Discord's New Safety Tools are...

Weirdos on Discord aren't going to be happy when Discord releases their new safety features. But what about us normal, well behaved, Discord moderators.
Are Discord's new safety features going to be a blessing or a curse to the platform? Are we sacrificing our privacy on Discord for the sake of teens that have AFK parents? Will we just have another thing pop up whenever you try to do anything on Discord?

6:47 I tried to use Matrix and Signal before, but in the present times everyone I meet only has Discord, or maybe sometimes Messenger, and ABSOLUTELY NO ONE wants to switch to Matrix or Signal... It's the endless problem of "it's not popular enough, so I'm not gonna use it for just 1 person", so it just never becomes popular among the average user. I'd love it if AT LEAST one of the big, mainstream messaging plaforms used by lots of people was ACTUALLY privacy-respecting and fully end-to-end encrypted (metadata too!)

The Matrix clients I tried in the past didn't even have webhooks, so no youtube previews for example (not without a "plugin", which btw gave a thumbnail preview, not a video preview, it was stupid). Many other lacking features. There is a reason why Discord copied Gilded's form ans guild features, its because Gilded was a legitimate threat to Discord, because it matched its feature set but added better features on top of that. Open source clients are not targeting this, so they are not getting would-be discord users.

Yea, matrix isn’t on par with discord in terms of social features since it’s more about privacy, but you can use bridges to ‘bridge’ services like discord, messenger, etc so you or any number of your friends can use it while also still communicating on those platforms. I use it and they’re pretty good honestly

@Leeloo_the_fox yeah, I miss Classic Discord. The same thing also applied to Twitter, they were all fun and games until now. Discord's mobile app (even the last old UI versions) is barely usable at worst, as I have a hard time browsing through hundreds or thousands of new messages per text channel, unless I screenshot the last read new message or copied and pasted it onto a Notes app to put it on search as a "first new message shortcut" later on

The relax button should be that it sends you to a comfort server you select and disable that conversation for a selected time so it mite be able to talk to others that you know are better than that current conversation

Discord direct messages were never private and the company has stated in their terms for a long time that they use them. I'm not a fan of it, but crunching them with AI isn't a big leap. This is super common to see across all of the major social platforms.

Discord and server leadership can and do subjectively censor whatever is considered false, hateful, or harrassing per their terms and guidelines. These messages are being crunched by Google too. :D

If a company starts picking and choosing what's on its platform it can be considered an edititorial platform and cam no longer be protected from what is hosted. Truth be told though, there _should_ be an "don't show this again" type of checkbox you can tick before clicking "close" for future, with a way to reset your choice in Discord settings for the future, if you ever change your mind about it.

A friend can mention something in my DMs and all it takes is one refresh of my KZbin app for a video on it to be on my home page.
