Join us on an exhilarating trek through the stunning Alpi Apuane as we explore Campocatino and make our way to the Hermitage of San Viviano. Campocatino, a picturesque mountain locality nestled in the municipality of Vagli di Sotto, Lucca, sits at an altitude of about 1000 meters. This unique location, at the foot of the majestic Roccandagia rock face, features a vast glacial basin, offering a glimpse into the area's quaternary glaciation period.
Highlights of Campocatino
Oasis of Campocatino: Designated a "LIPU Nature Reserve" in 1991, this area boasts diverse ecosystems and habitats supporting a variety of bird species. From alpine choughs and wallcreepers on rocky cliffs to larks and wheatears in the meadows, and various birds in the surrounding woods, the biodiversity here is incredible.
Historical "Caselli": These traditional pastoral buildings have been preserved with their ancient construction techniques, adding a cultural layer to the natural beauty.

Trek to San Viviano's Hermitage
Embark on a 30-minute hike from Campocatino to the Hermitage of Beato Viviano, perched at about 1090 meters on the eastern slopes of Monte Roccandagia. This hermitage, carved into the rock, was home to the ascetic Viviano, who lived off the wild cabbages that miraculously grew on the barren rock walls. Today, the people of Vagli hold deep devotion to Beato Viviano, honoring him as the protector of both shepherds and quarry workers.
