Going from a commercial gym to a more old school powerlifting gym has really paid off. I'm currently training for my third Strongman competition

This is such a good reminder. That ability for self discipline is what sets apart the good and great. So many people think about the success they see of athletes or whatever. So many don’t understand the hard workand sweat and it takes to get it done day in and day out.

I agree, discipline is essential for success. We can absolutely ride on motivation, but when we are tired, motivation goes pretty quickly. I have gotten through a lot based on self discipline. Great topic Brian!

Thanks! I usually just go to the gym and start in the massage chair. After I'm relaxed I find that I often will go out to train, all the anxiety or concern is gone. If I really don't want to do it, I can always leave. I've found once I start though, it goes fine.

Sometimes just getting dressed and going is the hardest part. I always tell myself get dressed and put your shoes on. Do the warm up. If still not feeling it then it’s ok.

Lifting has definitely made me more disciplined. Especially when I went back to school for my master's and the thought of doing homework was so hard to do. Love the podcast.

With one voice, the room sounds good. It's definitely different for us that have a regular job. My motivation/discipline has got me 22 years Monday with no unpaid time off. Sometimes we just have to get up and go do it.

Motivation is short term. End Stop. Goals are not attained from getting motivated to accomplish a goal. The problem is that the goal does not have a value that resonates with someone’s values. When a Goal intersects with someone’s core values it becomes an aspiration. An aspirational goal transcends. For athletes, like yourself, you train to accomplish massive goals because its who you are and what you do. ‘Being a World Class Strength Athlete is your identity. Your identity is formed through not only your accomplishments but the values you place on The Who you are as an individual. The biggest challenge we have as coaches is that we think that others can identify with us as movements professionals. that is just not true and is a major fault in our ability to move people towards their goals. Coaches are not motivating. We are people that guide people from where they are to where they want to be. The reality is their goal does not hold the same level of priority that we have. So you have to find the purpose behind the goal and how that matters to them. So I agree motivation does not have the power that it has been presented. Motivational speakers will keep you pumped for 24 hrs. While you are planning to be awesome, life is happening. Discipline is the conviction you have to living the life you choose. If your goals dont reflect your value system and your purpose…. You cant be disciplined to accomplish that goal either. Your value system and purpose is the key. ASPIRATIONAL GOALS!!
@FullcircleFaith2 жыл бұрын
well said sir! this is something I need to keep in the forefront of my mind. Aspiration. what do I desire to become. What makes people like Brian shaw so great is they aspired to fulfill that "goal" in their life and once they did obtain that level of excellence, they were committed to maintaining that discipline that enabled them to get there.

This one is a good one and what I needed to hear, espeically about falling back into the discipline you've developed. For me I'm learning there is a "discipline" mindset and it doesn't matter what I'm doing, I just know it needs to be done and for that I'm able to work through the task.

Are you motivated to go to work every day? No but you go because you have to go. Training is an athletes job. When you change your mind set from this is an option to this is a necessity motivation won’t matter.
