. It truly is a forgotten incident. Thank you for shedding light on it.

I talked to an Air Algerie pilot after the crash, he aknowledged the crew were good but he also mentionned that the cargo sector was on rotation bases meaning that you have to do only that kind of flying for a certain period of time and we all know that cargo ops is mainly at night to this date so fatigue was the major thing in this accident. May God have mercy on their soles, thank you for the video.

Such accidents were fairly common back then. A few years prior to this BA almost lost one of their 747s at Heathrow after the pilot flew too low on approach into the airport in fog. The autopilot was wonky, the first officer had the shits, the captain was by himself, and the plane ended up so low, it cleared the airport hotel roof by mere feets!

This one really surprised me, as I'd never heard about this accident. This was surprising in many ways, mainly because it occurred less than 20 miles from where I live (both today & at the time), and secondly because, as the son of a senior flight engineer for BA, I habitually take note of air accidents. Hell, I worked with many people who lived in Coventry at the time, and who would've driven past the accident site on the day of the accident to get to work. And yet, this is the first time I've ever heard about this...

I'll tell you something else too. The final report blamed pilot error, but they should have blamed the airline company for not updating the electronics so that the radio frequencies could have been dialed in properly. I guess at the time that company thought it was too expensive to update the electronics. Wonder how expensive they found it to get another jet?

Try Stockport Air Crash in 1967. A mix-up lead to not enough fuel being put into the plane, made worse by the way that the fuel tanks worked. They very nearly got to their destination - Manchester Airport - but they came down just outside Stockport town centre, in an area of waste grassland, the only place that they could have crashed without killing people on the ground. It's thought that the pilot used the very last of the fuel to avoid killing folks on the ground. Edit:- Forgot to say, hope you're doing well, and keep on keeping on!

This was a really interesting video! Until recently I used live in the South Coventry area just past the airport and have heard of this incident but, as I wasn't born when it happened, have never really looked into it much. My mum remembers it quite well, and it's interesting to still see the dent it's caused in the landscape today! I've always wanted to learn more about it as I often watch your videos and have always been interested in aviation incidents, but as you said it was never widely reported. Another great video as always, Chloe... Maybe antiquated, but in case you're interested, the first ever Oceanic Ditching of an Airliner WITH 100% survival, was on Oct. 16, 1956... A Boeing 377 Stratocruiser was "gently" broken into 3 pieces very nearby USGS Pontchartrain between Hawaii and California... AND my "big question" regards Captain Ogg's decision(s) to circle the Pontchartrain rather than try to get closer to the California coastline... MOSTLY, that's because the wording I've seen says that he circled the Coast Guard vessel "until dawn"... Ogg's decisions were somewhat informed (by most reports) by a similar Oceanic crash in 1955, in which 4 people were killed... SO you might have a look-see at that one as well (whether you make much mention or maybe put together a whole separate video for it)... IN any case, just another less mentioned (that I could see) episode of "Planes raining out of the sky" if you wished to add to your list.. ;o)

I live in the UK but had not heard of this accident before now - I am guessing there was something else going on in the news at the time of the accident that prevented it getting a more wide coverage. But I do recall all the controversy regarding live stock being shipped out of the country by road and sea, which might explain why this company was shipping live stock by air - hoping to dodge the controversy, though it sounds like it did not work and the activists soon realised what was happening. Sad to hear the crew died, but wow, that was so close to causing many more deaths on the ground. Thanks for covering the story.

I agree that there was probably something else going on in the news at the time. As was mentioned in this video, Air France Flight 8969 was hijacked, although that happened 3 days later. Any attention to Air Algérie 702p could have easily been diverted to and overshadowed by that incident, especially because it was ongoing for 2 days. Another thought I have is that this accident happened on the 6th anniversary of Lockerbie. So it's possible that the news (especially in GB) was focused on remembering the victims. I lived in Willenhall at that time and I'm very familiar with the area, it was sad to know that the aeroplane had come down and that 5 people had lost their lives. I always wondered but for the grace of God how the aeroplane didn't land on the houses which it could have done if it had hit the pylon any lower. I remember the fog was very thick that morning when I left for work, you couldn't see anymore then maybe a couple of metres in front of you. I worked at a local Car Factory which was located not far from where this accident happened so when the pylon have been struck all the power in the factory went down, we all gave a massive cheer as we always used to do whenever the production line stopped but 15-20 minutes after the accident had happened the news began to filter through on the local radio that a plane had hit the pylon and had come down in the area, obviously the car factory employed people who lived in Willenhall and particularly from that area, people were getting calls saying that power lines were on the ground in their back gardens and one person I worked next too had such a call then we knew which area of Willenhall it was, he then proceeded to go home as quickly as he could not knowing what he would find when he got there. Luckily no one was hurt in the houses and to think that something as big as a plane could clip the roof on the corner of a house and then miss other houses of the same height then virtually fly meters above a road and plough straight into the wood was absolutely staggering and equally if a vehicle had been coming round that bend in the road at the time the plane was at a sufficient height where it could have hit a high vehicle then there could have been more fatalities. Today that pylon still stands in the same place but now it has a red light beacon on top of it which warns pilots of its presence, I suspect the reason why it had never been done before this event was because they never thought an aeroplane would fly so low so close to the houses and have this type of devastation. It's something that I and other people from Willenhall will never forget and as of Autumn 2022 there is now talk of Coventry Airport be removed in favour of a giga factory, Rest In Peace the 5 people that lost their lives and hopefully this will be something that will never happen again.

@@DisasterBreakdown Thankyou very much, There was another plane crash in an area very close to Willenhall, the area is called Ernesford Grange and the only thing that separates Willenhall from Ernesford Grange is the railway embankment and at the point where the crash took place there is a river and a seven arch Viaduct, this was the Coventry Air Show crash 1988. It was the crash of a twin engined meteor jet which are taken off from Coventry Airport (known locally sometimes by its original name of Baginton Airport), it had flown over the railway embankment and the pylons that run through Willenhall, the pilot had a malfunction in his plane and he had to make the decision to bring the aircraft down in an open field area very close to a main road and the beginning of a housing estate which obviously he had to avoid. I did witness this crash and the heat from the fireball that came from that crash penetrated a window I was looking through watchin the plane on the opposite side of the Railway Embankment maybe 1000 yards away, I watched the plane get lower and lower knowing it was going to crash and then all of a sudden the fireball rose way above the railway embankment which I know to be 60 ft high and seconds later you could feel the heat penetrate in through the window, I immediately shouted the has crashed, the plane has crashed, within seconds I and other people maybe 10-12 of us ran that distance towards the railway viaduct that crossed a river and on to the other side of the embankment where the plane has come down. We were the first people over there even people from the nearby houses were slow to appear, I couldn't believe that we were the first people there, we didn't know what to do there was fire everywhere - I mean the grass was on fire everywhere, bits of the plane had ended up in people's gardens but the majority of the plane no longer existed because of the explosion, the airport obviously knew the plane was coming down we'd only been over there for a couple of minutes and a police motorbike rode onto the grass and the police officer was shouting at us to move in no uncertain terms, he said there's nothing to see, there's nothing to see, get away, get away, all we could do was stand around trying to figure out what had just happened, there was nothing we could do the plane had hit a tree and this was the only tree in the middle of this open area nothing but grass and bushes, the pilot had done this on purpose, he had to stay with the plane so that it didn't stray and didn't go into the housing estate, he took down half the tree. It's something that I will never want to witness again, I'm glad that I wasn't on that side of the embankment - his side, because it would have been a terrible sight to see, seeing the explosion and feeling the heat all that distance away was bad enough because I knew it was going to happen and all I could do was watch and wait has the plane disappeared out of view behind the embankment and then came the explosion. Ever since then people have been weary about aircraft flying around Willenhall whether they be commercial aircraft or aircraft taking part in flying displays such as this one, there hasn't been another air show since, then came the big crash of 1994 and that's two crashes that Willenhall and an area very very close to Willenhall have had. As we were the first people there all the emergency services came from all over the place including the airport crash tenders because they didn't know if the plane has gone into the housing estate and if it had of done things could have been far worse, the pilot gave his life to save others and for that the residents of both Willenhall and Ernesford Grange will be eternally grateful. Today in both areas of crashes there are memorial plaques commemorating the deaths of all the people involved, so I say as I've said before in the past, Rest In Peace all those who perished. As we were the first people over there we were asked by many reporters and by many officials what we had seen and if we had any pictures, we only spoke to officials but we all refused to speak to the press out of respect for the pilot. If I remember correctly, I spent the rest of the morning cleaning my company car in the car park - completely oblivious to what had happened.

I knew the brother of the herdsman on board 'Yates' was the family name. They had a farm on the A5. near Clifton. Such a tragic shame. Coventry airport has had a few general aviation accidents with fatalities as well. I'm so glad i gave up flying from Coventry. It was truly scary times.

Despite being an avid fan of these (not the accidents, the investigations and finding of causes) Ive never heard of this crash. However, it seems, that far too often it only makes headlines, when its a passenger plane. Even if its a small plane with 1 or 2 persons onboard, it'll make headlines, but somehow a big freight plane, even with 2-5 ppl onboard, apparently isnt "sexy" enough for the news media. So usually we only have major stories on those cases, like the El Al freighter, that crashed into an apartment building in Amsterdam. Otherwise the freight plane crashes, regardless of plane size and ppl onboard, at best get a line or 2 in a place, where most ppl dont notice it. Thank u for covering these accidents!

Air cargo routinely flies animals - house pets, horses, and zoo animals for the most part. At one time breeding stock cattle and other food animal species were moved the same way, but it is easier to ship semen and embryos now that that technology has been developed. Import/export is expensive and subject to the need to prevent transport of diseases along with the animals.

I never heard of this accident. Being an airline pilot, we used to study various accidents in recurrent ground school to see how they could have been prevented. I flew the 737-200 as a First Officer. I remember practicing ASR approaches in the simulator over the years.

Correction to what is stated in the video: 7T-VEE was built as a 737-200C, with the cargo door installed at manufacture. Several other early 737 operators, including Aer Lingus, Britannia and Lufthansa availed of this option in order to operate short-haul jet cargo services. The aircraft could be converted quickly between the passenger and cargo roles, as the seats were mounted on pallets and could be installed or removed in an hour or two.

I've actually flown from Coventry and I think that it was to Jersey.I believe that it's freight only now but it went through a period of development as a low cost airline airport.The Pope also used it when he visited England.As it's so close to Birmingham International and East Midlands isn't far either I can't see why it was developed as a passenger airport but at the time these airports were popping up like mushrooms.

They tried to be an LLC airport but the fact that Birmingham and East Midlands were so close killed any chance it had at being successful. It is now cargo and general aviation only and there even has been some proposals to close it down entirely.

I used Coventry Airport for a time, for trips to Spain. It was small and felt luxurious, so much more enjoyable than the hectic Birmingham International Airport.

I remember this and can still see the jet moment's before it crashed. I was travelling home and a flash of a Boeing 737 in fog over houses played over in my mind. I got home and a newsflash appeared. A Boeing 737 had crashed in fog. I will never forget this, coincidence? Maybe but the detail was so close it had stuck with me to this very day.

Algeria was in the middle of a bloody civil war at this time. There was probably additional stress on the airline & crew.

Looking at the map no part of Algeria is likely to be more than 1 hour out from UK time. The legs they had been flying would have a bigger effect than where they were from. And fatigue leads to *increased* reaction times, not decreased.

What’s also interesting-the fact this accident happened on December 21, 1994-is that it happened literally three or four days before the hijacking of Air France Flight 8969, and Algeria (unless I misheard) was also mentioned in that video as well.

Jay, airplanes regularly carry top (expensive) race horses all over the world, and have been for many years, and probably other types of horses as well, for instance, horses which compete in Olympic equestrian events. Mind you I was surprised that they carried cattle, ie. veal calves, which could easily go by sea.

At least there were no animals aboard. It's amazing that a power line crosses right before a landing strip of a commercial airport. I can see that at a small airport for general aviation but not a commercial airport.

Honestly, I think the pilots did the best they could under the circumstances. They were clearly sleep-deprived, but once a crash was imminent, they were able to avoid any casualties to anyone not on the plane.

i remember this happening i deliver to the industrial estate on the flight path on a regular basis & always think of this accident. i will say i never knew that the aircraft had clipped a pylon. thanks for sharing.

I would like to think that the pilots did manoeuvre to avoid houses. I certainly lessen the blame given them. They SHOULD have had the ILR. They were overworked and very tired. It really feels like calling the accident "pilot error" is only half the story and going hard on them.

I live in Coventry and grew up in the area it happened. I don't remember much as I was only about 15 but I do remember people talking about it a lot. And I remember seeing pics in the local paper

To all Pilots out there… Please get some much needed Sleep. I know traveling to different time zones are a pain body wise… But try to force yourself to get to sleep I do that when I have to get up early in the morning since my Job has me getting up most times now at 5AM when normally I go to sleep at 3AM.
