Swedish disc dyer here: 1. Pro plastic is not great for dyeing, acceptable but not great. 2. The Pro Chemical And Dye colors should be mixed with HOT (almost boiling) water. 1 teaspoon color with 1 teaspoon HOT water. Mix. Then add the acetone. 3. The acetone + dye will work better if you let it sit for 24h before using it. 4. Pro Chemical And Dye colors need heat to work 100%. I use a heating mat but a lot of people use also use a heating lamp. Heat for 2-4h and then leave it without heat for the full 24h. I have a video on my channel where I show some methods and several tutorials is in the works! Let me know if you have any questions or need some help :)

@@missfrisbees Best tip I can give is to MIX the HECK out of the dyes, the agitation will help get the particles to suspend in the acetone, if you don't shake them until your arms fall off, and you see a lot of particles in the bottom, that means there's less dye in the solution, but yes, do take off the top of the mix with your dropper as Chris said. 1/4tsp dye per 2oz acetone is plenty. Measure your acetone (shotglass). This might have been the gremlin, everything else you guys did looked like it should work (except for Pro plastic). Get the discrepublic starter pack of ProChem (6 colours for under $30) is a great starting point. Welcome to the fun of dyeing!

I am so glad you posted this! I was literally gearing up to dye some discs today, same exact setup, and now I am hesitant... Going to be watching these comments like a hawk. I did watch a tutorial video where he left his discs in the glue for 40 hours, but they came out too dark, so now I am in the dark. Great content!

part of the reason why the enigma looks faded is because any translucent plastic like champion, Lucid, etc. needs to sit at least 48 hours in my experience. Also if you can use a heating lamp to apply heat that helps to make the color really pop.

I rolled about 5-6 balls of cling film and place in a pan… then poured some hot dye on the balls, the place the disc on top and keep pressed down with weight for 5 hours… worked well for me and worth a try 👍🏼 Good luck on nailing it for the future 🎨 loved the vid and inspired me to try again 😉☺️

I've never messed with glue beds but have had really good luck using prochem and lotion. Mix the dye with a little water and then lotion in a plastic squirter bottle, then use that for designs.

Also yoy can use idye poly as well, they are cheaper than the prochem but are smaller but it would be a way to get different colors for less money

Want to add different texture styles? Use bubblewrap or plastic wrap to place the onto. Plastic wrap you can shrivle and wrinkle and makes nice lines. Bubble wrap will give you a fun pattern.

It's interesting that the shaving cream method (the one without acetone) was more vibrant than any others. Many shaving cream methods also use a misting bottle to wet the dye with water, not with acetone, and they seem to come out well. Without knowing a lot about this, it might be possible that the acetone was working against you w.r.t. saturation, like it was washing itself off. Could be wrong, though.

Powder dyes are so much fun for dyeing shirts and sweaters. Sprinkle the dye on the fabric. Tie up. Then dip in your vinegar solution. Some of the best dyes I've done were with synthetic powders. If you have extra powder, try it out!

pro (sorta) tip - before adding acetone to dyes in the glass jars, add a very small splash of hot water. be very careful not to overdo it, but the hot water helps to activate the powder before it dissolves in the acetone

@@missfrisbees some prochem colors are stronger than others. i have no experience with cerise, but royal purple is normally quite strong and caribbean is a bit fainter. if the hot water doesn’t help when mixing, you can try submerging the jar in some hot water before starting. i recently started doing that and i got some better saturation out of it edit: i almost forgot, but adding heat using a heat lamp or even using your oven (would not recommend) also helps immensely with saturation and also cuts down on dye time

A lot of this has to do with the type of plastic. Pro plastic does not take dye well at all. I highly recommend getting Star plastics and doing the same method. If you wanted to try another great plastic to dye, go for K1 plastic from kastaplast!!! And do a lotion bed method!!! All in all, you guys didn’t do anything wrong. It’s just the type of plastic.

Heat is pretty important to using the neon PCAD dyes. I like to add worm dye to my powdered dyes. I think it gives them more punch. Another easy technique is a lotion bed. Queen Helene lotion at Walmart is a excellent choice for lotion beds. Then mix dye with lotion. Lay down a pattern and swirl or pattern with a toothpick. Fun stuff. Keep doing it!

I believe you chose the wrong plastic discs. Example: The PRO Tern is a cheap plastic For Innova best results come from STAR plastic. Go with Premium plastic discs for dyeing. And yes at times when applying dye to the clear glue the dye will be near invisible but it always comes out vibrant on premium discs. Still enjoyed the video. We all fail at this till we try this a few times.

When I was a little kid my dad was a college basketball coach. I was the water and towel boy for the team and even got to go on road trips with them so I was a pretty big deal. After one game the players had a shaving cream fight and I ate a big handful of it assuming it was whipped cream. It definitely did not taste as good as it looked.

So I am no pro but I recently have been trying to dye discs. I know you need to dye premium plastic. Secondly I have have had a issue with lighter colors not being vibrant. The last disc I dyed I left in front of a space heater on low and that seemed to work much much better! It was only one disc but it's the only thing I changed from the other discs so maybe try keeping it in front of a heat source while you are letting the dye take.

You're measuring the dye all exactly with a teaspoon, and then just adding acetone without measuring that. It's all about concentrations/proportions! It's like cooking, you don't measure a bit of sugar very precisely, and then just dump any random quantity of flour (maybe 10x too much) into a big mixing bowl.

Love this video. I'm looking at dyeing some discs too. The glue method, from what I've seen online, seems to produce cool vibrant result. But I feel it's so wasteful and bad for environment to use so much glue for each disc and then put it down the drain. Does anyone know of any better, more environmentally-friendly option?

U can reuse the gluebed , just pour it back to a container , doesnt matter if the glue looks dirty , the color will sit on top of the glue , u might get some minimal pickup from the old glue but nothing bad

If this dye has cobalt in it, from a pottery background it’s really potent. You might have to use more of the other colors. Idk what’s in these dyes. But in glazes Iron and cobalt will drown all other colors. That’s reds and blues.

I’ve been dying for a few months now and my guess is that the plastics that those discs are made of aren’t good at taking the dye. There are some plastics that just don’t work. If you’re really interested in getting some good dyes go to the r/discdyeing subreddit. There’s a wiki pinned to the top of the page. That wiki has a list of plastics and how well they take dyes. That’ll help you pick the right discs to dye.
