On September 26th 1997. Garuda Indonesia flight 152 crashes in low visibility while on approach to Medan Airport. The crew made a fatal mistake in making a wrong turn which lead them off course. The plane struck the treetops in rural Indonesia bring the plane down. All 234 people on board were killed in the crash.

Often a single error is not dangerous. Here it also wasn't, it was a multitude of errors that occured and all had to occur at once that caused the disaster.

That's true of almost all air accidents. Passenger aircraft are about as reliable as your toaster--even several connected errors usually are not enough to bring one down. You have to have a truly spectacular cascade of coincidental problems or crew/ATC mistakes for one of these accidents to happen.

Multiple error in this flight but the most reason lead to this incident was communication and poor teamwork from pilot. Another reason contributing to this incident was the airport where they went only use radar but upload every 12 seconds. Also during the last moment; the GPWS didn't sound(Contributing to this incident) Weather is not the cause

In early part of the video when the tower makes incorrect callsign, they call "Merpati" instead of "Indonesia", there may be a small factor of the fact that Merpati was part of Garuda Indonesia group. Indonesians see them as "family". Just FYI - Merpati has closed down their operation in 2014. And Garuda, despite winning excellent service awards almost every year, is now in the brink of bankruptcy, due to mismanagement

Most likely the smoke/smog is from burning the rice fields to prepare the fields for the next planting/sowing of rice. Happens in Thailand too. I don't think it's from forest fires.

Actually this is a peat swamp forest fire, so because the ground containing so much peat (proto-coal) not only the forest is burned, the ground too, that's why sumatran and borneo forest fire is tend to cause very thick fog and need months to be Extinguished

Also done to swathes of palm plantations for the same reason. The areas leading up to Medan have large palm and rubber plantations. The smog created by these plantations can and have been known to drift over to neighboring Malaysia and even Singapore as the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix can attest.

My cousin's family lived opposite Captain Wiyogo in Bintaro, Jakarta. The forest forest fires and El Nino in 1997 definitely didn't help! My uncle was a captain on DC10 and 747 and another one of my cousins is a F/O for an A330, all for Garuda. Those were some very dark days in the late 90's - mid noughties. That said, Garuda's safety culture and standards have been enhanced significantly, much like how the same could be said for Korean Airlines in the 1980s. Modern day Indonesian low cost carriers are indeed concerning, and it's a telling sign that I'd only ever fly on Garuda when Island hopping - Put simply, the demand for air travel on the archipelago has expanded the need for more flights, with lesser experienced flight crew combined with other time/cost pressures. Oh, that and the nation being bombarded with very pronounced weather phenomenon. Great video - I remember the day this happened.

Yes definitely. I am Indonesian and I cannot trust any other flights other than Garuda to this day. Whenever my grandparents tell me I should go to Jakarta by lion air, I immediately rejected it. It’s a good thing I’m not living in Indonesia and having to island hop for many reasons anymore.

@@eggorl I had to say to my parents "pak, kalau mau murah, silahkan, monggo lion air... bisa dapet hadiah water landing juga" but I also said to my dad "you didn't pay a lot of money for me to do an engineering degree and not actually listen to what I have to say!" I don't compromise on safety, and at least there are at least a few airlines that have learnt from their past experience. But then again, you might also have a ketus captain who will be very arrogant (Jakub Van Zanten for example).

@@noahthesarcastictd I've flown Citilink a handful of times and I've found them to be roughly on par with Air Asia. Truth be told, if things go well, you'll be fine. I've also flown Sriwijaya a few times too... also owned by Garuda. But as tragic as air crash investigations are, the conclusions from their forensic analysis or human factors evaluations help inform what kind of safety culture an airline employs. I most certainly don't want a pilot who pulls circuit breakers or resets vital flight controls in flight 🤔.

I flew countless times with Garuda, Merpati, Sempati, Pelita/Caltex, and Lion Air since my childhood in the 80s. I never had any problems beside mild turbulence and terribll ear-ache (only in Lion Air). 😅 Garuda is still my favorite...especially when I saw the pilots are older/with white hair...I can expect the smoothest landings. 🛫 🛩 I think our national airlines had improve more and more since the 'p10s, hopefully we can shake the negative image off soon, because from personal experiences I do feel that other/neighbor countries' airlines still (just slightly) have better services than ours. Most particularly in the food sections, LoLoLoL. 🙏😊

This video may not 100% correct. As I know there was confusion on cocpit about where they are when ATC instruct them to turn left. Crew consider they are already NORTH of airport while actually they are still SOUTH of airport. That is why when ATC instruct them to turn right heading 47, pilot turn fhe plane left because that is the correct turn if they are already NORTH of airport. This is why they confused whether they had to turn left of right.

It should also be noted that the air traffic controller distracted the pilots from monitoring their altitude because since the radar at Madan only updated every 12 seconds, he didn't even know that the pilots had turned the wrong way.

Some of the abbreviations in METARs and TAFs come from English words and some from French. For example, rain (RA), snow (SN), and fog (FG) are from English while smoke (FU), mist (BR), and hail (GR) are from French. The ICAO is headquartered in Montreal, after all.

At one time, Garuda did not have a very good reputation. They have vastly improved their reputation. At one time Garuda was banned from landing at any airport in The European Union. Since then, the ban was lifted.

This happened in my 17th birthday, my parents took me to a fancy dinner with some other family and they talked about this incident almos throughout the somber "celebration". My cousins lost one of their aunt in the flight, the eldest of them(who at the time studied in a university in Medan) had to identify her solely by her familiar favorite purple batik dress, because (he said) the poor aunt had been decapitated and lost most of her limbs. It was a nightmarish experience he can't ever forget. I never knew the late relative personally (don't even remember how she looked like), but my cousin'sstories about the crash site and the bodies still haunt me to this day. 😢💔 RIP everyone and may their friends and families have found their peace today... PS: I really appreciate your work, Chloe, now I can truly understand what happened that day. Hugs and kisses from one of your subscriber in Indonesia. ❤

In the period of 2019 till present Indonesia has improved its safety record regarding the airlines either on domestic or international routes. As i remember, the US is the only country which hasn't opened for us yet. European countries have accepted us though.

Have flown on several Indonesian domestic flights. Garuda or Citilink are usually the best. Avoid Lion Air. Btw, the new terminal at Soekharno Hatta airport is great.

I've been to Jakarta. And it's one of the most outdated airports I've ever seen. And ugly too. And also it's funny. Indonesia is really poor. Jakarta as a city is also really poor with literally wooden houses under bridges everywhere. Yet their government can buy such big and modern planes? They could've invested that in their own country. The roads are next level bad in Indonesia as a whole.
