Jocko, the things you say are the types of things I tell myself in my head during tough times - but hearing it from another real person (and spoken with considerably more conviction than I can muster on my own) ... well, let's say it got me out of bed this morning - and that's saying something.

Pay off all debts (besides your mortgage if you have one). Establish a cash emergency account of 3 months expenses. Max out your 401, 457 and IRAs. Stick to a budget and pay for everything in cash. Close all your CC accounts. You no longer need them for a credit rating. Pay off mortgage. Once that is done invest in real estate. If you do it sooner, you're neglecting something important and it can be risky. Your retirement accounts and compound interest will make you a millionaire long before being a landlord will and if done correctly with mutual funds can weather the storm better.

My dad always gives the advice "invest in yourself, you know you won't screw yourself". I'm doing that, I'm working harder than I've ever worked to start my own business. I haven't had a day off, including weekends, in a month. The work feels so rewarding though, it's almost not work. I don't feel like I need a break yet. I'm also taking Jocko's advice, if you feel like you need a break, maybe. But wait a day and see if you still feel that way. So far, it turns out, it was just the voice of weakness.

I like it, possibly another point regarding work is to identify why you're doing the work you're doing. Identify If it's for impact, creativity or money, if you're doing something that's high impact (feeding the poor) but generates low money then you have to be very aware of it and your needs. Many go into work or careers that are high creativity, high impact but that generate little money, then they're angry to be struggling financially. One needs to be clear as to what your focus is regarding whatever activity it is that you're doing.

I was so far behind for so long but about 6 years ago I started doing what your saying. I was essentially homeless, living where I could. I did not even have a car. But we saved and got an old camry. Eventually we bought a house in a desireable area that appreciates yearly and we bought a new car later, after we had our property secured. Having the property actually made it easier to get the car

@@1veryfunnygirl Thank you, I agree, it is a very powerful lesson and in someways counter intuitive. It's easy to believe that discipline limits you and not see that it actually opens up opportunities and gives you freedom if your're focused on the right stuff. I'm glad you've come accross this content and that it's impacted you possibly, I've had a similar experience.

If you're offered shares in the place where you work do it, not loads of money just a bit, money in pensions, own your home outright before retirement, my colleague is in good shape financially, he'll have the same income from his pensions and shares when he retires in 4 years that he earns as a salary now. He's already been mortgage free for a few years . Solar panels on his roof, he gets paid for supplying electricity back to the grid , share dividends pay him twice a year a nice lump 3/4 of a months wages, he's not rich but he's been smart with his money

Especially for young dudes, don't get into cars. Cars are not investments, they're losers, 100% of the time. When you're in your 30's or 40's and you have all your ducks in a row, you can think about getting something you want, but until then, drive something that takes you to where you need to go. I saw this in the military all the time, dudes spending at least half their paychecks on stupid cars. And people in the military know that doesn't leave you with much left.
