If you are looking for a simple-to-tie but deadly Callibaetis nymph, try my Herl Diawl Bach or Herl Bach. This is fast becoming one of my favorite Callibaetis nymphs. It has proven itself across western North America whenever trout are feeding on Callibaetis nymphs.

Hi Phil I'm from Wales, home of the Diawl Bach ( translates as Little Devil ) and as a Welsh speaker think it's high time everyone pronounces it correctly. It's Di Owl (same as the bird ) Bach . more difficult but nearest I can think of for anyone who has never heard welsh language , like Bach the classical composer

Hi, The Diawl Bach is one of my go to stillwater patterns. I was aware of how to pronounce the flies name and thought I had done so. I will make sure in future videos I am true to the fly’s name. 👍 Cheers, Phil

I tied a batch and started running it with great results. I knew this would be a hit. I switched the ribbing to small French tinsel for weight and durability. It’s my lead fly choice on cloudy days !!!!

Would this work in a river as well as it would in a lake?

Hi Bill, There is no reason this wouldn’t work in moving water too. Cheers, Phil

@Philip Rowley hey Phil, I'm big fan of yours and love your content. Keep it up! On another note do you have a video on how you setup your chironomid rig or a leech/chironomid rig? Secondly when i was fishing lower K last weekend I saw an insane green chironomid hatch but I was in about 50 ft of water on my fishcat pontoon...how would you approach that scenario...in the really deep water(with floating line). Thanks again!

@@billkennedy8795 Hi Bill, great question. I will be putting some videos together along with a knot-tying and rigging course in the near future. For deep water emergences, like the one you experienced, I would carefully anchor above them. Once anchored, I would use set up a fast sinking, density-compensated type VI or VII full sinking line and fish vertically through the water from a foot off the bottom right up to the surface. My leader would be about five feet long, consisting of two sections, 3 feet of 1X or 2X fluro and 2 feet of 2X or 3X for my final tippet section. Be prepared for savage takes with this method. I would also keep in mind that just because the emergence is in 50 feet of water doesn't mean the fish are feeding just above the bottom. Often in deep water, trout will suspend and feed mid-depth as the ascending pupa wiggle by. In these instances, you can fish a floating line and indicator and explore anywhere between 12-15 down. Just make sure you are amongst the emerging chironomids. If you have one, a sounder is a big help in these instances. I hope this helps. Cheers, Phil

That’s certainly a great option. I like the flash when the natural nymphs are ascending to the surface to emerge. At this time the natural nymphs have a lot of shine due to the trapped gas beneath their exoskeleton they use to aid the emergence process. Cheers, Phil

No doubt it is similar, but a Chomper also has a shellback. Either way, they are great flies. Cheers, Phil
