Some of the materials used to create the glow effect react differently to ultraviolet light depending on the wavelength. I personally use a UV flashlight that emits 365NM light and find that it works very well with anything made by MVP, Axiom, streamline. But not so great for my Kastaplast, or my opto moonshine discs, which a 395NM light works significantly better.

I'm curious to know the wavelength UV you charged these with, since I think that's a variable too. 385nm? 395nm? or even a 365nm?

Next time you test, you may want to include charging time. A few of my discs charge up instantly, never get any brighter, then fall off quickly. My Moonshine Deputy takes the longest time to charge up, but then glows for a long time. My best glow disc is an MVP Reactor. It charges fast with UV light, and can still be found in a very dark room after 8-hours.

Im not familiar with RPM, I mainly stick to the major brands. Iv got stack of glow discs from daddy disc golf again this year. They sent the latest they had from their inventory, no rpm. Too expensive to buy the random brands with my own money.

@TKDiscGolf They are New Zealand company. I understand the cost issue. I ordered 2 from OTB to compare them to my MVPs. I've only seen one video on their glows. They look decent.

Does a Lux meter reflect more what a sensor can perceive (ie: everything), or does it mirror well what the human eye can see, in terms of wavelengths (ie: much less than everything)? The nuance is important, because you could be reading a higher lux value that's coming from wavelengths that we won't see.

It’s just what the meter can pick up. So when the Lux meter is reading 0.0, you can still see most the disc with the human eye. That’s why I did the pictures over time at the end of the video, to give a decent representation of how they looked later on in time. Really tho, the Lux readings are just a cool way to show how all the brands drop off compared to others.

You should think about doing a 2023 part two. You really should compare the '23 Sexton Firebird against last year or another Innova glow disc, since they claim the glow has been improved. I also think that Trilogy Moonshine is being marketed as improved this year. Would be great to see if these claims are truthful or not

I would also be happy to send you a new Innova Glow, which is only available on the 2023 Sexton Firebirds. It still doesn't hold a candle to the competitors, but it might be close to Discrafts recent improvements.

Actually your light source "Charging" system is very non scientific and quite unreliable... Perhaps storing the disks in a light proof satchel for an hour or 2 (what ever it takes to completely unexcite the plastic) then in a dark room (remote light switch in a sealed studio perhaps, transfer the disk to a box with a controlled light source for a timed period so all the disks get the same 'charge' A single extra sweep round with your torch, or a slower sweep, would both give a different charge to a disk, and therefore a different result. You may also find some disks have a brighter rim, or brighter centre... this will also vary result and should be noted. (I have a Halloween Buzz that is clear and the rim glows way more than the centre, and an Envy with no glow on the rim...)

You are right, but it doesn't really matter for the purposes of this video. The individual discs still got charged up the same and glow at 10 minutes is the only functionality important data point.

This isn’t a college level experiment buddy. In a perfect world, I’d build a UV light box, charging the discs evenly and for a specific amount of time and I would run these tests a dozen times per disc to take a true average. However, this is just a hobby. I’m not spending weeks of my time for this short video. I would LOVE to see a college student take this idea and use this for a project in their field of studio, but imo this is best you are going to find on any disc golf KZbin channel.

@@TKDiscGolf Didn't mean to rile anyone.. just pointing out that if your going to the trouble of graphing the data, you may as well have made the process a little less random... Actually just putting the disks in a covered box for an hour, then turn off the lights in the room. put a disk on a desk under a lamp. turn the lamp on for say 30 secs while grabbing the meter... and at 30 secs turn off the light and start noting the level... Way more repeatable.. and so simple.. otherwise the output is a little arbitrary.

Thanks a lot for the video and the effort you put into it! I totally grant MVP the win, but unfortunately, I don't like the feel of the Eclipse 2.0 plastic. I tried several of theses discs (Hex's, Envy's, Reactor's,...) but I never got a firm grip on one of these. Usually I slip them way to early. Since I expect to find my discs inside a few minutes after throwing them, I don't mind if they don't glow as bright after 45 minutes. After experimentating with different glow-plastics myself, I stuck with Kastaplast. Their feel is unsurpassed (at least in my hands) and they are long enough bright enough to find them, even when playing with several players on the card. Cheers, Lutz
