Brilliant mate, after my 350lc bit the dust I bought a brand new TZR 250 and my brother got a RD 350 F2 ypvs, we used to swap bikes and ride like hooligans, which is what these things were for.

Ha thanks , appreciate it, it was like though , you used to just swap bikes and ride them like you stoke them😂 they definitely turn you into a hooligan :)
@Scott-ph2yk Жыл бұрын
Great bike. I have one in my garage. They are fun little bikes. Easy to work on, good parts availability. The YPVS is very refined for a two stroke. Smooth power delivery and stable handling. The older air cooled RD's are more primitive, but I like their ornery personality; they like to be ridden hard, keeping the revs high. They are not happy riding slow through town. The YPVS is more Jekyll and Hyde. Calm, but tractable when ridden sedately through town, but fully capable hooligan mode when you call upon Mr . Hyde! The best of both worlds. We never had the LC in the US. We had to envy you guys in the UK. Thank God Yamaha gave us the YPVS!!!! Enjoy the bike. Ride safe.
@ProjectMoto Жыл бұрын
Yeah agree mate , very smooth , you could ride the the YPVS everyday , round town, down the twist’s , that must of been hard not having the the LC as there was a bit of a jump from the older RD’s
@Scott-ph2yk Жыл бұрын
@@ProjectMoto Yeah, it was a strange period from 1980 to 84. Amongst the RD boys at the time, we all thought the '79 RD400 was the end of the line. Along comes the LC, but not for the US. We were like kids lusting after some movie starlet. Across the border 🇨🇦 they had the LC, so we would see one once in a while. It just made us crazy. Forbidden fruit stuff. Yamaha USA did a great job with the marketing launch for the YPVS. They kept it quiet at first, then hinted at it before the announcement. When the bikes began to arrive, we finally dared to believe we had been given a 2nd chance with the hot girl! I sold my RD, saved my money and bought a new '85. Still own it. Great bike. Everything you said about the YPVS is true. In nearly 40 years, I have had so much fun riding and now restoring her with my son. Over that time, I have seen the image of the YPVS evolve: 80's were 😎 90's were passe 00's were really passe 10's were 😎 again, with a twist. Everyone wanted to buy your bike, cheap. 20's still 😎 but no cheap buyers. My son is waiting patiently to roll the YPVS into his garage.

One of my rivals, Randy Rhem, put together a team, and we finished 6th overall and 2nd in class (Middleweight Superbike). And the RZ350 is great, too. Nothing else feels the same, on song feels like flying. Allspeeds gets noisy after a few hours. I did commute with mine, need to thrash it regularly though to clear it's throat. Flexi forks and frame, brakes benefit from a caliper rebuild and braided hoses. Easy to work on and rebuild, cheap tyres, best bang for buck of any bike in my opinion. 30-45 odd mpg is shocking by today's standards and add oil cost, but when they are well set up, magic.

GSX8-R isn't much better when thrashed... mid-high 30s
@cedriclynch2 ай бұрын
@@HaggisPowerWhen the RD500LC first came out one of the motorcycle magazines raced one against a 1000cc four-stroke (I don't remember which make and model it was) around a race circuit. It equalled the speed of the 1000cc bike, and the fuel consumption was about 30mpg on the RD500LC and 20mpg on the 1000cc bike. Yamaha's Power Valve gives much better fuel economy than other high-performance 2-strokes because it works by lowering the tops of the exhaust ports at lower revs, catching and making use of fuel-air mixture that would otherwise escape and be wasted. It also gives a much wider power band than you usually get on a highly tuned 2-stroke.

@@ProjectMoto My shopping list had only 2 bikes on it:- the RD 350LC and the GPz550. I could only afford second hand, so I test rode a black 350LC followed by a white 350 YPVS . Then I found a GPz 550 (which was cheaper btw). The deciding factor for me was the 4 stroke powerband of the Kawasaki. It just took off in 3rd gear like a missile... To put things in perspective, the GPz 550 had a 6 speed gearbox at a time when most bikes had 5 and it was quite capable of showing a tailight to the majority of 4 stroke 750's of the day. I did also own an Aprilia RS 250 for a few years 2001-2004, I was hoping the get that RD 350LC experience , but although the Aprilia was a great track bike, the power delivery wasn't the same as the Yamaha. I'm a huge fan of the Kawasaki ZX-7. The best track bike or even twisty road bike. So stable at speed it makes me feel like I'm a better rider it's so good. And this is before all the electronic nannies were on sportbikes.

Had both in the same colours. The 350 had me laughing all the way to the courthouse and a+e on many an occasion. The 500 drew attention wherever i went on it. I paid £1295 for the 350 in 1985 and £3,000 for the 500 a few years later.

Just subscribed to your Chanel mainly for the 2stroke content as there's so little of 80 2stroke bikes being ridden on KZbin . I also watched you riding a RD350 and NSR250 and it's so good to see this as I also grew up with 2strokes and still love them. I've owned 7 TZR's(2 ×125 and 5×250s) and a few other 2strokes(I still own a TZR250 2ma)So I look forward to seeing more on 80s 2 strokes in the future. Btw I'm not sure if you mentioned it but did you own RGVs and KR1S's back in the day🤔

Back in the early 90,s my mate got his hands on an ex track bike of a YPVS for the road. I road it around in 3d gear and never dropped below 120mph, these bikes when set up correctly will out pace on country roads any modern bike. I owned a Stan Stevens tuned Gamma500 and stage 3 bored to 600cc, and still wish I had the YPVS instead. Dude, one day I will drop into the shop and put a down payment on a new Diavel v4 as an excuse to meet you. Also I want to ask can your team or recommend a place to race prep my 05- 999s with a used Termi or new Zard System and Race ECU, and fix that horrendous low RPM stalling issue some of these bikes are known for in the Race forums. Love the channel and plz ride safe as the Industry needs good role models, and your YT and Ducati should pay you double. Remember a wise Chines proverb says.. Man Go Bed Itch Bung, Wakey Wakey, Stink Phinker.
@ProjectMoto Жыл бұрын
Yeah when these are tuned and set up right they are awesome bikes, and like you say they are great down the lanes, mate the Diavel V4 is a cracking bike.. the new favourite to ride for a few in the shop , will ask around for the set up.. and thanks appreciate the comments .. I will watch how I go to bed 😂😂

Two of literally the most iconic bikes in history (even though I'm more of a fan of the air-cooled RD's).... die to own those two bikes, one day maybe 😅 Owned a 74 Kawasaki H2 triple way back in the early 00's while I was living in Florida, spotted it in a classified magazine and freaked, drove about 300 miles south towards the Everglades down towards Miami to buy it, trailered it home another 300, and then loved that beautiful thing for 2yrs and then my dumbass moved back to Jersey and didn't want to attach a hitch to my current 92 Mustang 5L LX to trailer it back so I F'ing sold it like a dumbass... 😢

@@ProjectMoto I definitely made stupid decisions in selling some of my bikes, one of the more painful ones was stupidly selling my mint, 96 built CBRXX (US based) after I dumped thousands into rare Japanese goodies for it and all that time setting it up (1200cc bore, JB/Keihin Flatsides, early hand bent Technical Sports Racing full titanium exhaust, TSR slave, TSR Brembos, TSR rearsets, and assorted Babyface, Moriwaki, AS Uotani, Magical Racing carbon and kevlar...too much 😖)

Ooh what a beauty 🥰. I actually prefer the sound of a Powervalve with standard pipes - don't look as cool though. My bro-in-law is rebuilding an '84 one of those - identical. I had an' 85 F1 back in the day - same but fully faired. Fun fact: top fairing and screen shared with the mighty 500LC. Loved that 350. Also, I wonder where Paul picked his Powervalve up? Pretty sure that's an old Dorset reg. Great vid, keep 'em coming 👏
